Haveri (Karnataka), Dec.9 (ANI): The BJP Government in Karnataka on Sunday faced the threat of instability after 13 state lawmakers defied the party’s whip to extend support to former state chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and his newly formed Karnataka Janata Party (KJP).
The 13 MLAs shared the dais with Yeddyurappa, placing the BJP in a quandary.
Seeing the backing, a combative Yeddyurappa asked Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to seek a fresh mandate from the people.
He said: “Shettar said action will be taken against legislators if they participated in today’s rally. The government has no majority now. You are in Chief Minister’s chair because of the support of Yeddyurappa. If you have the guts, dissolve the Assembly and seek fresh mandate”.
Among thos present at the rally were H. Halappa, Nehru Olekar, BP Harish, C C Patil and Sunil Valyapure, who tendered his resigation yesterday as Infrastructure Development Minister.
Shettar, however, asserted that he still commanded a majority in the state assembly.
In another sign of potential trouble for the five-month-old Shettar government, at a breakfast hosted by MLC Shivaraj Sajjan here, at least 21 MLAs, seven MLCs and four Lok Sabha members met Yeddyurappa.

IMPHAL, Dec 9 NNN: The Chadong villagers who have been affected by the Mapithel dam construction have pledged to put all out effort to stop the ongoing work of the multi-purpose project if the government fails to release the compensation amount by December 20.

IMPHAL, Dec 9 NNN: The United Naga Council (UNC)’s awareness campaign on Naga issue continues in full swing which kick-started since November 30.
The UNC leaders along with the village heads and church leaders carried out its campaign at Machi in Chandel district and Haochong in Tamenglong district on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
At Machi and Haochong UNC president L Adani informed the public about the status of the last (fourth) ‘tripartite talk’ held on August 31. He also told the gatherings that the next (fifth) round will take place anytime from now in one of the hill districts.
The UNC leader then informed the Naga public in both the meetings that the Naga solution would be based on the ‘uniqueness of the Naga history and situation’ and at the same time it would be ‘out of the box’.
“The Prime Minister himself had expressed the willingness to walk an extra mile and the Union home minister had said that the talks would be a time-bound one. This the message we would like to convey it to you,” said L Adani to the Nagas gatheting in both the programmes on Saturday and Sunday.
UNC general secretary Gaidon Kamei and many leaders also spoke on both the occasions.
Meanwhile, there were mass prayers programmes yesterday and today in Naga churches praying for the success of the next tripartite talks. Another prayer point has been for the good health of NSCN-IM leaders Isak Swu and Th Muivah.

KNO warns of tragic incidents

IMPHAL, Dec 9 NNN: Four days after having met the government representatives in New Delhi, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), one of the two umbrella organisations of the Kuki militant outfits has warned of the “possibility of unwarranted and tragic incidents” if the government of India continues to ignore to the aspiration of the outfit […]

IMPHAL, Dec 9 NNN: Four days after having met the government representatives in New Delhi, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), one of the two umbrella organisations of the Kuki militant outfits has warned of the “possibility of unwarranted and tragic incidents” if the government of India continues to ignore to the aspiration of the outfit as “Suspension of Operation (SoO) has technically expired on November 22.”
KNO today throws some bad lights on Joint secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Sambhu Singh (in-charge of North Eastern states) saying there is every possibility that the latter had not convey the KNO message to the Union home minister.
KNO had requested for a written assurance from the Central government to start a political dialogue when during the ‘tripartite talks’ in New Delhi on December 5.
“The Joint Secretary’s response to KNO’s request was- ‘I cannot make a decision for a written commitment for dialogue’”, said the KNO.
“We are aware the Joint Secretary (Sambhu Singh) cannot make a decision regarding dialogue as he does not have the mandate; however, he may convey the KNO’s request to the Union home minister. If a written assurance is given, KNO would sign extension of SoO on December 6, but for three months only. As there was no communiqué on 6 December 6, KNO delegates returned home the next day,” the KNO said.
“It may be assumed there is no response from the government because the honourable Union home minister has not yet decided, or because the Joint Secretary (MHA) has not informed the KNO’s request to the Union minister. Logical deduction would suggest the latter reason, and not the first case,” the KNO stated today while adding, “The Union minister has deliberately been kept in the dark concerning KNO’s simple request”.
“There is a potential room for mishap in the lacuna that exists. The honourable minister being kept uninformed could bear serious consequences reminiscent of the Joupi massacre by NSCN (IM)-led Nagas on September 13, 1993 in which 90 innocent Kukis were barbarously butchered to death. Prior to the ill-fated incident, the NSCN (IM) in a notice to the Kuki people of Joupi in Tamenglong district to quit the village by September 15. Fearful for the worst, the Joupi village folk left on September 13, two days before the deadline. In the two days preceding the deadline, had the deputy commissioner of Tamenglong taken responsible administrative action to deploy security forces, the tragic event would have been successfully averted. Please note that the deputy commissioner of Tamenglong district was Shambu Singh, the present Joint Secretary (MHA). Similarly, in today’s situation while KNO is waiting for a reply from the honourable minster, which is owing to a lapse of administrative propriety on the part of Joint Secretary (MHA), i.e. not informing the Hon’ble minister of KNO’s request, the possibility of unwarranted and tragic incidents such as at Joupi could be repeated as SoO, technically expired on November 22, 2012.
“In such an eventuality, the Joint Secretary (MHA) is entirely to blame, but would he care? Should such a calamity be permitted on account an arrogant and self-glorified bureaucrat? Before it is too late, the government of India needs to adopt extreme pre-emptive measures to avoid any serious eventuality,” the KNO cautions.
Meanwhile, the KNO reveals the ‘status quo, post November 22 saying the ground rules (of SoO) ought to continue as KNO has neither abrogated SoO (as GoI issued verbal commitment to begin dialogue communicated unofficially by an emissary), nor signed the 6th extension (of SoO) because response to request for written commitment from government of India, as presented earlier is awaited’.

