SENAPATI, August 13: The monsoon rains failed to deter the public from coming out to pay homage to General Thangal and Bir Tikendrajit today.

The annual Patriot’s Day observation of General Thangal was held at General Thangal Ecological Park, Mayangkhang organized by the Senapati district administration and Thangal Union.

The observation was attended by deputy commissioner Jacintha Lazarus, additional DC Kangpokpi DK Thangboi and CEO, Senapati ADC Rang Peter the occasion as chief guest, functional president and guest of honor respectively.

In the presence of ADM, SP, church leaders, tribe leaders, civil bodies, district level officers, village leaders and Thangal Tribe leaders, the great Manipuri warrior was honoured with lying of wreaths by dignitaries, gun salute from Senapati Police and devotional prayers.

Famous musical band Life Pages and other local bands entertained the crowd.

Meanwhile, the Thangal Union made a representation to the government requesting black topping of the approach road to the park, electrification, renovation, beautification, guest house, drinking water facility and installation of the statue of another Thangal warrior Charai Thangal.

The Thangal Union also expressed displeasure over the inclusion of a “distorted and contentious history of the Thangal General” in the class VI syllabus of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur and demanded revision of the lesson with correct facts from the history.

Other highlights of the observation include prayers and songs from different religious groups and communities.

Deputy Commissioner Jacintha speaking at the function lauded and appreciated the Thangal Union and organising committee for the programme.

The DC also assured to pursue with the State government the demands of the union at the earliest.

CEO Rang Peter, MCS on the occasion praised the leadership of General Thangal and Bir Tikendrajit who are today heroes for the youth to get inspiration from.

IMPHAL, August 13: The Union Minister for surface and transport Nitin Gadkari will be in Imphal to see the overall situation of the State in October this year. Nitin Gadkari gave his assurance to BJP Manipur Pradesh delegation led by Th Chaoba who called on the minister on August 12 at the Transport Bhawan, New Delhi.

According to a reliable source, the delegation drew the attention of the Union minister for improvement and development of National Highways passing through the State, particularly the Imphal-Jiri road. The minister assured the delegation that work will be taken up on priority basis under his direct supervision.

The minister also agreed to the delegation’s proposal of immediate expansion of NH 150 from Malom to Churachandpur. Accordingly, the minister directed the Union secretary for surface transport V Chhibber to expedite the matter, and also directed him to visit the State within a month.

Meanwhile, Gadkari had asked the BJP delegation to prepare a concrete ‘Vision Document’ for development of Manipur and submit it to him so that his government can discuss and take forward the proposal.

Earlier, the delegation had also called on the Union Tourism and Culture Minister in the morning of the same day. They submitted a proposal for a Cultural Institute in Manipur.

UKHRUL, August 13: Even as construction work of the NH-150 along the Imphal-Ukhrul route has promptly resumed with the end of the United Naga Council’s (UNC) ten-day blanket ban on National Projects in Naga areas on Sunday last, the Affected Land Owners’ Association (ALOA) has threatened to heighten its stricture on the progress of the work as the concerned authorities have allegedly turned a deaf ear to their plea for redressal of the affected land owners’ grievances and not bothered to respond till date.

The work of expansion of Ukhrul-Yaingangpokpi stretch along the existing national highway to a double-lane road has once again resumed in full swing since the conclusion of the ban imposed by the apex Naga body on August 10 last, disclosed a highly placed source on Wednesday, while adding that a couple of JCB bulldozers are now being used for cutting the road at Hungpung village area.

Sources further informed that workers of BRTF/GREF are also now being engaged in construction of RCC retaining walls, underground water passages/canals etc. along the road as usual since the past few days. On the other hand, sources from the Affected Land Owners’ Association (ALOA) has today informed that the body is bracing to strictly enforce its stricture on the progress of the said expansion work, alleging that the concerned authorities have till date not responded to their request for an amicable settlement of their due compensation.

“We have no other options but to deploy our volunteers to enforce the ban now,” disclosed the source adding that the same will be worked out within a few days’ time.

It may be recalled here that ALOA had earlier announced that a ban has been imposed on the work progress with effect from August 4 last citing failure of the concerned authorities to address their grievances.

