IMPHAL, Feb 2 MNS NNN:As held in others, world wetland observation organized by Peoples awareness for national advancement was held at Lamphelpat today.
Gracing the occasion as chief guest, N. Biren, MLA said we should think for the future generation.
If Lamphelpat is made as water body as usual, the flood problem in Imphal city will be decreased.
The flood in and around of Lamphelpat is caused due to the ecological imbalance.
Instead of developing Lamphelpat, the construction now taken up has become a hurdle in saving the lake. We have to do sincerely, he also further said.
Environmentalists spoke on the issue of wetland. Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has on Saturday proposed that maintaining of rivers, which are main sources of water for Loktak Lake, is necessary in order to save the largest freshwater lake in North East India.
Addressing the World Wetland Day 2013 observation function held at Khordak Junior High School complex in Bishnupur district, LDA Project Coordinator Ng Sanajaoba underscored the need for proper maintaining of rivers in the state which are main sources of water for Loktak Lake.
The observation was jointly organized by LDA, Sangai Protection Forum, Keibul Lamjao,, Environmental Social Information, Keibul Lamjao, Unique Wild Life Protection Committee, Sekmaijin and Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science, Ningthoukhong.
This year’s edition of the International Wetland Day was observed under the theme “Wetland Take Care of Water.”
Giving the keynote address, Sanajaoba said, “Maintenance of water sources of Loktak Lake was utmost necessary on top of the range of steps being taken up by different NGOs in Manipur for the upbringing of the lake, but that in line with that the LDA has started taking up steps under a new plan called River Basin Management.”
He said that initially a few environmentalists and individuals worked hard to save the lake with their own efforts, but that now more or less the people had willingly joined to save it.
He also alerted that parts of the lake like Pumlen, Khoidum, Ikop and Kharung were getting worse day by day and these watercourses of the lake might vanish soon.
February 2 is observed as International Wetland Day across the globe every year since the resolution taken at the International Wetlands Convention held at Ramsar in Iran in 1972.
Loktak has also been officially included in International Wetland Ramsar Site.Thanga constituency MLA T Mangibabu, LDA Project Director Th Ibobi, Moirang Khunou Zillad Parishad member N Indira Devi, Thanga Zilla Parishad member N Dinesh, Uchiwa Zilla Parishad member O Borni Devi among others also attended the function.
The day was also observed in different parts of the state.

IMPHAL, February 2: As a part of the World Wetland day celebration 2013,  the day was also celebrated in the state today at Khordak Junior High School under the theme “Wet land and water management” along with the slogan of “Wet lands take care of water” organized by the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) in association with the Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, Keibul Lamjao , the Unique Welfare Protection Committee, Sekmaijing and the Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science, Ningthoukhong.

Giving a key note address of the celebration, Project Coordinator Ng Sanajaoba said that as a part of the evolution of the earth it is very important to observe the day. He further pointed out the day has been observed all over the world from the year 1997 after delegates and the environmentalists across countries passed a resolution to protect and preserve wet lands in a conference meeting held at the Iranian city of  Ramsar in  197.

” We  need to have a farsighted vision for our future generations to save the Loktak Lake and other wetland area of the state,” he said

Speaking as a resource person, Environmentalist Dr Shamungou said that conserving wet lands  is very critical since the major issue of conflict between people will be over water resources.  Noting that global warming and climate change is now a reality all over the world, he said that this was the main reason that Manipur is facing very less rainfall last year.

During the observation today, a quiz competition related to the theme was also held.

Meanwhile, the All Loktak lake Area Fishermen’s Union and Environment & Human Development, Manipur jointly organized the World Wetlands Day 2013 at Ching-Lak Bazar, Thanga.

The observation was co-organised by Forum of Indigenous Perspective and Action, Center for Organization Research and Education, Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage, Citizen Concern for Dams and Development and IPAK film production. The World wetlands day 2013 was observed with the theme ‘wetlands take care of water’.

In a press release, the Environment and Human Development, EHUD  said that Loktak Lake is under severe threat due to Ithai Dam operation by NHPC.

It is also mentioned that the Manipur Loktak Lake Protection Act, 2006 is working against the fishing community depending on the Lake.

Today’s observation was dedicated to raise awareness about the lake and the Act by conducting essay, painting, poetry competition and debating in relation with the day. The whole competition was focused on how to save Loktak Lake of Manipur.

