The theme of the year is healthy drivers for a wealthy state.
Floral tributes were paid to the photos of departed drivers of the state. The Manipur drivers welfare assn. honoured the families of the departed drivers by giving simple gifts.
All modes of transport including passenger services remained totally paralyzed as drivers stayed off duty to  take part in the  observation which started in  1990 and as a mark of respect to their colleagues who served the people day and night and sacrificed their lives  .
The day has been observed by various bodies of the commercial vehicle drivers at different places to pay respect to the drivers who lost their lives while performing their duties. Floral tributes were paid to the photographs of the drivers who lose their life while discharging their duties.
“We are observing the day each year with a demand for a place for us in the society,” the general secretary of a drivers union Kunamani Singh said in a function organised by Manipur Road Transport Drivers’ and Motor Workers’ Union.
He said that as a result of their long struggle the view of the security personnel, police personnel, excise, etc. towards them had changed to a great extent.
“Now the people of the state know the value of drivers but we still need unity to fight for our rights,” he observed.
Speaking at a function organized by the Manipur Drivers’ Welfare Association at Manipur Press Club, All president of the Manipur Interstate Bus Association Budha Luwang alleged that militant groups including those engaged in peace talk were extorting money from the vehicles plying on the national highways in Manipur.
When protested to provide money drivers were harassed and sometimes killed.
January 14 has been observed as Drivers Day in Manipur since 1990 commemorating the day thousands of drivers staged a continuous 7-day protest at the old airfield ,t Koirengei along the NH-39 against the excessive harassment received by them from the security personnel, police and armed miscreants, the bad condition of highways and the problems faced by the drivers while passing through Nagaland and also against the lowering of the status of drivers in the society.
The day became  meaningful when around 200 transport vehicles servicing in the state took out a rally in Imphal city in June 1994 in protest against the brutal killing of one handyman named Naorem Tarun Singh of Kakching by unknown armed miscreants at Jubja in Nagaland.
Following the rally around 1000 transport vehicles gathered at Koirengei airfield and staged a protest for nine days which strengthened the unity of the drivers of the state.

IMPHAL, Jan 14NNN: Digitization of books and other historical records from Manipur State Archives has begun and the same will be made available to the public on the website of the archives.
Centre for Development of Advance Computing, Kolkata (CDAC) started digitization of books and other records at the Manipur State Archives on September 28, 2011 and around 300 books will be covered by the digitization process, an official of Manipur State Archives said on Monday.
However, the process was stopped from December 2012 after digitization of 23, 148 pages of books including other records from the state archives, Keishampat here, the official said. This may be due to certain problem, the official added.
CDAC has already handed 23, 148 digitized pages over to the officials of the archives but another 19, 183 pages in DVD format has to be received from CDAC by the archives, the official informed.
Considering the volume of books and records at the archives, the digitization process is now in its earlier stage as the CDAC has to digitize another 15-20 lakh pages, the official said, adding as the archives has been collecting books and records without interruption, the digitization process will be required all the time.
However, there is also a policy of the state Government to entrust the digitalization work to the state archives instead of assigning the task to other firms and for this, a proposal for procuring a digitization device has been duly put forward to the National Archives, the official added.
The state archives will start the digitalization work after procuring the machine which costs around Rs 40 lakh and the digitized archival records and books will be made available to the public on the state archives website, the official further added.