The body has been demanding the government to settle the payment of compensation to all the affected land owners of the stretch from Finch Corner to Dungrei Junction by way of immediate conduct of survey to ensure inclusion of land owners whose names had been left out from the published list and fixation of compensation rate as per the Land Acquisition Act 2013 amonst others.

IMPHAL, Aug 13: Maibam Itomba Meitei, 26, has been officially declared as Guiness Record holder for ‘The most consecutive pinky chin ups’.

Itomba made the record for 16 chin ups in 30 seconds, with his two little fingers.

It may be recalled that Itomba has been trying to make the record since April 2011.

Speaking to IPF over the phone, Itomba said he was extremely happy to get the confirmation from the Guiness team.

“I feel I have achieved something very valuable in life. The confirmation letter which was sent by the team reached me this Tuesday”, Itomba said. He continued that it was his third attempt on March 15 this year, which got recognised by the Guiness team.

“I was not really aware of the rules and regulations, but I was really prepared for this years’ attempt. I took help from elders of The Brilliant Club, Shamushang and The Lakhsh Pioneer Committee of Naoremthong. I would like to thank them for the help and encouragement”, said Itomba.

Itomba is the youngest among six siblings, born to (Late) Maibam Churamani Meitei and Maibam (o) Chandrasakhi. He said he has been interested in sports since his childhood. Itomba had a stint in weightlifting, played at national levels. To keep his body fit, he started body building when he was 14 years old. Chin ups was very much part of his exercises.

Itomba said “I love watching Guiness Records on AXN TV channel. So I thought why not I try myself for the record”. When asked about his future attempts, Itomba said he would like to break his own record before anyone breaks it.

Currently, Itomba is self-employed. He runs an Iron & Still workshop for earning.

LAMKA, August 13: Churachandpur police have seized a huge consignment of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and local brew yesterday evening from a godown at Khumu Jamba.

SP K Kabib called a press conference the same evening to applaud the personnel of Churachandpur police for the accomplishment.

The seizure was made by a team led by SDPO CCpur Immanuel Fimate, SI Thangpu Tonsing and ASI Thanglianmang following certain inputs from reliable sources.

The confiscated consignment include 37 cases of Kingfisher beer, 15 cases of Blue Riband whisky, 25 cases of Officer Choice whisky, two cases of Imperial Blue, 46 cases of Bagpiper whisky, two cases and 20 separate cans of Haywards beer, 15 cases and 336 separate bottles of Foster beer, 16 cases of OC (blue), four cans of Pallone beer, 42 cases of Ramomov Whisky, 21 cases of Mc Dowell whisky, two cases of Tubourg beer, two cases of Budwisers and 11 tin of fermented rise to be used for brewing local booze.

The SP said the owner of the consignment is still absconding; however, he will be produced before the media once he is arrested, he added.

He further said that the exercise of the local police is for the welfare of the society.

Manipur is known for its rice production, but to use it for brewing alcohol is bad for the society, the IPS officer observed.

The SP flanked by the SDPOs of Churachandpur Police and Thanlon Police said the seizure of such a huge consignment which totals up to over Rs 5 lakh is a milestone for the district police.

The Churachandpur police is trying to ensure a peaceful August 15 celebration, he said and added that they will collaborate with the IB, local intelligence, AR, BSF and others to ensure a peaceful celebration in the district.

The police are ready for any disturbances on Independence Day, he said before urging the public to co-operate with the police in the fight against anti-socials.

IMPHAL, August 13: Tension along the Mayailambi returned to normalcy after the two individuals detained by police in connection with the death of a 30 year old man were release.

Lousangbam Santosh Singh, 27, son of L Leishang Singh and Yumnam Sarat, 34, son of Yumnam Ningthemjao both from Chabung Company Mayai Leikai were detained by the Mayang Imphal police since yesterday in connection with the death of Md Habib, 30, son of Md Amuba of Irong Makha Leikai.

Habib was reportedly thrashed by a mob for allegedly stealing a LPG cylinder from the residence of Yumnam Sarat.

Enraged over their detention, residents of Chabung Company Mayai Leikai had blocked the Mayailambi resulting in disruption of normal traffic for several hours.

However, the police dispersed the protestors. Since then the situation along the route had remained tense.

