Today, 13 days old is 2013 which has begun its sojourn with the usual rites and rituals. Wishes, blessings, festivals, and prayers of one sort or another and so on have been showered on earth. Unfortunate incidents notwithstanding, 2013 will stay fresh and new for the whole month of January with varying degrees with the clock ticking. Whether by tradition, all these things take place or 2013 is celebrated with a commitment to bring a better society will show in the course of time . In other words, what is intended will appear through the mode of implementation, the development leading to the end or result by degrees.

What does 2013 mean to life? Life will be the most important issue of all times as long as life exists or lives on earth or until it becomes extinct. There are various subjects coming up for the uplifting and refining life, for some reasons or purposes. Colleges and universities offer opportunities to pursue new myriad courses, degrees and programmes ranging from fashion and interior design to digital and media arts. Look at the curriculum of Wheaton college (Massachusetts) offering 600 courses in subjects including physics, philosophy, computer science, English, Economics, political science, history, and theatre.

Physicists, biologists, anthropologists, philosophers and people from various walks of life from different angles collect a huge collection of information to have a clearer idea of life and its basic patterns. Darwin’s theory is there.  Have they yet

The questions on what life is and how it works have evaded and mystified people from all walks of life since the earliest times. Among those who are engaged in the study of life and its origins and the latest development in synthetic biology are Nobel laureates Sidney Altman and Leland Hartwell, Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, and The Science Network’s Roger Bingham. The ASU Origins Project is said to sponsor “The Great Debate: What is Life?” by going into partnership with the Science Network, J. Epstein Foundation and the NASA Astrobiology Institute.

We all feel and see life growing, maturing and dying.  Some say, “A life has a trajectory and life’s trajectory seems disjointed or to lack continuity, that is disconnected in its unfolding”.

A definition of life which is universally accepted does not exist. Someone writes, “The most critical problem in the world of human beings is that most of the human beings do not exert themselves to know why they are living and what they should have to live for in their lives. Some people say that life is an endless task while some say that life is the mystery which only god knows.”

Living things are different from non-living things. But some see life in non-living things. What is Literarure all about? It concerns life –life. William J long writes,” Now man is ever a dual creature; he is not only a doer of deeds, but a dreamer of dreams…to know him, the man of any age, we must search deeper than his history….we must read his literature, where we find his ideals recorded.

Literature evokes in reader varying emotions of joy, hope, catharsis, and so forth along with revelation, classic insights into truth and beauty and so on which are part and parcel of life.

Somewhere someone said about having “breakfast in Tokyo, lunch in Singapore, dinner in an Indian metro politan city and taking another flight to spend the same day in the same style in other global cities and flying back to Japan.”  One can read daily on the internet, online newspapers published all over the globe like the Washington post, New York Times and so forth before breakfast, bringing to our attention news about  multitudinous things and people from all walks of life.

Life is not the wanderings from birth to death. Literary works immortalize Shakespeare. It keeps life going. Writers depict human breathing bodies without life (– what is life? – ) and various characters and manifold shades of human beings.

Philosophical writings can illuminate the idea of life and the way it works. Let us channel potentials into the best creative activities for the sake of humanity and for uplifting its spirits and live life to the fullest.

By Tinky Ningombam
In my home in Imphal, we used to have a lot of household things that we gave our own unique names to. And these were only understood by the people in my family. Long time ago, when I was a kid, my dad invented a fly swatter with a long stick of bamboo and cut-out rubber tubes , it was called the “housefly” , it was however ill-coined or beyond the grasp of normal imagination, but it was understood very well by people who would chance upon it.

Humans have an innate need for order. We like to assemble our thoughts and rationalize. That is why whenever we stumble across something mysterious or unknown, we try to find ways to adapt it to our thought process. With the need of people to have an order of things in and around us, we start by recognizing and naming things and familiarizing with the names. Things that we discover new have to be named something so that it fits into our rational thought process, more or less.

In our modern world, we have started using new words in our vocabulary that would have seemed weird before. Things like “Why don’t you MESSAGE me” or ‘I want to DOWNLOAD this song” or “Miss-call me”.  These new words are introduced daily into our ever-expanding vocabulary with the help of new products, thoughts and theories that are created almost everyday.

One great phenomenon is also the genericization of brand names. Things that were brands become everyday common words. How many people knew that KEROSENE was originally a trademark of Abraham Gesner ?  How many of us would prefer to say Petroleum Jelly for “VASELINE”?  Or antiseptic liquid for “DETTOL”? DETTOL definitely takes the cake in my list. Who on earth would have thought that all antiseptic liquid formula would be referred to as Dettol by more than a million people? Kudos to Reckitt Benckiser.

