Lilong protests kidnapping of girl9

IMPHAL, Jan 18: Tension prevailed in Lilong in Thoubal district of Manipur just after noontime on Friday following a public protest over kidnapping of a 19-year-old girl.
An indefinite road blockade has been enforced along the Imphal-Mpreh road (National Highway-2) Lilong bazaar section by the Joint Action Committee formed against the alleged abduction after joining hands with the local residents.
Salima Begum, daughter of late Abdul Kadir, a resident of Lilong Leihaokhong, was reportedly kidnapped by three men from her her locality on January 11 night. Since then, her whereabouts is still unknown to her family, Md Wahazuddin, convenor of the JAC told reporters.
The JAC started imposing an indefinite blockade along the NH-2 section from 12:30 pm on Friday after the Officer-in-charge and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Lilong Police Station failed to arrest the accused by January 17. The officials reportedly assured the JAC that the police would arrest the accused by that time.
The main accused in the kidnapping has been identified as one Md Abdul Qayum, 30, son of late Md Nazi of Lilong Chingjao.
Protesting against the failure of the police to nab the trio, hundreds of local residents under the aegis of the Salima JAC massed on the streets in Lilong on Friday.
Lilong market was closed due to the protest following which they enforced the indefinite road blockade.
A police team led by SDPO, Thoubal Police Station and OC, Lilong Police Station arrived at the scene and tried to negotiate with the demonstrators, but bore no fruit, resulting in violent standoff.
The police resorted to tear gas canisters firing as they had to control the stone-throwing protesters during which one protestor got hit and injured. But, it was reported to be a minor injury.
They also attacked and damaged one of the escort vehicles of Agriculture minister Abdul Nasir. The minister was there to pacify the protesters.
After a long pitched battle which lasted about 4 hours between the police and the stone-throwing protesters, a large number of police commando personnel led by Dr S Ibomcha, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Imphal West managed to control the crowd. The combined police team was from Imphal East and Imphal West.
Meanwhile, Convenor of the Salima JAC has said the strike will be withdrawn if a police official not lower than an Officer-in-charge gives a written assurance to the JAC that the accused will be arrested during a fixed period.

IMPHAL, Jan 18 NNN : The All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) will go ahead with its proposed 24 hours Manipur bandh from the midnight of Friday.
ATSUM president Muan Tombing said since no effort to address the demands of the tribal students’ body was seen from the government side, they have no other options but to go ahead with their agitation.
Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur (ZSUM), Churachandpur District Students’ Union (CDSU) and Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) have lambasted the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) and advised the latter ‘not to bark blindly’.
ZSUM, CDSU and TKS said today that running out of KSO has been issuing ‘fabricated’ statements to the media.
“The statement insulting the federating units of the ATSUM is ridiculous and does not hold any water in the eyes of the tribals. The three student bodies would like to question on the legitimacy of KSO in matters relating to ATSUM. To put the record straight, the KSO has never been a constituent body in the history of ATSUM in spite of the purported concern it repeatedly conveyed through the media. Further, the ATSUM rather assumes, for good reason, that KSO is crazy after the post, and not on the tribals’ issues. It is very shameful on the part of KSO to vehemently oppose the tribals’ platform to serve their vested interest. The three student bodies advised KSO not to bark blindly at ATSUM but instead come to the mainstream in the interest of the tribals of Manipur,” ZSUM, TKS and CDSU stated.
Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong and Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur resolutely question the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) for remaining silent after ‘repeated abuses’ of their association by KSO in “every press statement” as far as the ATSUM matter is concerned. The two student bodies said it will not be a mute spectator if ANSAM plays hide and seek game and hence seek clarification within three days’ time failing which, the two student bodies will be compelled to take its own course of decision.
It is worth noting that on January 10, All Tribal Students Union, Manipur (ATSUM) had threatened that it would impose a 24-hour Manipur bandh from midnight of January 18 if the demands apprised to the state government on November 27 last year are not addressed by the state government. ATSUM had further warned that in the event of the failure from the state government side to act even after the 24-hour bandh, the student body will announce its further course of action on January 20.
The apex tribal students’ body of Manipur in its lengthy memorandum submitted to the chief minister of Manipur had demanded Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes.
ATSUM also demanded for the setting up of B.Ed centres in the hill districts. It also demanded that adequate teaching and non-teaching staff in the education institutions in the hill districts with better infrastructure.

NSCN leaders should try luck in electoral politics

Union Government has made its stand very clear. Nothing will be done to harm the interest of the state of Manipur and its people. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohon Singh and other central leaders have repeatedly said that territorial integrity of Manipur will remain intact. The mission of the all party delegation has been successful. The words expressed by the Prime Minister were soothing. NSCN, Union Government peace talk will in no way affect the territorial integrity of Manipur. There had been insensitive leaders in the past, who could not know what constitutes a state. They had been taught a lesson or two by the Manipuris in the past. Such leaders had been thrown out of power. The leaders, who could extend cease fire beyond Nagaland are out of power. Perhaps they felt boundary issue was a plaything. But when Manipur burnt they realised boundary issue is different. Why should only the voice of Nagaland be heard while neglecting the voice of other people belonging to other states in NE region. This is a change brought by time, collective efforts of all people. Manipur’s unceasing fight for protection of territorial integrity has borne fruit. The Union Government, which considered implementation of sixth schedule in the state to appease the rebel leaders has also realised the futility of bringing the idea. Peace talk will now concentrate only on Nagaland just as Mizo National Front, which too signed accord with the Union Government focussed on Mizoram only. Laldengha became Chief Minister of Mizoram and consequently Mizoram got peace bonus to the tune of Rs 800 crores. Similar formula can be applied in Nagaland also. Either Isak Chisi swu or Muivah can be made Chief Minister. In tune with the expectation of the Nagas various other schemes can be announced for speedy development of Nagaland. Will Naga People’s Front accept implementation of this formula? If NPF wants speedy solution to Naga problem it should think of making sacrifice to pave way for natural projection of the two leaders of NSCN as the true leaders of Nagas. Initiative must come from NPF. It must show the readiness to accept the two leaders for the top executive post. Sooner the better because Nagaland election is not far away. Nelson Mandela, who fought against apartheid led at the end the Government in South Africa. Every fighter except Mahatma Gandhi tried luck in electoral politics. No wonder they became undisputed leader of the people of their time. Even history’s most hated man Hitler scaled the ladder of power through democratic process. NSCN which is holding peace talk with the Union Government must think of returning to mainstream politics and try luck in electoral politics. By holding executive power they can do more for the people of their state. The chance that has knocked at the door will not come again. After five years the two leaders will be too old to try luck in electoral politics. Thousands in Nagaland might be desiring to see clean and effective leaders holding the mantle of power in Nagaland. We also desire to see that. Having talked about corrupt free society in the past three four decades they will see surely like to transform their thinking into action. Let it happen.
