IMPHAL, Nov 12 MNS NNN : A powerful time bomb explosion on Monday killed one person and injured another that occurred at a trash site near Imphal College along the Tiddim road (Imphal Airport Road) in Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai under Singjamei Police Station, Imphal West.
The blast happened around 5:30 pm when the time bomb believed to have been planted by militants set off, killing a labourer and wounding another labourer who were pedestrians, police sources said.
The labourer killed in the explosion has been identified as one M Munneilin, also known as Alin Kom aged 37, son of Seipu Kom, a resident of Khonomphai village of Churachandpur district and the injured as Achungpa Kom aged 45, son of ST Atethang Kom of Sagang bazaar in the district. He is now undergoing treatment at Shija hospital, Langol here. The condition of Achungpa is stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
Munneilin and Achungpa, presently staying together at Jim Blesssing Home, Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai, were returning home from Paite Veng where they had been engaged in a building construction work when the bomb hit them on their way. The duo had been staying at the rented home along with their families for the last three years.
A case has been filed with the Singjamei Police Station in connection with the incident and they have begun investigation into it.
Troops of 28 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under HQ IGAR(South) recovered an IED from Lilong Maringkhul at about 08:30 AM on 12 Nov 12. The foot patrol of the Unit, while carrying out search of the area found a suspected IED placed on the road side under a pole covered by a card board box. The area was cordoned off by the troops and Metal detector team and ED dog of the Unit confirmed the same. Subsequently Bomb disposal team of Manipur Police and reached the location and the IED was diffused. The IED was consisted of one RCIED, two kgs of RDX with 1/2 kg ball bearings, one 9 volt battery and RCIED circuit with antenna. The IED was capable of carrying out of major damage to vehicles plying on the road, civilians and SF in the area. The extra alertness and vigilance exercised by the troops avoided an incident which would have caused immense damage to civilians.
