Students, Activists and Intellectuals from various communities such as Naga, Meetei, Kuki and Bodo participated. The celebrations involved flowering tributes and a song written by Comrade Irabot was performed. The gathering stressed the need to reclaim the revolutionary legacy of Comrade Irabot from sectarian organizations and emphasized his views on International Solidarity for which he worked throughout his life. NEFIS emphasized that with the students and the oppressed masses of the North East facing the same problems such as deterioration of traditional communitarian living, encroachment of corporations in their land holdings, environmental degradation, racism and lack of good educational opportunities due to the spread of the capitalist market in these regions. It is time that they break away from the bureaucratic and community oriented organizations which seek patronage from the same mainstream parties which perpetuate inequalities so that they can come together and fight for their common demands thereby carrying forward the real legacy of Comrade Irabot instead of fighting amongst themselves.

30th September is the birth anniversary of the late pioneer Hijam Irabot (30 September 1896- 26 September 1951). Over the last many years, the day have been observed as Irabot Day by different organisations in their own ways. That there have not been any controversy vis-à-vis the different manners of observing the anniversary in the name of Irabot, have been due to the fact that Irabot was a pioneer in various fields.

In fact, Irabot had played pioneering role in various novel fields of Manipur. His roles may be summarized under the following themes; (1) literature and journalism, (2) art and culture, (3) sports, (4) social and economic reforms and (5) political revolution. What added more value while discussing the roles have been his livelihood. He was brought up as a destitute orphan. The then royal family were moved by his personality and had offered a princess in marriage. For that, he was offered properties and a prestigious job. However, he left those properties and job to become a revolutionary. He stood against various forms of oppression that were prevailing in the society: (a) against the feudal oppression or the monarchical regime, (b) against the British colonial rule, and (c) against the oppressive system of the Indian rulers. He played important role towards building a democratic Manipur. On the other hand, he took part in the struggle in the international movement to build a classless society.

Being a pioneer, Irabot have conveyed some messages to our people in the years to come. Those are: (1) As all human beings are being structured within a given political-economic condition; all positive and negative conditions in the society are the products of the political economy; (2) No individual can escape from the political economic structure. Therefore, the only means towards the growth of every individual is to improve the political economic conditions; (3) There is a small chunk of people, who is benefitted by keeping the condition of the society underdevelopment. They are the enemies of the society. Until and unless they are being identified, it is difficult to expose the enemies of the society. Until and unless they are being uprooted, the condition of the society cannot be improved; and (4) A peoples’ democratic movement is essential to develop the society. If armed revolution is essential in order to defend the democratic movement, there should be no frustration in doing that.

Our objectives of organising the Irabot Day Observation are primarily two; (1) To express our respect to the livelihood of Irabot and the roles that he had played, and (2) To have discussion on the messages that Irabot have conveyed to us. We are very serious about the second objective. Because, we are also keen towards making our society a peaceful, stable and fully developed society. In relation to this, there are many things that we would like to collectively discuss. Some of the discussions can be held on the following themes: (a) To which direction and on which path our political economy have been moving continuously since the times of Irabot? What are the forms of oppression and contradictions that have been created by this political economy? (c) Does our condition really calls for a new revolution? (d) What kind of revolution is being required? (d) Who will bring the revolution and how and to which direction?

We expect that all our friends will concentrate on the above issues and make our programme a grand success. May this programme become a step ahead and contribute to the making of a new Manipur.

Long live Hijam Irabot

Victory to people’s democratic revolution

Op-Ed by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations

The landmark Climate Summit convened by the United Nations Secretary-General last week in New York was unprecedented in terms of the participation of leaders, the private sector and a range of other stakeholders. The level and scale of enthusiasm it generated augurs well for global climate action and for future generations. This new momentum must now translate into real action in Asia and the Pacific.