New Delhi, Feb 2 (ANI): A Delhi court on Saturday framed charged against five men accused of gang-raping and murdering a 23-year-old student in New Delhi in December 2012.
The accused have charged under 13 sections of the Indian Penal Code by the fast track court. Next day of hearing has been fixed as February 5.
The accused will now face trial for which maximum sentence is death.
The case brought thousands of protesters onto the streets and ignited intense public debate over the failure of the police and the government to stem rampant violence against women in India.
A strictly enforced media blackout on the court proceedings means there will likely be few details about the trial, leaving many with unanswered questions about an attack that was shocking in its brutality.
The student was tortured with an iron rod and raped on a moving bus in the capital on December 16. She was then thrown bleeding onto the street along with a male friend who was also beaten. She died of organ failure in a Singapore hospital two weeks later.
Prosecutors say they have a large file of evidence, including DNA from blood-stained clothing recovered by police.
The five, who police say range in age from 19 to 34, have been appearing in court almost daily for pre-trial hearings on the framing of the charges.
The prosecution wants the men tried for rape, kidnapping, murder and robbery, among other charges.
The trial will be conducted in a special fast-track court that was set up after the attack. The proceedings will take place behind closed doors to protectidentity of victim.

Yesterday, there was a dream,
Which I found true.
I tried to chase it,
Here and there, and,
The dream like a butterfly it was,
That I tried to catch.

Here and there it flew,
But couldn`t catch it nowhere.
A butterfly of many colours a hue.
Here and there it flew,
But I couldn`t catch it as of yet.
Yesterday, there was a dream.

I woke early the next day,
And went down a straight path,
But the path led to nowhere.
Yes, the path led to nowhere.
And I longed for another dream,
Another dream like that of yesterday.

Today the sun rose,
Sure as everyday.
And its light was so mellow,
And a lark sang somewhere in my mind.
Yes, a lark sang somewhere in my mind.

Then the day grew,
And the heat a time few,
And my lark flew away,
Searching for a cooler glade.

Yesterday, I had a dream,
And, today, I long not for the sun,
But the starry night.
For which I wait.

And my lark will come back,
Surely, sometime in the night.
The larks,
The stars,
Together they will live,
Somewhere in my mind,
Sure as the day,
But true as the night.

The movie”Harriet, the spy” is totally fabulous. It is a thrilling movie for children.  I was amazed when I watched this movie. This movie was about the life of a girl called Harriet who always spied on people and wrote everything about everyone in her notebook. There was one thing she did wrong and it was that she also wrote the bad things about her two best friends, Sport and Genie. On one of her spying game, she sneaked in a rich woman`s house and tried to spy on her. Her spying equipments were quiet useful; it helped her a lot. But as you know, she cannot be that skilled to spy in a high security house. And the next moment, she was thrown out of the house but she never gave up and kept saying “I am a spy and spies never give up”. One day, when she was playing with her friends in the park, and she had forgotten that her spy notebook was with the other notebooks on the ground. Soon enough, Marian, a very rich but naughty girl picked up Harriet`s book because it looked like an interesting book as it had the word “PRIVATE” on the cover of the book. Soon she called everyone to hear her read out everything in the book. After that, everyone became Harriet`s enemy, even Sport and Genie. They all decided to take revenge on Harriet and for that, they organised a club called “The spy catcher`s club”. They took their revenge but they went too far torturing Harriet that she became angry and she decided to take revenge on them all and that was the best part. The way she took revenge on all of them was totally fab. After they all learned their lesson; including Harriet, they all forgave each other. They all agreed that Harriet should be the school newspaper editor as they knew she was good in English and that was a happy ending. There are many important things I didn`t mention in this article but I just wanted to show you what the movie is about. Every kid who watches this movie would want to become a spy in no time. Thank you for reading this article!!!

The sun is set behind the mountain,
A warm glow, a half halo,
For birds to wing to their heart,
Yes, swallows up and down,
And round and round.

The evening air, cool for aft the rain,
Heavy clouds yon mountain tops,
Yes, oh heart,
Its the monsoon herald.
Lord, thy light and thy rain,
As in thy fields,
I wonder what to plant in my heart,
That my love will reap –
So that her longing is filled.

For let her offer you –
Bright gold and silver glow,
Then it`s mine to pray.
Give her, Lord,
The shrill and sound of the lark,
And royally, of the elephant.

In thy monsoon, Lord,
Teach us all the sweat of labour,
And deliver us in the end –
As thou didst in the beginning.

The light in the west fades,
The early birds are gone,
And the `hari-nong-nang` sings
The change of guards –
Darkness to reign,
Some to rest,
And some to life comes.

Ceaseless and endless in thy grace,
Grace – a memory returns,
Lord, I was asked to forget,
But that was wrong,
A spurt of the moment,
Let the monsoon rain wash,
The scar marks of time`s errors.
Adieu, Adieu.

My wife calls out, aloud, to me,
In a complaining mood.
But,
That troubles me not why,
For it is of love that she nags,
Of which I dream aplenty.

Yesterday, of yore,
From fear did we cry,
But, as of today-
For care it is.

Our child is growing,
And needs nourishment,
For which birds fly,
From feather to nest.

