Dhobi Ghat , a slum area with a majority of muslim population , is situated on the bank of river Yamuna, near Batla House, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi with around 150 families. These families are mostly deprived and poor, surviving with low literacy rate, malnutrition, hunger and lack of sanitation.

Khudai Khidmatgar had organized a youth camp under the guidance of social activist Faisal Khan, with its objective of ‘service of God’ on 26th feb 2012 for the families of dhobi ghat. There were 20 volunteers in this campaign. I was one of them to experience the ground conditions of this area.
One of the most shocking facts discovered was that no civil society group/ government officials had ever visited them, even though this area is in the capital city and is situated near Jamia Nagar. How is it possible that NGOs who get crores of rupees to work in slum , to eradicate poverty, to fight with malnutrition, to raise voices for rights, to campaign for education etc; have never visited this area, I wondered.
My report here is dedicated to those people, with the hope that their condition will become better gradually through joint efforts of the government, civil society and their own. In my first sight of this area, I saw children playing, not with modern era toys, but with plastic bags immersed in waste, garbage of river etc.

Coming to Manipur- FireHouse Rock to Rescue India Tour 2012
The Ultimate Rock and Roll Experience is headed straight to you!!! International Rock band FIREHOUSE is slated to perform live at Imphal on April 10, 2012. The band is slated to perform at Dimapur on April 7 at DDSC stadium, after which it will head straight to rock capital-Imphal. With the tour dates finally announced, fans can get ready to witness a slice of rock music history.
FireHouse has been rockin’ for over a decade. Their music has taken them all over the world and has produced Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum records in the United States and Countries abroad. In 1990, their first album, entitled ‘FireHouse’ was released. The bands first single, Shake and Tumble, had impressive radio success. The band then released Don’t Treat Me Bad, which became their first Top Ten hit. This was followed by Love of a Lifetime, which also entered the Top Ten reaching the #3 spot on the United State charts. The band’s second album, Hold Your Fire, was released in 1992. It produced the hits Reach for the Sky and Sleeping with You. Another Top Ten hit, When I Look into Your Eyes, peaked on the US charts at #5. This album earned the band two more gold albums and over 1 million sales worldwide. In 1995, FireHouse released their third album on Epic, simply titled 3.
Once again, FireHouse produced another Top Forty hit in the US with I Live My Life for You. It was with this album, FireHouse made their first trip to Southeast Asia for a promotional tour. Their fourth album, Good Acoustics, was released in 1996 ad quickly went Gold in Malaysia, Thailand, and Philippines. Good Acoustics contains unplugged versions of the group’s greatest hits, as well as four new songs. This album produced foreign hits such as In Your Perfect World, Love Don’t Care, and You Are My Religion. Category 5 was officially released in the United States in 1999. On April 22, 1999, the band recorded their live show in Osaka. The result – the first ever live album by FireHouse. Bring ‘em Out Live was released in Japan in December 1999 and in the United States on Spitfire Records in July 2000. The turn of the century brought the release their seventh album, titled 02. This album had notable success despite the changing style of popular rock music.
As music changes over time, Firehouse continues to evolve their musical style; yet, at the same time. Hang onto their hard rock roots. Released in October of 2003, album number 8 is no exception. You can expect to hear what Firehouse is famous for… soulful, melodic hard rock.

International Women’s Day Celebration
This International Women’s Day has once again reaffirmed the belief of the people of Manipur in the spirit that Manipuri women have shown in various fields. In a society where everything is rotting, the women of Manipur have everything to suffer and yet they have all throughout been in the front to fight the painful rotting. They have proved this when they play in the field, on the ring, in the jail, on the street. They have created a place of their own in proving this and we cannot miss to recognise it.
In connection to the occasion of International Women’s Day, Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD) had organised a meeting to celebrate the spirit and achievements of Manipuri women in their struggle for a peaceful home and society in Manipur. The meeting discussed the socio-political environment in Manipur in order to discern the intensities of the history of Manipuri women’s struggle. While the need to see the context of women’s political action in Manipur was the focus of the discussion, MSAD also addressed the need to seriously look into the crimes against women perpetrated by beastly security and police forces, and cruel husbands alike. MSAD in this regard holds that series of recent cases of rape, murder and torture of women have challenged the civil society in Manipur to offer a critical engagement with these brutal events so that women are safe. In the spirit of the International Women’s Day, MSAD once again appeals to all Manipuri women to fight such atrocities both in the domestic and public world.
Manipur Student Association Delhi (MSAD) organized a social gathering of the 101 year jubilee celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March 2012. It was conducted at Delhi University.

