New Delhi starts hunt for Sports University site

IMPHAL, August 1: Two officials of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports have arrived in Imphal today to look for a suitable site for the recently announced Sports University in Manipur.

The two officials are secretary Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Ajit M Sharan and joint secretary (Development) Ministry of Youth Affairs, Dr GS Ayyangar.

The two officials called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan and also met with the State Chief Minister.

Later in the afternoon, the two officials accompanied by YAS director N Ashokumar and other staff visited Koutruk in Imphal West district for site location of the proposed university.

The team later visited SAI and SAG Centre at Khuman Lampak Imphal.

Sources informed that the two officials’ visit is scheduled for two days; however they may extend their stay in Imphal if the need arises.

It may be mentioned that the NDA government has already earmarked Rs 100 crore for the proposed university in Manipur.

An area of 250 acres of land will be needed to build the Sports University complex.

IMPHAL, August 1: Star witness in the sensational July 23 Khwairamband Keithel fake encounter case, Teresa Rehman of the “Tehelka Magazine” has been granted permission to appear at a designated court of the CBI based in Guwahati instead of Imphal.

The district and session Judge Manipur East had sent a summon to Teresa Rehman to physically appear before the court and give her statement on the case.

Rehman had filed a report on the July 23 incident along with combo pictures for Tehelka magazine.

In her response to the summon, she submitted a plea requesting permission from the concerned court to allow her to make her physical appearance and give statement in Guwahati instead of at Imphal citing security problems.

Even as the district and session Judge Manipur, granted the permission the date of appearance will be fixed according to the convenience of the court.

Meanwhile, the proceeding for recording statement and cross examination of prosecution witness (no 58) additional SP Thoubal district police S Ibomcha Singh was deferred today following a plea, seeking more time citing non completion of preparation for exhibit to be submitted before the court.

In his last appearance Ibomcha had submitted a five page long statement and due to the lengthy nature of his narration and statement, the court had directed for continuation of his cross-examination today.

At the time of the incident, Ibomcha was the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Imphal and the IO of the case.

LAMKA, August 1: State Health minister Phungzathang Tonsing launched the “Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight” at the Churachandpur District Hospital today.

The inaugural ceremony was also attended by ADC, Churachandpur chairman Langkhanpau Guite as guest of honour and Churachandpur deputy commissioner PK Jha as the president.

The fortnight had started since July 28 and will continue till August 8.

India has been declared ‘Polio Free’ now the objective of the programme is ‘zero child deaths due to childhood diarrhoea’, the Health minister said.

Appealing to the public for cooperation, he also stated that the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Programme is one of the most important programme implemented by the Government of India, especially for children under five years of age.

He encouraged the MLAs, MDCs, government staff, schools, colleges and private institutions to be involved in the programme.

Phungzathang Tonsing also elaborated on the need for the health workers and the ASHA health workers to wear uniforms since they will be the driving force of the programme.

Department officials said that any children under the age of five years suffering from diarrhoea should be provided ½ a tablet of Zinc Sulphate and the other remaining half of the tablet should be discarded and not used again.

ADCC, chairman Langkhanpao Guite also said that the disease can be control with the active participation of the public.

PK Jha said the IDCP is an ambitious project and will cater to the needs of children from the villages and other interior areas whose parents have no easy accessibility to the hospitals.

He further elaborated on the importance of cleanliness in fighting the disease and said proper awareness should be highlighted in the villages.

On the onset of the program, the CMO, Churachandpur Dr Thangchinlkhup delivered the key-note address.

He appealed to the media and all to inform him in case any expired medicines are provided from his department.

During the programme, children will be administered ORS and Zinc Sulphate tablets and will be monitored throughout the two week long campaign. Awareness campaigns for the health workers including Anganwadi workers will also be conducted.

Program workers of the medical department had also presented skits/ drama highlighting the works of the ASHAs, their problems and the overall aspects of their functioning.

Health workers had also demonstrated ways to administer the ORS and Zinc Sulphate tablets during the programme.

Childhood diarrhoea is one of the major killers among children under five years of age in the country, contributing to 11 percent of deaths of under five children. Approximately two lakh children die due to diarrhoea annually in the country.

SP Churachandpur, K Kabib also attended the ceremony.

The minister for Commerce and Industry of the State was speaking on the 15th Handloom Foundation Day today at the GM Hall, Imphal, organised by Handloom Promotion Council, Manipur with support from Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans CS Limited, Imphal.

During the function 37 artisans for promoting handlooms were felicitated.

Besides Govindas, the function was also graced by B John Tlangtinkkhuma, IAS, Director, Commerce and Industries and H Rajendra Singh, Retd, Assistant Director of Weavers’ Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles.

Govindas also added that in the coming 16th foundation day, the department is planning an exhibition of different handlooms and handicrafts of our diverse ethnic cultures. Alongside, the government is also taking up several projects by giving training to interested people in handloom and handicraft.

