AIZAWL, Oct 12: Four persons were killed in various places in Mizoram in the last 24 hours due to landslides.

Heavy down pouring since the last two days have been the cause for several landslides blocking several important roads Mizoram.

Accotrding to a delayed report received this afternoon, a JCB operator identified as one Muzir Uddin, his helper Nasim Uddin (18)Lalnunsiama (28) and a Sumo driver identified as one Lalnunsiama (28) were swept away by a massive landslide at a place called Dapchhuah village of Mamit district in the Mizoram-Tripura border yesterday. The dead body of Nasim Uddin has been recovered today but the bodies of the other two are yet to be traced.

Reports said Muzir and Nasim were clearing the road by using a JCB while Sumo driver Lalnusiama who was reportedly heading for Aizawl was waiting at the spot for the clearance of the road. Suddenly a massive landslide occurred sweeping three of them away. The JCP and the Sumo jeep were reportedly found some hundred feet below the road.

In a separate incident, another JCB driver identified as one Ramdinthara (24) was killed by the slide at a place called Kawnpui, which is 30 km from Aizawl yesterday. His dead was recovered today.

Meanwhile, important roads like Aizawl to Lengpui Airport, the approach road between Vaivakawn to Zotlang, Chanmari and Chaltlang are being blocked since yesterday due to the landslides. Power supply and telecommunication have also been disrupted due to the calamity since Thursday. The authorities have been asking those residents residing in the landslides prone areas to vacate their places for time being. Most of the dwelling places along the National Highways are not safe during any time of incessant dow pour.

It can be noted here that Mizoram has been experiencing hardship during this time of the year for a very several years. There were times when houses were damaged and human and animal casualties often occurred. This calamity of landslide has been a headache for the successive state governments in Mizoram. Though the authorities are trying their best to address the problem but to no avail.

BJP women front protest price hike

IMPHAL, Oct 12: Large number of BJP Mahila Morcha, Manipur Pradesh members sat a protest dharna behind the banner ‘Against LPG Price Hike and Cut in LPG Cylinder Quota by the UPA Government’ at Keisham Leikai Lairembi Mamang Leikai Community Hall, Keishampat here and then submitted a memorandum to the state Governor on Friday pressing […]

IMPHAL, Oct 12: Large number of BJP Mahila Morcha, Manipur Pradesh members sat a protest dharna behind the banner ‘Against LPG Price Hike and Cut in LPG Cylinder Quota by the UPA Government’ at Keisham Leikai Lairembi Mamang Leikai Community Hall, Keishampat here and then submitted a memorandum to the state Governor on Friday pressing him to control frequent price rise in term of cooking gas and to increase the quota of LPG cylinder to 12 per year.

The memorandum accused the UPA Government at the Centre of betraying the common man by increasing the price of LPG after putting a cap on the number of cylinders on all the people across the board, particularly the poor, middle class and lower income groups including farmers.

In the recently concluded BJP National Council meeting held at Haryana, the party has stated that the Congress led UPA Government has adopted an anti-people policy under which LPG cylinder quota has been cut and limited to 6 cylinders per year which has led to unbearable misery to the people of the country and also has caused great concerned to the womenfolk who are taking responsibility for domestic affairs, the memorandum mentioned.

The Congress party-led UPA Government, by taking anti-people and anti-poor decision with regard to LPG cylinder supply, has unleashed a false campaign saying that this was recommended by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas in which members from all political parties are represented, added the memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat.

Condemning the UPA Government for the LPG price hike and cut in gas cylinder quota, A Sharda, vice president of BJP Mahila Morcha, Manipur Pradesh on the sidelines of the protest told newspersons that the party’s women wing will continue agitation against the Government policy unless the demands are met almost immediately.

Women’s league demand protection of human rights

IMPHAL, Oct 12: The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom has accused the Government of India that the latter had failed to advance human rights and justice when it did not accept the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council to repeal the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) still in force today in […]

IMPHAL, Oct 12: The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom has accused the Government of
India that the latter had failed to advance human rights and justice when it did not accept the recommendations of the
UN Human Rights Council to repeal the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) still in force today in the North
East of India.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) expresses its grave concerns about the
non-acceptance by India of “this critical” demand during the Universal Periodic Review Report of India on September
20 2012.