Vansada (Navsari), Dec. 9 (ANI): Launching a frontal attack on the Narendra Modi-led BJP Government in Gujarat, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Sunday asked voters to get rid of leaders indulging in divisive politics.
Addressing a Congress campaign rally here, Dr. Singh said the people in Gujarat should get rid of politicians who indulge in divisive politics.
Asserting that Gujarat is prospering, but only for some high-profile people, Dr. Singh said: “There are no employment opportunities, development is limited to a select few… large sections untouched by it and the benefits of Central schemes are not reaching aam aadmi especially minorities and backward community.”
“Just look at Gujarat… A major chunk of younger generation is unemployed… The UPA introduced Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to enhance the livelihood security of people in rural areas…  MGNREGA has provided jobs to 1 crore Gujaratis since 2005,” he said.
“Sadly, the benefits are not reaching you… I promise that we will assure you will be benefited if you open the doors of Gujarat for Congress. The Gujarat will shine under Congress and we will show you the real development,” he added.
Further attacking the state’s education infrastructure, Dr Singh said: “Education infrastructure is not good here, tribal children have not been granted good education due to the state government. Dr. Singh’s rally comes two days after Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s whirlwind tour of the state during which she had accused Modi and his BJP-led government of failing to meet the aspirations of the people of the state.
“They (Modi and BJP) have no interest in poor and common people but its only interest is development of its own and a select few people. The development which was promised in a big way is nowhere to be seen in this tribal land…because what they promised were hollow and false,” Sonia said.
“This is a land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel who used to preach what they practiced. Now, there are people who give big advice but do not follow them,” she said taking on Modi without naming him.
Gujarat will go to the polls in two phases on December 13 and 17. The counting of votes will take place on December 20. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made light of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s speech at a campaign rally in Gujarat on Sunday, saying that Singh was just an addition to the Congress Party’s ‘Campaign of Calumny’.

