IMPHAL, May 22: The Consumer Protection Act 1986 makes provision for the right to safety, right of information, right to choose, right to be heard and right to be redressed for the consumers, said secretary general Consumer’s Club Manipur, N Purnachandra Meitei today.
Nevertheless, in Manipur there are several cases of unfair trade practices, deplorable service provision, defective goods and many other problems, he told the media during a press conference at the Manipur Press Club.
He further stated that without a proper functioning state commission, the district forum alone can’t solve the problems.
The club had received a complaint recently from a consumer who identified himself as Konjengbam Hemchandra Singh alleging that on May 17, he had brough some household items from a Thangal Bazar shop and found out later that the shop had excessively charged from him as compared to other shops.
The consumer had also pointed out that the shop had erased all the printed MRPs and pasted a sticker label on every items, he said.
Purnachandra asserted that although there are nine districts, there are only three presidents with each president taking over three districts.
Purnachadra also lamented that the president who has the jurisdiction of Imphal, Ukhrul and Senapati is unfit and should be changed at the earliest.
The club further appealed to the Union Minister of CAF and PD to take up necessary action on these issues at the earliest.