These brand names become so popular and strong that it becomes synonymous to the product category.  And just a brief look at our day-to-day lingo shows how many foreign words we have incorporated in our vocabulary, most-oftentimes because it is simpler and better understood.  Like saying “Surf” for washing powder or “Xerox” for photocopy or “Converse” for Canvas shoes or “Naughty boys” for Derby shoes, “Colgate” for toothpaste, “Vicks” for mentholated topical cream. ( “Mentholated Topical Cream” indeed. That would be a fabulous way to mess with the shopkeeper.) Products such as these have become common to our modern life and indispensible.

Sociologically, if one looks at the linguistic developments, one might see that we named things around us, which we saw and used but we stopped naming new things that were foreign and decided to borrow and use the more common and popular names . And in the process came the trademarks.  Hence, now in our society, we have welcomed new words of other languages to slowly populate our vocabulary. Today, I find it hard to speak for 5 minutes without using an English word to mean something. And so do most of my friends.  Day-to-day words from mobile phones, Coffee, Noodles, Buns, Biscuits, Chocolate, Fridge, Table, TV, Film, Cable, Bulb, Wire, Shawl, Jacket, T-shirt, Sofa, Table, Pencil, Stairs, Re-charge, Cream, Bus, Auto, Car, Bike … Phew. One can imagine how many of English words have come to mean a lot of things that we use and need everyday.

Without discrediting the infiltration of branded products into our lives, we continue to witness new lingos and a more global mix of words. Genericized brand names, borrowed product names, indigenous re-appropriation, we will see it all. And in the same line of thought, it is estimated that an average Japanese household have more than 90% of all their household items branded.  This could mean a lot of new words adding into our normal vocabulary. But before that even happens to our homes, it will be fun to see how vocabulary evolves gradually with time. And in our local context, we see indigenous brand names which became common and popular in ours vocabulary such as “Keli-chana”, “Rani-phi”, “Magfruit” , it will be more fun to see if “Machal” becomes a synonym for masala or if “Kangla” for its garlic bhujia.

(As a fun project, the author has been trying to collate Manipuri words for day-to-day household items. Send in yours if you know of indigenous words for common products. Talk to me through Twitter at twitter.com/tnkiy, Email me at : tinky.imphalfreepress@gmail.com )

Ranchi, Jan 12 (ANI): Leaders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) met Jharkhand Governor Syed Ahmad on Saturday and staked a claim to form the next government in the state.
“We told the Governor there is scope to form a new government in Jharkhand and requested him to give us some time to prove our majority,” JMM leader Hemant Soren said.
The JMM, which pulled out of its coalition government with the BJP last week, may look to the Congress for support, but has got no assurance so far.
Congress leaders too called on the Governor today. The JMM has 18 members in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly and the Congress 13.
Top JMM leaders, led by Mr Soren, had been in Delhi on January 9 to meet Congress leaders and try and stitch together an alliance.
The JMM would prefer a tie-up with the Congress to keep Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha away. It also wants the chief minister’s post for Hemant Soren.

Shri Azad said many welfare schemes have been launched by the Government of India for the benefit of the people. Janani-Shishu Suraksha Karyakram is one such programme which has been started to guarantee free healthcare to all the pregnant mothers and sick neonates. But due to lack of awareness, this scheme has not reached the pregnant mothers. He felt that some innovative ways are to be found out to spread the message on these welfare schemes across the country. He expressed his view that the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Ministry of Railways can join hands together in this noble cause. Together we can spread the message to the people, he added.
Addressing the function, Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal, Minister of Railways said RRE – III has succeeded in meeting the objectives of the campaign. He hoped that next phase RRE would be soon launched. He assured support of the Indian Railways in the noble endeavour. He also announced that railways coaches would be painted with messages which are informative and educative for the benefit of the general public in the days to come.
Shri S. Gandhiselvan, Minister of State for health & Family Welfare also addressed the function.
It may be mentioned that the first Red Ribbon Express was flagged off by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson UPA on 1st December, 2007 for disseminating messages on HIV & AIDS. The train traversed over 27,000 km covering 180 stations across 22 states till 1st December, 2008. The second RRE train was again flagged off by Smt. Sonia Gandhi on 1st December, 2009 for disseminating messages on HIV & AIDS, H1N1 and general health issues. The train traversed over 27,000 km covering 152 stations in 22 states.
The Red Ribbon Express is one of the global best practices, innovative and effective in reaching out to a large segment of population with awareness messages on HIV/AIDS and related services. It is the world’s largest mass mobilization campaign on HIV/AIDS. It is a special exhibition train which travels across the country disseminating the messages on HIV/AIDS and general health in rural and remote areas of the country. Along with the train, special outreach programmes are organized in the villages through IEC exhibition vans and folk troupes.