The human urge to be connected to something/someone is inescapable and makes for a good debate. Do you get restless when you do not check your phone after every 5th minute? Have that tingling sensation on the tip of your thumbs to press you phone pad and see if there`s any messages, somewhat similar to the moments of obsession with your watch in the middle of a lecture to have a constant check on the Time ? Have you had days when you have never shut off your TV and couldn`t sleep without it on ? Have you forgotten the last time when you sat all alone and just sat and thought about YOU ?

The information age has finally dawned upon us and we are intermittently engulfed in the web of technology, info-feeds, pings, smses, bbms and newsalerts from every nook and cranny. Ergo, leading to the birth of two set of people , ones who have given up everything and run to the mountains and the ones who have embraced it. A little birdy once told, that excess of everything is for the record a bad idea. And even though I cannot vouch for the little birdy, clearly, who can trust anyone these days, but the fact does hold some merit if you actually think about it.

We come to a stage now when people want to see and have newer things. New things makes us happy, it becomes good fodder for gossip, it makes us feel something for the First time. `The first time` phenomenon as psychologists say is what is considered as the milestones of human life. A recent study claimed that human beings remember most of our life – memories from our 20`s. The memories of our years in our 20`s are the most nostalgic and cherished for most people. And one of the defining reason is the fact that this is the time when we had most of our `first times` , the first time we left home, the first time in college, the first job… So, it takes more of these many firsts nowadays to satisfy our urge, of our `living life on the edge` , the YOLO (you only live once) effect. Be it hang-outs, sports, gadgets, entertainment, fashion. We are surrounded by many many things all the time.

Boredom, above all things, at some point of my life used to mean the mental and physical state of isolation, without company, without any way or device or media that can occupy/ entertain our attention. It has today has gone through a sea-change atleast for me. My mind travels back in time to the Sunday afternoons of yonder years when I have been left in solitude , with friends who are not available or have better things in life to do than to give me company, when the TV is dead and there fails to be any sign of the power coming back till nightfall, when it is that inopportune time when I would be done reading every bit of newspaper clipping, random comic books around, when I would have scribbled across every possible space of the wall with uncensored graffiti , when the phone would dead because the phone guys wouldn`t fix the cable and especially when the folks would have me grounded. And if you do not believe that ill-luck and lightning doesn`t strike twice, well it happened to yours faithful innumerable times.

And this my young friends was what was boredom

People now, go out , watch a movie in a mall, have lunch at the best restaurant  and then come back, plonk on the chair and says ` I am bored `. Harsh comparison? But I do it too now, I have to admit. Hasn`t this been a lifestyle issue more than a behavioural one.

One good reason is because we want to be constantly `in the zone`. Surrounded by technology, people, new gimmicks. New kicks per se. And we do not need just physical objects or tools, we crave for new information to the extent that we feel empty without it.

As my good copywriter friend says “We are perpetually stuck in a state of information frenzy, we want to know what is happening in the world all the time, not just friends, family or random strangers, we are fed with so much information 24/7 that it feels odd when we do not get them and it feels like `we are missing out on something` ” I , too, have constantly felt disconnected with the world the moment I shut down my laptop.  And I kid you not, it takes a lot of grit to switch off you phone for a week. It takes a lot of guts to delete you Facebook account. I salute these great men, women and children. Even the ones who try. At least for sometime.

Time, I believe, is the most valuable asset in life. It comes after YOU. We should always take out time for the self. Even if it be for a short while. Sometimes we care a lot of what happens around us, what is being said, that we lose ourselves. We can do a lot better if you devote a little time to your own. Think of your life-choices, think of your past, your future, think of the people who have helped you, think of the things you can do to help. Because to be truly connected, one needs to understand the `ME` first and it has to come from within, not from the outside in alone. Give some time to your thoughts. Your opinions matter.

(Counting the number of times someone says `I am bored` doesn`t count as a worthwhile hobby. Tried that, didn`t work. Got bored myself)

Sixty five (65) years passed since India regains freedom from British. Nevertheless, the remnant of the past empire still exists in the form of mental slavery and felony such as the sport-cricket, divide and rule, defeat using own family members, make acts and rules to suppress, hang to death or shoot-at-sight if troublesome. Mentally, India is still enslaved with no remorse to modernize from the imperialistic views. Until today, the colonialism principles taught by the empire are more or less applied in India, little change might have been brought, but it was mainly due to agitations and blockades! The dubious distinction of India to be a racist country is fast perpetuating. Whatever it may be; racism is for oblivious. The sensitive issue is that India is still to understand the distinct cultures, traditions, habitats and the values of life in the Northeast (NE) region.

