IMPHAL, December: The General Strikes and daily dose of curfew which had been in place for five days in the State affected the normal life of the public in the four valley areas of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur and ended on a peaceful note on the final day today.

The bandh had been called to protest against the inhuman act carried out by self styled Lt Col Livingstong Anal of the NSCN (IM) and calling for action against the police and other para-military personnel who were on duty but stood by as mere spectators when the incident occurred at Chandel on 18th Dec night during a musical concert.

The indefinite bandh was called by Film Forum Manipur, Manipur State Sumang Lila and All Manipur Matam Isei Kanglup (AMMIK) and was later joined by various Civil Society organizations of the state.

The indefinite general strike started from 20th and 21st Dec midnight but was relaxed for two days starting from 23 midnight to 25 midnight considering the festival of Christmas and public appeals for the same which came from the Government and various Civil organizations. The general strike which resumed after the break in between had resumed yesterday midnight ended today at 6 PM.

The bandh caused the shutdown of all educational institutions, offices, inter districts and interstate passenger services, business establishments and markets. The streets remained empty with no protestors turning up to block the roads or resort to setting fire and placing road-blocks. A few vehicles could be seen takes people to attend religious and social functions.

During the evening, some of the road side vendor for vegetables and fishes came out to sell their wares though shops remained closed for the day.