Today Wabagai MLA, Fazur Rahim, Works minister Dr Kh Ratankumar met Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in this regards.

Soon after the meeting both the detained individuals were released.

At the same time, the dead body of Habib was also claimed by the family after post mortem was coducted.

NEW DELHI, August 13 (MIC): The Manipur government observed the Patriots‘ Day celebration at the Manipur Tikendrajit House, Bir Tikendrajit Marg, Chanakyapuri here this morning.

Three portraits of Paona Brajabasi, Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General were decorated at the base of the statue of Bir Tikendrajit where a large number of Manipuris from the National Capital Region paid their homage to the great patriots of Manipur who fought against the mighty Britishers and sacrificed their lives for the cause of their motherland during the Anglo-Manipuri War in 1891.

Lok Sabha Member from Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency Dr Thokchom Meinya led the other VVIPs and public in paying floral tributes to the great patriots.

A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the martyrs.

Lok Sabha member from Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency Thangso Baite, Rajya Sabha Member Haji Abdul Salam, former deputy Chief Minister Thounaojam Chaoba, former minister Salam Ibohal were among the other dignitaries who paid floral tributes to the martyrs.

IMPHAL, August 13: A driver and a handy-man who were allegedly kidnapped from Piphema, were released by their captors unharmed near Kohima super market.

Sources said that the kidnapped victims were released around 8.30 pm last night. Both have reached home this morning.

The driver has been identified as Langonjam Radhamohan, 30, son of L Khalendro of Wangjing Lamding Chirapur and the handyman as Khumanthem Sanjeet, 22, son of K Binoy of Wangoo Mamang Sabel Nongyai Khong.

It may be mentioned that the duo were reportedly kidnapped by armed miscreants during the intervening night of July 25 and 26 on their return journey to Imphal from Guawahti on a truck carrying cement bags.

They were allegedly kidnapped by NSCN-K militants in relation to a monetary demand made to the cement trader whose cement bags they were ferrying.

The armed group had allegedly made a demand of Rs 60 lakh from the trader. It is speculated that the kidnapping is a result of the trader not meeting the demand.

IMPHAL, August 13: A resident of Sora Thoubal district was reportedly killed in a road mishap that occurred last night around 8pm along NH-2 near Zubja BRTF camp.

Sources said that he was run over by a truck bearing registration No NL0 1K-0429 injuring him seriously.

He was rushed to Naga Kohima Hospital but succumbed after brief struggle.

Reports further said that the motorcycle that the deceased was driving had no registration no.

However detailed information could not be acquired till the filing of this report.

IMPHAL, August 13: At least three members of a militant group including a captain reportedly surrendered before the 9 AR post near IB Moreh yesterday morning around 11.

According to highly reliable sources, the surrendered cadres have been identified as self-styled captain Thangtillal Haokip, 65, (army No. 256) son of (L) H Haokip of Chakap village, Sugnu; self-styled sergeant major Mamang Haokip (army No 1561) son of Yamkholen Haokip of Naugkhei Kiokru Boksu police station, Salenpat Myanmar and self-styled private Sanatomba, 25, (army No.2134) son of (L) Nurdin of Moreh ward no. 5 under Moreh Police station.

Thanglilal brought along two hand grenades, Yamkholen one IED, a hand grenade, .32 pistol and Sanatomba one 9mm pistol along with magazine and two live rounds, and two hand grenade, the sources further said.

IMPHAL, Aug 12: A havildar of the 40 Assam Rifles was found dead in a suspicious manner inside his barrack at the 40 AR transit camp Minuthong this afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Md Ahmed Ali, 34, son of (L) Md Amzad Ali of Thoubal Phoudel Mayai Leikai (rifleman NO. G-412217).

Family sources disclosed that they were contacted by the AR authority informing that Ahmed was found dead on his bed around 1pm.

The family further reported that bruise mark were found on his neck, wrist and leg.

Being suspicious the family appealed the authority concerned for video coverage of the post mortem.

The AR authority reportedly rushed him to Raj Medicity but was declared brought death, sources said.

A complaint has also lodge at the Imphal Police station.

His body has been deposited at RIMS morgue after inquest.

Ahmed is survived by a wife and three children.
