IMPHAL, December 14: “The weeklong programme of Culture for Friendship and Co-operation which includes dance, music, theatre, film shows, literary event, lectures, and opening of Russian language class among others, will go a long way in strengthening the age old cultural relation of friendship and cooperation between India and Russia,” said state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today.

It was stated at the inaugural function of the “Culture for Friendship and Co-operation” jointly organized by the Manipur Film Development Corporation Limited and Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Kolkata at Manipur Film Development Corporation today.

Addressing at the inaugural function he said that the Indo-Russian relationship is a long standing and time tested relation of friendship and co-operation.

He further asserted that Indian and Russian relationship in the field of culture is historical, and expressed his happiness of having a Department of Hindi language at the University of Moscow, moreover, for the opening of Russian language at Slope Land Public School, Khongjom.

Apart from the relationship the popularity of ballet, circus, and cinema of Russia and the popularity of dance and music, films and theatre of India are well known in the respective country.

Culture unites people across frontiers and the culture of each country in the world is the wealth of the entire mankind and it should be protected, preserved and strengthened for the benefit of us all, he said.

Consul General of Russian Federation, Kolkata, Irina K Bashkirova said that the Russia and India have a good relationship since many decades.

She expressed that the mutual respect, mutual relation and mutual benefit are acquiring both the countries, and further she appealed that all for the development of relationship.

At the inaugural function Director, Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Kolkata, Alexander V Mazirka former Minister of Art and Culture, Manipur, Dr M Nara Singh were also attended.

Giving the key note address of the celebration, the president of SWC, Ch Loken said under the leadership of Rajmohan, the club was established in the year 1961 to work for the welfare of the people in and around Thiyam Leishangthem area. Till today the club has participated in all major issues pertaining to the state, he said.

Giving the speech of guest of honour, Inaoba said the executive members should work sincerely for welfare of the club and understanding the purpose and values of a club as it is a place where the foundation of young children are laid for pursuing their future in the field of sports, arts and culture etc, he added. Inaoba also talked about the importance of having a club in every locality in controlling drug abuse there and inculcating good habits and manners.

IMPHAL, Dec 14: The UPPK has clarified that the two persons arrested by state police from Moirangkhom area on December 11 last along with hand grenades have no connection with the group or the KP Army as claimed by the police.

The SP of Imphal West District Police had claimed that the two arrested persons, Moirangthem Kalachand alias Biren from Wangjing Tentha Khunjao and at present residing at Kwakeithel Mayai Koibi and Khumukcham Bishworjit alias Nanao from Moirangkhom , were active members of UPPK and five Chinese hand grenades along with detonators were recovered from them.  

In a press release issued by the secretary-in-charge, Khuman Laishramcha today, the United People’s Party of Kangleipak stated that following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with the government, it has not participated in anything unlawful or activities deemed unacceptable by the people, while ruling out involvement in the future too. It asserted that the outfit or the KP Army will not take responsibility for the transgression committed by its cadres henceforth.

Further, the UPPK has issued a notice to its cadres who had left the designated camp on leave to report back to the camp by coming December 31. The party and its armed wing will sever all connections with those members of the KP Army who failed to return by that date. The party further urged elders of their households to send or escort them to the designated camp.

IMPHAL, December 14: A meeting was called today at around 8.30 am at the official residence of the Consumer Affairs, Food and PD minister M Okendro located at Sanjenthong. The agenda of the meeting was said to be that oil tankers plying between Imphal to Dimapur were looted. The registration books, driving licenses and other vehicle insurance papers were seized by some miscreants suspected to members of a Naga underground outfit during the last two weeks.

Documents have been seized from at least 26 tankers inclusive of LPG bullet tankers. The reason is said to be for not paying the annual tax to a Naga outfit. It may be mentioned that the tankers are given security escort by the CRPF to and fro.    

At the meeting today, IOC oil depot manager SI Singh, officials of All Manipur Petroleum Products Transporters Association deliberated on the issue today with the concerned minister M Okendro. The minister is said to have intimated the SP, Senapati and concerned IGP, range DIG and to take up necessary action and to prevent such incidents from occurring again. The same was assured to members of the transporters association.

UKHRUL, December 14:  Taking cognizance of the lack of health awareness among Ukhrulites and also taking the opportunity of the festive season to reach out to the larger number of people from the interior parts of the district most of who are currently thronging Ukhrul town for Christmas shopping till the next weekend, the Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL- Tangkhul Youth Council) is organising a Health Awareness cum Free Medical Camp at Ukhrul Town Hall on December 15 (Sunday) at 10 am.

Confirming this in a telephonic conversation, TMNL, speaker, AC Raising told this reporter that they are taking up this camp because people in the district are generally lacking in health awareness.

He further stated that this health programme has been timed to coincide with the festive season when most villagers in thousands are doing their shopping for Christmas here.

“This way we can reach out to greater number of people and provide them with the chance to get benefit from such an important health camp’” he anticipated.

Dr Nelson, MD, director, CHSRC, Ukhrul will be the chief guest of the one day district level health camp.

Among the other doctors and specialists who are expected to take part in the camp include Dr Helena Nongmaithem, Eye specialist, MBA (HCS) OD, Philippines; Dr Lucy Duidang, MO Unit Hospital 6MR, Ukhrul; Dr Jack Shongvah, MBBS, DHA, DFM (RCGP, UK); Dr. Soreingam Kasar, MBBS; Dr Sailemwon, MBBS and Dr Lungshim Makan, nutritionist, iridologist SNHS, UK said the speaker of the Tangkhul Youth Council.

IMPHAL, Dec 14: A staff of the CID special branch was reportedly shot at by a mate. The injured is said to be critically wounded. He was identified as Leisangthem Brojen Singh, 40, son of late L Mani, a resident of Thoubal Leisangthem with constable number 9801073, sources said.

He was shot at around 8.30 am at the office of the Superintendent of Police, CID, special branch which is located near the entrance of the 1st Manipur Rifles Bn, it added.

According to reports, he received a bullet injury from a 9 mm pistol on his right chest and is in serious condition. He is presently hospitalized at RIMS hospital. Media inquiry on how the incident occurred has not bear fruit as the concerned authorities has kept the incident confidential apparently to cover up the shooting.  Relenting to repeated queries, police sources admitted that he was shot accidentally when an official was cleaning his service pistol.

However, sources informed that Brojen had an argument with another staff member and was shot by the staff in an inebriated state.
