Imphal, Jan 18: A brick field keeper was bludgeoned to death by masked men last night at Pheidinga near inter-village road in Loitang Khunou under Sekmai police station of Imphal West district, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Ayekpam Nabachandra, 55, s/o A.Iboton of Purul Likli Litanpokpi. The victim had been staying for a couple of years as a keeper at the brick field belonging to Elangbam Sunil, a resident of Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai of Imphal West.
Last night at about 9, some unidentified masked men barged into the house where Nabachandra was staying alone and he had a conversation with the assailants and then they started beating up Nabachandra with sticks, said Dhanmaya, a widow whose house located just next to Nabachandra’s.
The 47-year-old woman (Dhanmaya) who has been staying near the brick field with her three children told the media that the assailants asked Nabachandra for a dinner which he refused, telling them that the brick field owner was a new one and not the old one after which they started thrashing him. The assaulters left the spot in a car after the victim was left in a pool of blood, said Dhanmaya’s daughter Maya.
She tried to rush the victim to a hospital that night but to no avail, Dhanmaya regretted.
However, Nabachandra was rushed to the RIMS hospital at around 7 this morning, about 10 hours after the incident, with the help of one Mocha, another keeper of the brick field, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
A case has been registered at the Sekmai police station regarding the incident.
