Imphal, Dec 11: Nupi Lal will be observed today. The main function will be held at Nupi Lal memorial complex. Governor Gurbhachan Jagat said in a message, “It is a great honour for me to join the people of Manipur in paying our tribute and homage to the brave ladies of Manipur who fought against the colonial rule, monopolistic trade practices and feudalism on the occasion of Nupilal Day, 2012.
The Manipuri women rose against the export of rice as there was near famine condition in 1939 as the harvest was poor and the price had shot up making it difficult for the womenfolk to keep the hearth burning. This agitation which is now known as the 2nd Nupilal is a unique historical episode of Manipur and reminds us of the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of these women. They have come out in the front whenever intractable problems descend on the State besides contributing their mite for the social and economic advancement. Later on the women tackled social evils also. When we observe Nupilal, we pay homage and tributes to those brave women, both known and unknown, who challenged the might of the British.On. this day let us also resolve to work together and harder to make Manipur a more peaceful and prosperous State, which will satisfy the souls of those who fought the Nupilal.
Chief Minister, O Ibobi said, “It is matter of great pleasure to join the people of Manipur in paying tribute to those great Imas of Manipur who fought against the British on the occasion of Nupi Lal Day, 2012. Nupi Lal is an unforgettable event in the history of Manipur. It was an occasion in which Manipuri Women exhibited to the world that they have the courage and spirit to challenge the then mightiest world power, the British. The heroic struggle of the Manipuri Women against the British is a rare occasion in the history of mankind. The Day will ever remain as a watermark in the history of Manipur.
