Guwahati, June 15 NNN: In a tragic incident a boat carrying dozens of people capsized in Bongaigaon district of western Assam this evening.
Reports said around 20 people are still missing while around 15 of them have been rescued by the local people.
Though the police said around 25 people were on board in the boat but locals said there were around 40 occupants in the boat.
Reports further said that majority of the occupants of the ill fated boat were small time business people who were traveling upstream of river Brahmaputra from Chapar in Dhubri district. The accident happened soon after the boat sailed into Champa, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, a little before 6 pm.
Nitul Gogoi who is the superintendent of police of Bongaigaon district said the cause of the incident is still unclear.
This is the second boat mishap in a little over a month in western Assam. Last month, 45 people died when a ferry capsized near Medartari in Dhubri district. The ferry had caught a storm and overturned with more than 200 people on board.
