Civil society organisations and students’ bodies in Meghalaya have begun their ‘night road block’ agitation since last night demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
Khasi Students Union (KSU), FKJGP, HNYF, Garo Students Union (GSU), JSSU, CSWO, KWWADA, ADE and RBYF have been spearheading the demand for the Inner Line Permit in the state. These organisations had held talk with the state government on August 29 where chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma had expressed his desire to have other mechanisms instead of implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to control the influx issue in Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the ‘night road blockade’ will continue till September 13 night. The night road block begins at 7 pm and ends at 5 am on daily basis. The blockade has been effective in all the districts of Meghalaya. The extremely busy Guwahati-Shillong road is badly affected.
According to the civil bodies demanding the implementation of the ILP in the state, if the Mukul Sangma government fails to response by September 13, they will announce the next course of agitation which will be more drastic than the ongoing form of agitation.Office picketing, bandhs and other forms of protest had altready been held in Meghalaya this month.NNN
