Imphal, Sept 14 MNS/NNN: Tension ran high at Leishangthem and Keibung areas in Thoubal district today following a mob fury over the September 9 alleged suicide case.
Police have to use tear gas to quell the mob who confronted the security forces.
Tyres were burnt along the road by the protestors.
Six persons including a jawan of 4th IRB were injured in the confrontation.
The corpse of Maibam Milan, who was found hanging on September 9 is still at the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal.
It all began late morning of today with the locals started blocking road from Leishangthem to Keibung in protest against government decision to dispose off on Saturday the corpse of Maibam Milan if the family members do not claim it by Friday.
While blocking the road by the locals, a police sub-inspector (SI) while trying to deal with the protestors had reportedly used some “communal language” against the protestors. Hurt by the police sub-inspector’s attitude, the protestors confronted the police head-on. More forces rushed in to quell the growing number of protestors. Tear gas shells were used and in the process six persons including a security personnel were injured.
Minutes later, the superintendent of police and the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) rushed to the spot and assured the angry locals that action would be initiated against the sub-inspector. Following the assurance, the mob fury cooled down.
It can be noted here that on September 9, an alleged suicide committed by a boy over a love affair with a girl had caused a mob fury in a locality in Manipur’s Thoubal district the following day.
Maibam Milan, a 15-year-old boy had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the middle of the night yesterday at Keibung Primary School under Thoubal district Police Station, Thoubal district of Manipur.
Maibam Milan, son of M Shyam of Leishangthem Keli Makhong, Thoubal district took the extreme step after family members along with some neighbours of his girlfriend named as Anna reportedly gave him advice not to engross in love affairs as they were very young.
The family of Milan along with hundreds of local residents of Leishangthem Keli Makhong had stormed the house of Anna showing anger and shock over the death. However, police arrived at the scene and managed to control the angry crowd.
A case was registered with the Thoubal Police Station regarding the incident.
The body is still lying at JNIMS mortuary.