The capitalism and economic crisis in the NE are poorly understood by the people of the States and the Center. NE States are losing miserably in the present world economical war. At this juncture, our excellent brains are hiding underground in the diseases infested jungles of Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Nepal. The collective knowledge and skills of our brethren’s in jungles, if combined together, can revitalize the downtrodden States of NE to a brand-new height, which the world will recognize it as a unique and culturally rich society of the New World. But the sad part is our government’s tendencies to look myopically the NE people to be like Iraqi, Pakistani, Palestinian, Taliban, or just a buffer zone to any foreign invasion–solely in its endeavor to become superpower. Of course, the adopted colonial centric draconian acts like Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA)-1958, which gives full impunity to the armed forces to kill, maim or arbitrary detention and torture of merely suspected person is becoming a hurdle to the country’s dream for superpower. Life is not just to ‘live and let die’, but it also has a meaning to ‘perform and prosper’ in a cordial manner, to become a superpower.

Recollecting the battles and wars won by guns and swords, which always boomerang with times, the invaders invariably fall down to the knee. Be it the mighty Greek, the Roman, the British or the Nazis all falls with time. There is nothing like big or small in nature. The ecological system of nature taught us that every organism and non-living things are in dynamical interactions in an intrinsic manner. A little disturbance in the system will make the system collapse. Thus, every individual, community or population is more or less essential to interact as a functional unit. Jim Corbett in his book entitled, “Man-eaters of Kumaon”, rightly indicated that the incapacitated tigress, wounded by the poachers/hunters became a man-eater. Human is a social animal, an injured family’s mother, father, brother or sister can do anything to protect her/his offspring/family and for survival. The rule is, “if someone hurt someone, hundreds and thousands will appear, to hurt someone”. This is nature’s law. A prolong suppression or oppression of an individual, community or population, will ultimately be a detrimental scenario in the long run. A synonymous situation of Corbett’s Man-eaters, are in the making.

The young generations of India believed that “rules are made for fools”. Therefore, humane acts, laws, policies and rules, not for fools, are sought after. The law makers earlier, failed to sincerely-study the root cause of ‘who, how and why’ the so-called ‘anti-social elements’ are created, produced or perpetuated within the country itself. Is it the laws and policies of our country: ineffective or inadequate that so many anti-social elements are produced and mushrooming? Don’t we have any other means to control or pacify the militants? Are we at the receiving-end to control our children, therefore, providing the armed forces the special powers to shoot-at-sight their own brothers? The answer is: our borrowed laws and policies needs to be discarded and new ones to be formed and implemented. Geographically, NE region is also in a vulnerable location connected to mainland India by a narrow strip of chicken-necked land and if broken, India will become like headless nation!

Unlike other terrorists, the insurgents of NE never disturbed the tranquility of the mainland India. However, most of them (if not all) are fighting for their recognitions, identities, anti-corruptions, anti-drugs, territorial integrity, developments, fundamental rights, etc. in their own homes, States and region. Their desires cannot be suppressed at gunpoint, but it can be won by social, economic and honest developmental transformations. The subversive activities by the rebels, which is making their lives and common people suffers from all possible malice, can always be resolved through sincere and humane political dialogues. Do we need AFSPA-1958 here?

It is also pertinent to mention that our borrowed acts and policies, despairingly metamorphosed or tagged, the majority of the young NE people to be like terrorists, militants, savages, loose characters in the eyes of the mainland inhabitants. This further alienates, deprives, discriminates or hampered the people to live freely, study or get job in other States of India. The prejudice in giving justice to the twelve years hunger strike by Miss Irom Sarmila Chanu is another example of discrimination by this act. Thus, the differentiation created between the people of this region and rest of India owing to draconian acts, furthermore, brought hatreds and racisms to our country men and can be termed as the most pathetic mistakes of the past.

In a nutshell, if unwanted colonialist styles of acts/rules are not changed within the State/s and the Center, then the Government of India is indirectly influencing to create a modern Indian National Army (INA) to fight against them. History repeats itself! The endangered innocent civilians, who are wronged by the name of ‘disturbed area’, will live underground, someday. Entirely, the role of AFSPA at the present scenario, seems to be only for protecting the conniving politicians, corrupt officials, greedy businessmen, dictatorial radicals, who consciously believed in preserving their name, fame, land, money and whose intention is to make the country fall. These sections of society may always “sworn to fun and loyal to none”, and their credentials of loyalty to the nation is debatable. To save their bottom from exposing, they need a sweeping act to react against what they called ‘anti-social elements’. Our ‘Jawans’ who should be well equipped/protected with sophisticated weapons, vehicles, armors, surveillances and military fatigues to combat the militants/terrorists are rather equipped and protected by the vintage style acts and laws. Hence, implementing AFSPA-1958 for safeguarding them is a gross mistake to India’s economy, development and human rights and a shameful act to the rest of the world.
