Breathing Space for Sharmila

Irom Sharmila Chanu’s release from judicial custody is remarkable. After 13 years of confinement, the Manipur Session judge finds not enough evidence to support that Sharmila was attempting to end

Irom Sharmila Chanu’s release from judicial custody is remarkable. After 13 years of confinement, the Manipur Session judge finds not enough evidence to support that Sharmila was attempting to end her life. Whatever reason the State administration may give for her forced confinement, it is clear that the attempt was to nullify her political activism undertaken for revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958. Or rather, it has been an attempt to silence the voice – a voice which champions the cause of human rights. Needless to say, her crusade against the Act has no parallels. Rightfully, Sharmila has been at media’s focus. Sharmila has been a favourite ‘story’ of the media. She deserves attention because of the rarity of her act, against the draconian Act. Media will continue to report Sharmila’s story even after her movement comes to an end – given that AFSPA is revoked from the Constitution of India. Sharmila’s struggle is being witnessed at a time when news reporting can have background music, capable of sprinkling emotive effects into a story. Post liberalisation, the 24 x 7 television news channel has added new dimension to news reporting. There are competitions among the news channels to deliver the latest news, with fastest reporting to meet the fast-pace life-style. Business logic also suggests that the channels meet the profit demand of corporate ownership. For instance, the flock of television channels that have landed in Imphal in the wake of Sharmila’s release cannot return back empty handed without a story. A television news crew is almost a small-budget film crew, with cameraperson, reporter and their equipment. Financial investment into this kind of news trip is something one cannot give away as charity money for a cause. Reasonably, in their attempt to get a ‘story’, different from their competitors’, they try to extract as many stories out of Sharmila. Insensitive to the fact that Sharmila has just come out from a confinement, wherein she was forced fed, the only question that the television journalists seem to have is a “How do you feel?” Words are virtually put into her mouth to suit their premeditated stories. This is not to question their professional commitment, or to put their credibility at the altar of ruthless diatribes, but a gentle reminder that they have a big responsibility, considering the depth and extent of their reach. Sensationalism must be checked. In our attempt to get the best story, one should not trample upon the subject. Sharmila did not descend from the heavens in a supernatural phenomenon. She rather emerges from the clutches of an oppressive apparatus, which has dislocated the people in their own land. What is extraordinary about Sharmila is that she is an ordinary human being albeit with an extraordinary spirit. Let us give her some more breathing space, for she has pledged to continue her struggle. On her release, Sharmila has appealed that instead of felicitations and adulations to her, people take the right pledges, which shall be beacon for a decisive act against this affront of an act against humanity.

Day out: Emotional Sharmila mingles with ema-vendors

IMPHAL, August 21: A day after her release from judicial custody, Iron Lady of Manipur Irom Chanu Sharmila visited the Khwairamband Keithel where she was felicitated by the women vendors

IMPHAL, August 21: A day after her release from judicial custody, Iron Lady of Manipur Irom Chanu Sharmila visited the Khwairamband Keithel where she was felicitated by the women vendors today around 2:40pm.

An emotive Sharmila was seen mingling with the women vendors of the three ema keithels and others during her first trip to the all-women bazaar in more than 13 years.

Thousands turned up to witness and meet Manipur’s famous daughter.

The police including women personnel had a hard time trying to keep off the people who were jostling for space to get a glimpse of the anti AFSPA crusader.

During her visit to the keithel today, Sharmila prayed before the Keithel Lairembi at Purana Bazar.

Sharmila, later during a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, expressed happiness over the mass gathering to meet her at the Ima Keithel.

On August 19, Sessions Judge, Manipur East A Guneshwar Sharma had ordered Sharmila’s released from custody dismissing charges that she was fasting unto death. She was released the next day on August 20.

Sharmila had begun her fast on November 2, 2000 demanding the repeal of Arms Forces (Special Powers) Act and was shortly arrested on charges of attempting suicide under section 309 IPC.

However, soon after her release Sharmila had continued on with her fast.

I am yearning to have my first meal: Sharmila

IMPHAL, August 21: “I have not had a drop of water for the last 14 years, please help me, I am yearning to have my first meal,” Irom Sharmila said

IMPHAL, August 21: “I have not had a drop of water for the last 14 years, please help me, I am yearning to have my first meal,” Irom Sharmila said in a press conference at the Manipur Press Club this afternoon. She was meaning that the act should be scrapped at the earliest and let a normalcy return to the state.

This was her first press conference at the Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul.

The hunger striker mentioned that she does not want to be treated like a martyr.

“Please do not put me on a pedestal, I am just a common person fighting for my right to life,” she added,

“I feel like the fight for removal of AFSPA has been left to myself only.” She voiced the need for the public to start realising that removal of the act is not possible by herself.

The need to unite and protest in unison is the need of the hour, it is time that the public come out from the zombic state, she said.

