GUWAHATI, Nov 8 NNN: Anti-graft activist and Gandhian Anna Hazare on Thursday blamed the Manmohan Singh government’s pro-corporate economic policy for the misery of farmers and a majority of rural masses.
“This is not a government of the people. People elect the ministers and other representatives but after assuming power they tilt toward corporate houses and hardly bother about poor people,” he said while addressing a massive rally in Guwahati on Thursday.
Hazare found it difficult to accept UPA-2 government’s logic that foreign Multi National Corporations (MNCs) need to be brought in to develop the country’s economy. This, he added, was against Gandhian theory of swaraj or self-rule.
“From 26 January 1950, people are owners of the country’s water, land, minerals and other natural resources. But they are losing their right due to the government’s favouritism toward corporate houses,” the anti-graft activist said.
Hazare alleged that poor farmers and tribals were being displaced from their lands because the government desperately trying to multiply profits for the corporate houses. “The government has to bring in new law to give more power to Gram Sabhas, placing them above Lok Sabha and Bidhan Sabha. Make laws so that to buy farmers’ lands permission from Garm Sabha must have to be taken,” he said, adding the UPA-2 government betrayed him on Jan Lokpal Bill.
Hazare also announced a new cross-country tour from January 30 to garner support for his crusade against corruption.
