IMPHAL, Sep 13 NNN : China’s Yunnan Province was like the North East India two decades ago and even today it claims to be a least developed region of that country, but there is “no city in India” as developed as Kunming in the province in terms of infrastructure and urban amenities.
Manipur MLA Y Surchandra and Prof Amar Yumnam of Manipur University had visited Kunming in Yunan Province from September 4-8 and Beijing from September 9-10 during which they interacted with various Chinese scholars and functionaries of institutes and companies.
The trip was funded by Manipur Government under its MLA Foreign Tour Programme, Kakching constituency MLA Surchandra told newspersons here on Friday.
He said, “Yunnan was like the North East India two decades back and even today it claims to be the least developed region of China, but there is no city in India as developed as Kunming in the region in terms of infrastructure and other urban amenities.”
During the tour they had meetings at the Institute of South East Asia Studies, Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, Kunming and deliberated on the need of development and interest of NE India in general and Manipur in particular.
The need for cooperation and joint venture in the areas like education, agriculture, science and technology and energy, particularly in solar energy was also emphasised. Importance of better relations between India and China was also highlighted during the meeting.
Chen Li Jun, Director, Prof jack, scholar Dr Han Xin Zhong and other 15 professors and scholars besides Dr Guo of Yunnan Academy of Sciences, who coordinated the tour programme, were present during the meeting.
Surchandra and Amar Yumnam later visited three factories of solar energy companies including the Yunnan Economic and Technological Development Zone. Functionaries of the Kunming Chamber of Commerce and Yunnan India Corporation Council were also present during the interactions.
They also visited the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences where they interacted with the Faculty of the Flower Research Institute at the academy. They learnt about the robust research on many of the plants grown abundantly in Manipur as well and how they have been profitably growing them. Surchandra and Amar further visited Great Wall , Tienanmen Square and Om Shiva Yoga Institute run by a Chinese-Manipuri named Nongmaithem Kiran. Surchandra said all the institutions and companies showed their willingness in either joint venture or setting up of their units in Manipur and also for exchanging programme and transferring of knowledge and technology.