Kalakshetra Manipur is conducting its Masterclass Session 2012, an actors’ training workshop with young theatre scholars observing the process from March 1, 2012 to March 29, 2012. Experienced young actors from different parts of India and from France with young theatre scholars from School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi are interacting for a month.
In the midst of the workshop, an actor from France, Marie Gutierrez who has worked with Zygmot Molik (Laboratory Theatre Grotowski, Poland) will present an “Exposition on Grotowski” on March 13, 2012 (Tuesday) at 1:00 p.m.
Another actor Grégori BAQUET, who is also a psycho-therapist, specialized on body and mind therapy will give a talk on the same day.

Silence is what envelopes you as you enter Mannar, a small town in Kerala. But as you take a stroll in the comforting natural surroundings of this town, breaking through the many layers of silence, the sound of clinking of metals, welding and grinding machines reaches your ears probably piquing your interest. And as you move towards the source of the sound you will be stupefied by the gleam and sheen of bell metal products in the many alas or forges that have existed here for centuries.
Mannar, a gram panchayat in Alappuzha district has the unique distinction of harbouring and nurturing a tradition and a craft which dates back to several centuries. Nearly 300 families in this town have carried on the tradition of bell metal products making in their alas. Bell metal is a harmonious blend of tin and copper. Typified by its sonorous quality when struck, bell metal provides a fine medium for the craftsmen to cast both religious artifacts especially magnificent lamps in various shapes and sizes as well as domestic utensils. Mannar has an assortment of traditional alas or forges as well as semi-modern factories which have come up in recent years engaged in the craft of bell metal products. The artisans of these alas produce an array of glistening bell metal products. These elegant artifices over the years have crossed the Arabian Sea to spread the fame of this small town and to capture a range of markets in different parts of the world.
One of the main tourist attractions in Kochi is the World’s biggest Varpu (traditional vessel usually used for preparing payasam or kheer), placed in an antique shop in Jew Town. But few people know that it was manufactured in Mannar over a period of one year during which 100 labourers toiled to bring it to perfection.
The 3250 kg Varpu with a diameter of 12 ft and a capacity of 10000 liters was created by the house of Rajan Alackal. Shri Rajan’s family has been in the business of bell metal products for five generations. Working with a team of 17 employees now his forge has supplied traditional bell metal products that include household utensils like Uruli (a wide mouthed vessel), Nilavilakku (a wick lamp), Kindi (a spouted pitcher) and idols of Hindu Gods, idols of Pope, Narayana Guru to temples, churches, museums across the country. Indira Gandhi Museum in New Delhi has showcased Al Vilakku (1001 lamps) created in his workshop.
Over the years the artisans in this small town have not only embraced the new technology in the making of these traditional products but have also forayed in to newer territories like Shri Ananth Krishna Achary who in his ala has specialized in the making of iron boxes. With Government’s support the family tradition of making bell metal products has acquired the status of a cottage industry. The inimitable stature that Mannar has acquired over the years has been etched for permanence in some extraordinary artifices. They include the world’s biggest temple lamp at Chettikulangara Devi temple; the world’s biggest temple bell at Mohan Nagar temple in Shimla; the world’s biggest church bell at the Cathedral Church in New Delhi, and the replica of the famous Tree of Life and Knowledge, now kept in a museum in Chennai. Imphal, Mar 25: 27 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under HQ IGAR(S) organized a fifteen-day long tour comprising of 20 Students and five teachers from the remote areas of Thoubal District in Manipur to Delhi and Agra from 09 to 24 Mar. The children mostly in the age group between 13 to 16 years hail from remote far flung areas of Thoubal District, Manipur. The tour culminated with the “Flag In” Ceremony at Mantripukhri on 25 March. Maj Gen U K Gurung, YSM, IGAR (S) received the jubilant children and the accompanying teachers. A large number of Civil Dignitaries were also present during the ceremony. The IGAR (S) took a keen interest in sharing the stories of the tour with the students and more so regarding the ineffaceable moments and the interactive sessions they had in Delhi. The aim of the educational tour was to provide the much needed exposure to young children about varied developments that are taking place in the rest of the country and to introduce them to the cultures, people and landscapes which make up our great Nation. Delhi is the cultural, and political seat of the government of our country. During their visit to Delhi, the children interacted with many distinguished personalities including the Defence Minister, Mr A K Antony.