Hnahlan Grape Growers earns Rs. 150 lakhs annually

AIZAWL, Dec 9 NNN: Grape growers of Hnahlan village in Mizoram earn about Rs 150 lakhs annually.
This was informed by leaders of Hnahlan Grape Growers Society to the journos who paid a visit to the village recently.
Of the total 560 families in Hnahlan village, around 400 families are grape growers, Hnahlan Grape Growers Society leaders said, adding that owing to the small winery, the grape growers are unable to sell all their produce. The Society leaders said that  Hnahlan village produced 6600 quintals of grape this year, of which only 1400 quintals have been marketed. They said that they are waiting for the government to upgrade the winery, which will very much help the cultivators. At present, 1,20,000 litres of grape juice have been prepared for Zawlaidi, the Society leaders said, adding that due to inconstant power supply, work cannot progress as it ought to be, and further added that while there is more demand as Christmas is coming near, however, they could not meet the demand, the Society leaders informed the visiting journalists.Zawlaidi is a local grape wine in Mizoram.
In recent times. cut in tax on grape wine has helped boost the locally brewed grape wine Zawlaidi in sales in Mizoram.
So far during this year, Hnahlan Grape Growers Society had purchased 1350 quintals of grapes from the cultivators for brewing in the winery, while Champhai Winery also purchased 1200 quintals, leaders of Grape Growers Society informed.
Hnahlan Grape Growers Society leaders said that from this year onward Oak wood is included in the grape brewing which purifies the smell and lessened its sourness. And as it is brewed longer time than in other years, it is expected to be more tasty and even healthier than that of the wine brewed in other years. After the government has decreased the tax levied from grape wine (Zawlaidi) there has also been a good market so much so that the demand is not even met; therefore, by hiring more labourers, we have to work day and night continuously, leaders of the Grape Growers Society said.
Since there’s a good sale, they could also clear up all the debts during last year, which amounts to Rs. 67 lakhs, and now, there is stock of uncanned 5, 5,000 litres of grape juice, Grape Growers Society leaders said, and expressed their gratitude towards the government for its good support. They also informed that this year they have manufactured 750 ml bottle of grape wine; and even the government also allowed their request to permit manufacturing of 650 ml bottle, however this will not be manufactured by Hnahlan Winery, they informed. 650ml capacity bottle of grape wine will be sold from winery at wholesale rate Rs 95.
Champhai Winery also plans to manufacture 650ml bottle of grape wine from this year, and also will change its name to ‘Zo Wine’; the change in the quantity- 650ml, owes to the decrease in the purchased rate, and the bottle becoming more handy now because of its light weight, and due to the expectation for easier purchase from Zokhawthar. Champhai Winery has 70,000 litres of unsold grape wine in stock now, and still could not pay its debt to the farmers from whom the grapes had been bought, sources informed.
It can be mentioned here that in the beginning of this year, Mizoram’s Hnahlan and Champhai Grape Growers Society had expressed grave concern over their low sellings of the locally brewed grape wine, ‘Zawlaidi’.
Members of Hnahlan Grape Grower Society said, they have so far sold 37 thousand 8 hundred bottles out of 2 lakh bottles produced by them in this season. They also said, they cannot make payment to the farmers for procurement of  their grape in the last harvest season.
During the year 2010, Mizoram after 13 years of prohibiting grape cultivators from producing wine has brought out Zawlaidi, a locally manufactured grape wine, thanks to the amendment of MLTP Act 1997 in 2007. The enthusiasm of the grape farmers has been fuelled by the amendment of the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition (MLTP) Act. The Act had earlier prevented them from large-scale commercialisation of their products and wine-making from grapes.

Some political parties commit folly. Without knowing what is in store for them they put up the demand that do not conform to the need of the time. Withdrawal of support to the UPA Government by the Trinamol Congress was untimed. Trinamol Congress will pay the price for the folly stand taken by the leadership of the party.  BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said foolish man learns from the mistake committed by themselves and the wise from other’s mistake. To which category the Congress party belongs, it is for all of you to decide. Why do we go for election?  We want the best man to rule over the nation. Through the democratic process we can appoint the best man to rule over the nation. None came to our rescue when we faced the real hardship of life. Americans could seek help from the outside countries when it was hit by natural calamities. But India did not go with begging bowls when it was hit by earth quake and other natural calamities. Farmers were putting their hands on head not knowing when the drought hit the nation. But some political parties in the name of fighting for the poor masses thought of advancing the date of election. These political parties had themselves exposed for the non challant attitude shown to the people of the country.  The time has come for all of you to know that when elections are held before the end of the term the public money will be wasted. Childish thoughts of the leadership of the party luck will favour them when election is held should be rejected by the masses. No political party can play with the mandate of the people. If the leaders think they can play with people’s mandate they are living in the fool’s dream. There are political parties who think they can keep the ruling party on the tenterhook without having the required figure. Mamta was a liability to the UPA. In future even if Congress need outside support to form Government it should not think of going together with Trinamol Congress. There is a huge gulf difference between the situation prevailing then and now.  There is Left Party, which is roaring to bounce back. During the one year rule of Trinamol in Bengal has created too many controversies. Even the human rights had been suppressed. The other political parties supporting UPA understand the futility of keeping Trinamol as ally of UPA. Everyone understands that no party will be able to improve their strength in the event of early poll. If election is held now Congress as usual will lead to be followed by BJP in the second position. Too many political parties that moved together with BJP at the centre suffered have rejection by the voters. What happened in Andhra Pradesh is a glaring example.  Be a wise man learn from the mistake committed by the foolish man.
