Imphal, August 27 NNN: Manipur State Council, CPI secretary Dr M Nara Monday alleged that the explosive situation in the state of Assam and consequent exodus of Northeast students and professionals from Southen cities has arisen out of the “non-serious attitude” of both the Central Government and state Government of Assam.
The fallout of the Kokrajhar event of Assam has created a panic situation throughout the country and not only in the Northeastern states of India, Dr M Nara, secretary, Manipur State Council, CPI told a press conference at the party’s office.
Nara addressed the press conference to express the party’s deep concern over the Assam situation. He said there can be more serious crisis of this nature and complecations are bound to appear extending the same fate to Manipur and other parts of the Northeast.
The Central should have a clear national policy on the migrants. Now, the need of the hour is that the Central Government should call an all party meeting at the Centre to chalk out a policy on this issue at the earliest without fail, Nara suggested.
The CPI will seriously discuss this matter in its National Council meeting being held on September 5-7 next month in New Delhi to bring out an appropriate policy, Nara informed.
Referring to the ongoing Panchayat elections campaign in the state, the state CPI secretary said the campaign is “awfully bad” and is felt that it is the most expensive and the worst kind of Panchayat elections ever held in the state of Manipur since the independence of India.
He said the CPI, Manipur state is very much worried about the future of the state with the present electoral system in the Panchayat Raj institutions.
It is not a genuine democratic grass root election, he accused and said it has turned into an “open voter auction mela.”
He added that the basic political philosophy of society building is getting lost and the present system has paved the way for more corruption, cheating and looting of public money, alleged Dr Nara.
He said, “We appeal to the people not to be taken away by such kind of malpractices and purchased the rights of our citizens by money. Let us try to prevent the present menace and realise the value of real democracy in the true sense.
Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam on Monday once again made appeal to the fleeing students and professionals from the Southern cities to go back to their respective places and resume their normal activities.
The state Home Minister made this appeal a day after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister R Ashoka accompanied by the state DGP and other officials visited Manipur on a confidence building move in connection with the flight of Northeast people from Bangalore and other parts of Karnataka.
Addressing a press conference at his official residence, Gaikhangam said further panic is not necessary to return to the cities like Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad as Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister R Ashoka has made a confidence by visiting the state by himself yesterday.
Gaikgangam said he on behalf of the people of Manipur thanks the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister for his confidence building visit to the state.
He also said now it has been clear that everything was a rumour and the people have also confirmed it. Moreover, the Karnataka Government has also arrested those involved in rumour mongering and at the same time steps are being taken by it to face such threat, he added.
Asked about the present steps taken up by Manipur police officers who are now in deputation in the Southern cities following the threat against Northeast people, Gaikhangam said he has been informed that things are very different between here in Manipur and there.
He made it clear that nothing is there in ground reality as rumoured though there are certain verbal threatenings saying such things are often happened in New Delhi, too.
Asked about the illegal migrants residing in Manipur, the Home Minister said it would not be proper for him to comment in this regard and noted that passport is required for such migrants because there is a national law policy of the country.
Necessary steps are being taken up by the state Government to deal with such issue, he informed and said he does not want to politicise on the matter.