Imphal, Mar 25: A Tripartite Agreement for Suspension of Operations with United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA) and Pakan Re-unification Army (PRA) under the umbrella group Kuki’National Organization (KNQ) was signed yesterday at Imphal. A total of 95 UTLA cadres with 55 weapons and 22 PRA cadres with 17 weapons have come over board by abjuring path of violence and deciding to join the mainstream.
2. The Tripartite Agreement was ;signed by Principal Secretary (Home), Govt. of Manipur, Joint Secretary (NE), MHA, Govt. of India and the Group Representatives including Dr. Seilan Haokip (Spokesperson KNO), Seipu @ Ishael (President UTLA), Siehzahau T Singsit (General Secretary UTLA), K. Robert Singson (Army Chief UTLA), Thensei Singsit (Home Secretary UTLA), Boboi Singson (Defence Secretary UTLA), W. Jecky Anal (Commander PRA) and Teisong Haokip (Defence Secretary PRA).
3. UTLA and PRA, as constituents of KNO, have joined the SoO Agreement,which is in existence since 22-08-2008. They have agreed to abide by the Ground Rules in consonance with the existing one. Their cadres will be accommodated in the existing designated camps of KNO. They will be entitled to monthly stipend based on attendance in the camps.
4. The decision to bring UTLA and PRA in the SoO fold has been taken in the larger interest of bringing further peace in the hill districts of Manipur and as an incentive for other militant groups to abjure violence and join mainstream. The operational area of UTLA is areas adjoining Tamenglong and Churachandpur inter-district boundary and Jiribam sub-division. This will give a fillip to the Railway line construction works. PRA is operational in Chandel district.
5. The SoO Agreement with KNO and UPF was last extended in a Tripartite meeting at New Delhi for a period of one year i.e. upto 22-08-2012. The existing constituents of KNO Group are :
i. Kuki National Front (Military Council) (KNF(MC))
ii. Kuki National Front (Zogam)- (KNF(Z))
iii. United Socialist Revolutionary Army (USRA)
iv. United Minority Liberation Army (Old Kuki)
v. United komren Revolutionary Army
vi. Zomi Reunification Front
vii. Zou Defence Volunteer (KNO)
viii. Hmar National Army
ix. Kuki Revolutionary Army (Unification)
x. Kuki Liberation Army (KNO)
xi. Kuki National Army

The sixth mega marathon jointly organized by UPF and Athletic Assn. of Manipur on the theme ‘run for your nation’ was held today.
Altogether 2,000 athletes took part in the mega marathon.
Thounaojam Sanjit Luwang, Yairipok Bishnunaha, Sagolsem Premila of SAIRC stood first positions for men and women category.
The director of YAS, S. Dilip flagged off the athletes from Khuman Lampak Main Stadium and ran at least 22 Km in Imphal. In men’s categoriy. Th. Sanjit Luwang of Army sports Institute, Paona, Bipul Shahria, Assam and M. Samananda, Haoreibi Makha Leikai stood first, second and third position respectively. In women category S. Premila, Ch. Sonia SAIRC and L. Bisheswari of chajing Karam were position holder.
Rs. 30 thousands, 20 thousands and 15 thousands were distributed to these who stood first, second and third positions. Those who are from fourth to 10 positions also got Rs. 2000 each as consolation prizes.

Imphal, March 25 NNN: One salesman was rescued by the security force personnel in the late afternoon of Sunday from Manipur’s south district Churachandpur from the armed men.
According to the police, one Kh. Ibungojaoba (41) was abducted by three gunmen from Churachandpur market at about 7:30 pm on Saturday. The kidnappers then demanded Rs 1 lakh for the release of Ibungojaoba from his employer. Ibungojaoba who hails from Khumakjam Leikai of Churachandpur works as a salesman in a butcher shop which mostly deals chicken in Churachandpur market.
At around 5:30 pm today, following a tip-off from certain quarters, a combined team of Churachandpur police and Assam Rifles personnel rushed to Bollen village, some 6 km from Churachandpur police station and rescued the man. The security personnel also arrested two of the three abductors. Though it is yet to confirm but the police suspect that the abductors are cadres of the Kuki National Front, KNF (S) which is a party to the Suspension of Operation (SoO).