It then stated that in solidarity with all those affected by the AFSPA, the League calls on the government of India to
repeal the AFSPA immediately. Such action would contribute to ending impunity and reduce oppression and
violence in the region, it added.

The Armed Forces Special Act continues to increase militarisation in the North East, augment impunity and facilitate
human rights abuse including rape and other forms of torture, forced disappearances, and killing of civilians. The
provision of the AFSPA, which enable arrests without warrants, and firing upon civilians to kill, violate international
law and human rights. Furthermore, the AFSPA provision providing legal immunity for all actions of Indian army
officers create a culture of injustice and impunity. Lack of accountability for crimes fails victims and leaves
individuals and families without any form of redress, it rues.

“Our WILPF Section of India supports the efforts of peace groups in the North East and particularly Ms Irom
Sharmila in combating this military regime. Ms (Irom) Sharmila started her hunger strike in 2000 in protest of the
AFSPA and each year is taken into custody and force-fed but her message remains clear that the effects and impacts
of the illegal AFSPA must not be silenced,” the women’s league expressed.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, said during his visit to India in March
2012, the AFSPA is a ‘ hated ‘ and ‘Draconian’ law, which has become ‘a symbol of excessive State power’ and it ‘has
no role to play in a democracy’ and ‘clearly violates International Law’. Given this remarks, WILPF calls on all actors in
the international community to support the calls to repeal the AFSPA as a matter of urgency, the League appeals.

“Finally, we send our messages of solidarity to all affected by the AFSPA as they continue to struggle for justice,
equality and peace. The Government of India must respond to the demands to repeal the AFSPA,” the Women’s
International League for Peace and Freedom urged.

The capital of the country has ceased to be the land for lower middle class people. Land is costly, power tariff is very high and to cap all at least 10 children are kidnapped every day. The newspapers published in Delhi carries child missing or of being kidnapped advertisements daily. The kids kidnapped are either dumped as labour or forced to beg on the street. Who are these people that they have no love and respect for each other? Too many publicity crazy men are out to grab media attention fighting for one cause or the other. Close on the heel of Anna phase one man called Kejriwal a media crazy man is out. One day he fights against enhanced power tariff next day he drags the highest political family in the country to land grabbing. His fight against Vadra involving him in controversial land deal is aimed at Gandhi family. Consequently 24 hours news channel looking for a man to take on big political family focussed on him. This question will remain why did not he fight against the criminals, who were resorting to kidnapping of children. A father would complain of his child, who was sleeping with him, missing from the cot to find later from a dried up well. Then there is the report of brother killing younger sister for meeting with her boyfriend. Such news is really disturbing. If it happens in Manipur the perpetrators of the crime would have either gone with the victim or vanished from his own land. Though the roads are muddy power supply irregular, only six hours in 24 hours and imminent threat of employees pay being held up for shortage of fund yet life here is little bit normal. Disturbing news of child missing or brother killing sister is not heard. Moreover vegetable items are very cheap in Manipur. There in Delhi ginger is sold for 80 rupees per kg and here in Imphal the price of ginger per kg is Rs 12 only. Power is regular in Delhi but the tariff is mindboggling. Rs 8000 for a small family using one air conditioner, four fans and a refrigerator. Too many families had their power lines snapped unable to clear the bill. Kejriwal could become a local hero for reconnecting the snapped power lines. He even asked the consumers not to clear the bill. There will be none who will be able to pay such enhanced power tariff when such bills are supplied to consumers in Manipur. Does it have anything to do with the entry of private partners in power sector? If that is so Manipur should resist entry of private companies in power sector. The poor people, who cannot clear even Rs 400 power bill per month will find uphill task to clear such huge bill. Such bills are for the dwellers in capital, which has become a land for the rich and famous people. A land at Chanakyapuri in the capital having around 1200 square yards was sold for 111 crores which work out to around Rs 10 per square yard. Naturally question arises which is the sweetest place on the earth. The answer is your home.