Sharmila was accompanied by several right activists and meira paibis, who also supported her view that the fight against AFSPA need to be strengthened and the civil organisations are ready to spearhead the campaign.

Sharmila further stated that the government is made by the public, the elected leaders are sent as representatives of the people and they too need to lend their voice towards removal of the act.

“When people start taking some money for their votes, this ensures that the right persons are not made representatives and are more interested in other affairs. They are not ones who are mainly concerted at bringing salvation for the public,” she added.

The new NDA government should realise that AFSPA is a draconian law and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi should exert to scrap it, she added.

Replying to a query about the current protest of the Inner Line Permit and the protest for AFSPA, Sharmila said that the issue of ILP is also important. However, the two issues can be combined and a joint struggle can be taken up. “It is for the public to decide, the AFSPA robs people of the right to live, let us unite to campaign and do away with this act once and for all,” Sharmila appealed.

ATSUM to impose indefinite eco blockade

KANGPOKPI, Aug.21: The 24-hour total bandh called by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur to press the state Government and Manipur University Authority for implementation of Central Educational Institution (Reservation

KANGPOKPI, Aug.21: The 24-hour total bandh called by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur to press the state Government and Manipur University Authority for implementation of Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 from the current academic session concluded today.

The total bandh was by and large peaceful till reports last came in barring an incident of beating KSO Churachandpur district general secretary, Haoneo Baite at Churachandpur by the district Police personnel.

Condemning the high-handedness of Churachandpur Police, Emboi Serto, president ATSUM, in a very disillusioned tone asserted that superintendent of police, Churachandpur was called for explanation at the KSO, Churachandpur district office but he did not turn up.

The SP Churachandpur should at the earliest render apology before the student body takes far-reaching action, he warned.

The tribal student apex body chief also said that they received a call for negotiation today from the government but ignored it stating that “there is no room for negotiation at this juncture while the bandh has already been in its full swing.”

“If the government holds the spirit of negotiation why was it delayed for so long while the door has been open for many days”, added Emboi.

He continued that executive meeting of the student body will be held tomorrow at the State capital for the proposed indefinite economic blockade from midnight of August 22 and further course of agitations.

Vehicular traffic on all national highways passing through hill districts was paralysed and normal life was affected due to the bandh today.

Reports from Motbung, Sapormeina, Champhai, Leimakhong and Saikul within Sadar Hills and Senapati DHQ., Maram as well as Mao indicated the bandh was peaceful and total.

There are some loaded trucks and passenger vehicles stranded at Mao gate and Senapati DHQ, further indicated the reports.

Students from Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal and other who come for Interstate Youth Festival were given foods and other necessary merchandise at Senapati DHQ by SDSA in good faith while they have been escorted safely towards the State capital by Senapati police said reports from The Hornbill Express, the lone daily newspaper of the district.

At Kangpokpi, shops and other commercial establishments, banks and government office remained closed while managements of private educational institutions and government schools as well as colleges declared a holiday with no report of any untoward incidents rendering the town a deserted looked.

A school principal told the local media that the school management is very much concerned of the student but considering the genuine demand of the ATSUM we feel important to observe the bandh called in the interest of the tribal future.

Parents and guardians of some student pointed out that in fact we are very much worn out of frequent bandh and closure of schools due to one reason or the others however, concerning the demand of the student body and the government as well as the concerned authority attitude we put up with no regret.

A non-local businessman said all business establishments have always been on the deplete part whenever any bandh has been effective but we have to bear for the good cause

IMPHAL, August 21: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) submitted a written petition to the State Governor requesting provision of space in the heart of Imphal to enable the public to express their freedom.

The petition was submitted by Digen Singh, active member of AAP Manipur State city office through the chief secretary.

Underlining the right to freedom of speech and expression and to assemble peacefully and without arms which are fundamental rights of the citizens of this country, protest demonstration is unavoidable, it said.

We often witness frequent protest/ demonstration on the streets of Imphal disturbing the tranquillity of the surrounding of Chief Minister’s or Governor’s bungalow and the means used by police to subdue such protest have often lead to unwanted incidents, it said.

To avoid such problems, it drew the attention of the government to provide a space to ventilate the grievances of the common people to their guardian, the AAP petition said.

Underscoring the historical significance and also being a strategic point in the State capital, it suggested a space near the southern portion of Sahid Minar, Imphal Pologround or somewhere else in Greater Imphal area to enable the public to voice their opinion in the form of sit in protest, public speech etc..

Further the petitioner observed that if anyone violates any conditions beyond the “Lakshman Rekha,” such fundamental right may be curtailed.

Following the petition, the secretary to the Governor of Manipur has reportedly instructed the chief secretary to take appropriate action listing the matter as “desired by the Governor.

However, it is learnt that the chief secretary is yet to give any response in this regard.