Imphal, Mar 25: A book entitled state, society and governance compiled by Seram Niken was released today at Manipur Press Club. Prof. N. Khogendra, Bhudhachadnra Sanasam, Dr. Dhanabir Laishram M.U. Dr. M. Chinglen M.U, N. Ibungochoubi executive editor Manipur Mail were on the dais.
The book contains 50 articles and costs Rs. 250. The Ashangba communication is the publisher of the book. N Ibungochoubi said, “Having scanned through all the articles written by Seram Neken and thereafter intensively reading some with keen interest, I am a better and an enlightened reader. The subjects and issues he has taken up undoubtedly invite a serious rethinking from all as they profoundly reflect the socio-political and contemporary challenges facing us. Every article ought to be critically examined, the outcomes discussed and policies suggested. I would be grossly committing an impropriety by summing the contents and the values of the articles he has written in a single session. Some of the articles will continue to be a constant reminder to us to reconsider our inactive faculties to be more attentive and understand the nature of urgency, the grave and imminent future that awaits us, if not attended to with a concern. This aspect reinforces the reasons why we need to accommodate a greater space for people who write and speak on issues of concern, especially when our own state is confronted with the most abnormal and unheard of events. On the other hand, I am reminded of the cliché, ‘Reporters’ Paradise’, a title unceremoniously crowned, while referring to Manipur, all the reasons and happenings we live with.
Although a reader will experience and feel the trends we are adapting to with a complete lack of interest or helplessness, the impression I get, which is purely personal, leads to an inconclusive thought with a question: Have we resigned? The involvement and the expertise of a great civilization supported by people of strong characters and strength have been questioned by the articles.
Neken has successfully made an attempt to reach out to the readers and offer a common platform, first writing at regular intervals and ultimately compiling it in the form of a book. I would like to recognize two significant values of this book. First, he has candidly portrayed the symptoms of known and unknown chronic ailments that have found fertile soil within our own social fabric, which we consciously or unwittingly live with. Let me take the example of the “Home To The Thousand Garbage”. The psyche of the people of Manipur is reflected as we throw our wastes anywhere and everywhere. Heaps of garbage in the middle of the road and every corner in our localities represent what we are supposed to perceive as Governance. The second is the subsequent and compounding catalogue of explanations in response to the first and the example. I honestly feel that the dialogues on every piece that he has written can be a topic for our focussed group discussions after the formal launch or release of this book.
The book ‘State, Society and Governance’, a reproduction of fifty articles written published by I am sure and all will agree, has served the basic and fundamental purpose of expressing one’s thought premised on knowledge and most importantly conviction. We have two eminent scholars who have been witnessing and commenting on the affairs of our day-to-day lives with a vision today on the occasion of releasing of the book. I look forward to the subjective and objective perspectives from Dr. Dhanabir Laishram and Dr. Chinglen Maisnam, who are also prolific writers. As a reader, my observations are impulsive reactions.
The central point I wish to bring forth today is that Neken’s articles have generated a thought process.
The book also offers, among others, a moment for pleasure while reading: the book adds a fervor that enlivens our level of thinking. While congratulating Neken for his efforts to write on a wide range of subjects, we all should encourage more writers like Neken to inform and inspire us.

New Delhi , Mar 25 (ANI): When the alleged coal scandal rocked the nation a couple of days ago, forcing the Congress-led UPA Government to go on the defensive and give a clarification, a similar scam appears to have taken root in Congress-ruled Arunachal Pradesh.
The CAG report titled ‘Performance Audit of Coal Block Allocations’ has reportedly charged the Central Government with extending “undue benefits” of nearly Rs.10.67 lakh crore to commercial entities while allotting 155 coal acreages without auction during the period of 2004-09.
While Arunachal cannot match the national coal scam figures, but reports have emerged of illegal coal mining taking place in the state’s Namchik Open cast coal mine at Kharsang in Changlang district regularly.
Recently, the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad (ABAVP) had alleged that both the Arunachal Pradesh Mineral Development and Trading Corporation (APMDTC) and the Tinsukia-based National Mining Company Private Limited (NMCL) were guilty of malpractices and manipulation.
In a press release, ABAVP joint secretary Talo Mugli has sought the intervention of the Arunachal Pradesh Government in following a proper tendering process before awarding mining contracts and signing marketing deeds, as published in local dailies.
The APMDTC authorities had awarded the contract by manipulation with the connivance of the then ministry and officials, Mugli claimed, and further accused the corporation of manipulating the expiry date of the contract on 4th April 2006 after the expiry of a five year term to extend it further.
Mugli, who claims to have documents to support his charge, alleged: “There has been maneuvering with the coal prices of different grades.
The grade of coal and rates for sale of coal as per the specific grade is fixed by the APM DTC which are: Grade A-@Rs.1470, Grade B @Rs.1200 & Grade C @Rs.1100 and this includes the extraction charges as well as commission is @Rs.150/tonne.”
“However, the NMCL is marketing and selling coal through the railway and road transport network at a rate of about Rs.4000 to Rs.8000 per tonne for different grades of coal. The NMCL has been showing the different grades of coal with the connivance of the APMDTC and as such there is manipulation with the grading of coal, with the sole purpose of making higher profits,” he adds.
If ‘Coal deal scandals robs India of billions’, will it rob Arunachal off in millions – is a million dollar question, who will reply?
In addition, who would provide answers to how many metric tonnes of black diamond have been extracted so far from the Namchik coalfield in Changlang?
And the royalty/revenue it generated for the state exchequer? Some questions that remain unanswered require answers in the larger public interest
