Media house, scribe attacked at Arunachal

Itanagar, Nov 10 (ANI): Taking strong exception to the unabated shameful attacks on media houses and media persons despite deployment of police personnel, members of Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalist and Arunachal Press Club in a meeting here today unanimously decided to indefinitely ban carrying news and advertisement of All Arunachal Pradesh Public Transport […]

Itanagar, Nov 10 (ANI): Taking strong exception to the unabated shameful attacks on media houses and media persons despite deployment of police personnel, members of Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalist and Arunachal Press Club in a meeting here today unanimously decided to indefinitely ban carrying news and advertisement of All Arunachal Pradesh Public Transport Federation (AAPPTF).
The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalist and Arunachal Press Club expressing their strong resentment against the attack on Echo of Arunachal and its Associate Editor Tapan Kumar Das.
As a token of protest, both the organisations decided that all media houses, print and electronic, functioning from the Capital Complex would shut down on Monday and Tuesday.
A memorandum would be sent to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari to draw their attention towards the atrocities repeatedly committed on the media persons of the state.
The same yardstick will apply for any organisations, associations, unions or political parties, if they try to intimidate or attack media house or journalist in the near future. Also, the meeting with editor or journalist in connection with submission of a press release is henceforth strictly prohibited and the press releases should be dropped in the press release box. The police personnel on duty will enforce that no one dare enter the news desk to create disturbance. If it happens, the cops on duty must be held responsible.
Later in evening, IGP Sanjay Baniwal and Superintendent of Police (SP) Surender Kumar invited media persons at latter’s office and assured early arrest of the culprits involved in the Echo of Arunachal attack case and deployment of armed police personnel at media houses.
Baniwal also assured to issue status report of Arunachal Times’ Associate Editor Tongam Rina attack case by Monday, and added that the case will be taken by over by CBI as soon all formalities are completed. He informed that such formalities take some time and therefore there has been some delay.
Arunachal Times’ office was vandalized on April 15 last, its Associate Editor Tongam Rina shot at in front of the office on July 15 last and other two staffs were attacked on September 11 night last.
The GoAP, particularly the police department, have given only ‘lip service’ without any result whatsoever to grant justice to the press fraternity of the state.
Against all odds, the press persons with meager salary continued to serve the society but regrettably they are rewarded with attacks and assaults that demoralize them in continuing in this profession. Enough is enough. It is high time the GoAP and the civil society should rise to the occasion and give freedom to the press for independent functioning.
Meanwhile, terming the attack on EoA office and its associate editor Das cowardice reflecting non-accommodative and undemocratic spirit, Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) today called for as level playing field for the media to function independently.
The repeated attacks and intimidation of the media establishments and persons deserve condemnation from all quarters and the GoAP should take stringent action to bring an end to disturbance in public order.
“If this tribal society desires to prosper and grow, it has to respect the media and facilitate its unbiased functioning without any coercion for it to keep a tab on the three pillars of democracy – the executive, legislature and judiciary,” the ACCI said .

KOHIMA, Nov 10 (NEPS): Congress functionary from Phek district rued on the unprecedented rise of corruption in the district particularly in the road sectors. One of the multi-crore road scams was the construction of 44.36 km-long Phek-Chozuba road in the Phek district but the saddest part was the amount was released without completing the construction works, said Dr K Hoshi, Chairman of the NPCC Media Cell. “The most interesting part of the whole episode is the amount released was deposited into an individual’s account not claiming to be the contractor of the construction work,” he stated.

Talking to media persons here at Congress Bhavan on Saturday, the former Congress Candidate of the 19th Phek Assembly Constituency said the NPCC had already lodged complaint with State Vigilance Commission to probe into the multi-crore road construction scams in the district. “It is a matter of time that everything will roll out from the skeleton’s cupboard,” he pointed out.

Although they believed that State Vigilance Commission would do the job and yet if things weren’t forthcoming as expected, they would even try to seek the services of the country’s premier investigating agency, CBI, to investigate into the scams. “We assure you that as and when the Congress comes to power in the State, the case will be opened for investigation and bring to justice,” Dr Hoshi revealed.
Informing that the particular Phek-Chozuba road which was estimated at Rs 1794.07 lakh was the dream project of late Vamuzo, former Chief Minister of the State, the NPCC leader said that such a novel and ambitious project was “shattered by none other than his own party men in the present NPF-led DAN Ministry in the State.”

Dr Hoshi said the road construction was fundamentally the first and foremost step to all the developmental activities. “Surface transport is the only means of transportation in this part of the State,” he explained recalling their people’s sufferings over the decades due to the lack of road connectivity in the district. “In 50 years of Statehood, the Phek district headquarters is still not connected with all the weathered roads,” he revealed.

Questioning the action of EE, Phek Division for writing to the Ministry of DONeR citing reasons for the non-completion of road construction works due to the faulty DPR, the NPCC leader argued that such a step did not arise at all as the DPR was thoroughly scrutinized by an expert Dr PR Koud, Coordinator STA Jorhat Engineering College. “And since the work was left incomplete even after the time frame was set for completion, the contractors are answerable to the public. If they fail to answer, their firm should be blacklisted by the State Government,” the NPCC leader strongly demanded.

Stating the manner in which the EE, Phek Division blaming of the non-completion of the Phek-Chozuba road construction to the “faulty DPR,” the NPCC leader questioned whether the act either meant their engineers were incompetent in preparing DPRs or they were a party to the “benefit of doubts.”

As a part of the campaign National Day of Action on Coal to voice against use of coal as major of energy, a campaign entitled “Say No to Coal in Manipur” was organized at Imphal, the capital city of Manipur state on 10th November 2012. A drawing competition on the theme “Climate Change in Manipur” was organized for the students staying at Destitute Children Home, Dewlahland in Imphal West District.

A street awareness campaign was organized at Bir Tikendrajit Road in Imphal West District where pamphlets were distributed and petition was signed by public to prefer renewable energy than coal which pollute environment. The public were made aware of the environmental pollution and other climatic disasters that coal can create. There is report that state government of Manipur is planning to undertake mining of coal that will feed a coal power plant of at least 500 MW. If the project is taken up, it will pollute the air, water and soil which will affect the climate, productivity of crops and other environmental as well as health related problems.