He further said that the Govt of India has implemented textiles promotion scheme only for the Northeastern States in which Manipur plays a key role in getting such schemes.

He appealed to all the artisans and weavers to work hard and bring out more products in order to promote it outside the State, and so that they represent our identity.

While delivering the keynote address, Salam Chingtam Luwang, chief functionary, Handlooms Promotion Council Manipur said that the main objective of the function was to promote economic integration so that all the ethnic communities of the State can work together as one. He added that each individual must bring out their potential in different ways.

Talking to IFP, the youngest weaver who was facilitated, Wakongthem Dinesh Singh, 19, from Thoubal Leishangthem Leikai, said that he has been helping his sister since he was 10 years.

He said he is currently studying in class 12 and after completing his studies, he wishes to start his own business.

Dinesh said that people should not look for government jobs only, as there are many ways to earn a livelihood, so long as one is creative and hardworking.

IMPHAL, Aug 1: The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students’ Union (IGNTUSU), Regional Campus Manipur has condemned the physical assault on Elangbam Hemakanta Khaba, an accountant of Credible Engineering Construction Projects Pvt. Ltd by Meira Paibis at Koirengei on 29 July 2014, at around 11:30.

Hemakanta was beaten in the wake of the current Inner Line Permit, ILPd demand agitation in Manipur, said Mahaishang Shimray, Joint secretary, IGNTUSU at the press meet held today at the Press Club.

Mahaisang Shimray said that Hemakanta was engaged by IGNTU to construct the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University-Regional Campus Manipur (IGNTU-RCM) at Makhan.

He further said that Hemakanta was assaulted by the Meira Paibis on the ground that he was responsible for bringing in non-local labourers in Manipur and added that the decision in hiring labourers is beyond the victim’s official capacity.

He also said that it is disheartening to learn that civil bodies of the State responsible for keeping vigil of the society could commit such acts without proper verification.

Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students’ Union appealed to the Meira Paibis not to target or assault anybody at random during the discharge of their jobs. It said wrongful accusations could lead to undesirable consequences.

IGNTU also urged the Meira Paibi to clarify on the matter to the victim.

IMPHAL, August 1: Despite repeated issuance of arrest warrants against two of the five accused out on bail in the Pallel drug haul case, police have failed to book the two who remains absconding till date.

Meanwhile, other accused namely Defence Wing RPO, Colonel Ajay Chowdhury and two others RK Babloo, 25, son of RK Bijen of Top Khongnangkhong and Seikholen Haokip, 35 years, son of Telsing Ngamjang (TN) Haokip (former minister) of B Vengnom Tuibong, appeared before the special court Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) as their routine procedure, today.

The two absconding accused have been identified as Letminlal Letminlal Haokip alias Minlal Haokip, 25, son of (L) Kakai Haokip of New Checkon near Brighter School and Zangminthang Tuboi alias Minthang, 29, son of Dousei Tuboi of Bunglung village.

They (accused) were granted bail on May 19, 2014 and physically released from jail the next day along with the three other accused including PRO Col Ajay Chowdhury.

All five were released with stern restrictions against leaving the State and on the execution of PR bonds of Rs One lakh each.

According to a release of the committee, it stated that the City Police’s act of arresting the 106 women protestors is against the laws of the land.

It condemned the arrest of JCILPS Executive Committee member, Pukhrambam Arjun by the Police commandos on July 28 on the false charge that he was part of a UG party. The committee has demanded the release of the Arjun and the women protestors immediately before stronger action are taken up, it said.

Ringsanbou is a Bachelor of Arts (History Hons) 5th semester student of Don Bosco Maram. It said this kind of act should and must be condemned by all right thinking citizens of the land.

Laishram Sarita , a native of Manipur, fights her way into the Final of Women’s Light Category in the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow 2014.  She defeated Maria Mochongua of Mozambique in all the 4 rounds of Semi-final bout.

Sarita

Sarita was born in a poor agricultural family in Thoubal district Manipur. She used to spend her time helping her parents in collecting firewood and in the fields, which helped her build the stamina she has today.

In the final bout, she will face S. Watts of Australia scheduled for 2nd August, 14.15 BST.

 

 

Devendro

In another bout on the same day, Laishram Devendro, a talented World No 3 (Light Fly) boxer from Manipur, storms into the Finals of the ongoing XX Commonwealth Games at Glasgow 2014. He has an easy bout against his semi-final opponent Ashley Williams of Welsh and won by 3:0.

With this win, he is assured of at least a Silver Medal in the Men’s Light Fly (49 Kg ) Category.

In the Final bout scheduled for 2nd August, 14:30 BST, Devendro will fight against Paddy Barnes of Northern Ireland, a tough and experienced world class boxer. Paddy Barnes currently holds World No 3 in 53 Kg category, however came down to 49Kg category in the Glasgow 2014  XX Commonwealth Games.