Leaders at the Summit offered commitments that will feed into the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Paris next year. Some categorically committed to cut emissions, and called for greater action to limit the rise in global temperaturesto less than 2 degrees Celsius. Initial commitments at the Summitfor the capitalization of the Green Climate Fund amounted to more than $2.3 billion, with new multi-stakeholder partnerships registered for low carbon and climate resilient development finance, amounting to almost $200 billion. It’s a good start, but much more is needed. To support the public commitments, calls have been made for greater engagement byfinancial institutions, the insurance sector and institutional investors, who hold enormous global and regional savings which can service the risk and long-term capital requirements of climate adaptation and mitigation projects.

The Summit also overwhelmingly supported carbon pricing as a tool to reduce emissions and to improve sustainability,as well as economic growth prospects. Equally hearteningwere the cross-sectoral, multi-stakeholder coalitions which emerged, from the Global Agricultural Alliance to secure food for rapidly growing populations, to the dozens of Governments, businesses, civil society groups and indigenous peoples who pledged to end deforestation by 2030.

The clearest and most pertinent message from the Summitwas thatclimate change is a global threat and must be tackled by global partnerships for a more sustainable future.

The UN Secretary General reminded us that “the human, environmental and financial cost of climate change is fast becoming unbearable.” President Obama emphasizedthat thecost of inaction is far greater than the cost of action. No region of the world knows this better than Asia and the Pacific, where there is a compelling case for urgent climate action.

Between 1980 and 2009 the people of Asia and the Pacific shouldered the burden of 85 per cent of global deaths and 38 per cent of global economic losses due to natural disasters. Just weeks ago, heavy monsoon rains and floods across Pakistan caused more than 300 deaths and impacted more than 1.8 million people. Typhoon Haiyan caused the death of more than 8000 people in the central Philippines last year, with an estimated $15 billion in damages. We are witnessing some of the worstnatural disasters in recorded history, and they are destroying the lives and livelihoods of millions across our region.

Resource and carbon-intensive economies are also economically vulnerable. The Asia-Pacific region uses three times more resources to produce one unit of GDP than the rest of the world. We are not only the region most vulnerable to climate-related disasters, but also to resource-price volatility. As resource costs rise, the economic impacts are most severe onthe poorest and vulnerable in our region.More than 42 million people in Asia and the Pacific were pushed back into poverty due to rising energy and food prices in 2011 alone.

Innovative climate action to improve our region’s energy and resource efficiency not only reduces emissions, butwillalso drivesustainable economic growth in the face of rising resource prices, generating jobs and reducingpoverty while increasing long-term resilience to natural disasters and the impacts of rising resource costs.

Turning resource constraints and the climate crisis into opportunities for economic growth and poverty reduction, Asia-Pacific countries have adopted pioneering strategies to promotegreen growthand environmentally sustainable approaches, while strengthening regional integration and cooperation to address risks and vulnerabilities, which include disasters, climate change and resource constraints, alongside improving trade, finance and investments, as well as physical infrastructure connectivity.

At the Summit, China affirmed its aim to reduce carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 45% compared to 2005. Fiji spoke of their green growth strategy, already in place, and ambitions to generate all electricity from renewable resources by 2030.Malaysia andIndonesia are reforming fossil fuel subsidies to encourage a shift to cleaner energy. Mongolia plans to reach 20-25% of total energy production from renewables by 2020. These are but some examples of the already strong regional climate actions taking place.

But change is not happening fast enough. We need to massively scale up these actions, not only to match the magnitude and urgency of climate impacts, but also to harness the economic growth and opportunities whichclimate action entails.

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific will continue to urge leaders in the region to seize the opportunity to intensify national climate actions and commitments, and to work even more closely together to make our vision of the sustainable, prosperous and resilient future we want a reality.Moving the climate frontier from negotiations and commitmentto realaction is not only urgent but also opens a new window of sustainable development opportunity for all in Asia and the Pacific.

The author is an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). She is also the UN’s Sherpa for the G20 and previously served as Governor of the Central Bank of Pakistan and Vice President of the MENA Region of the World Bank.

IMPHAL, September 30: There have been cases of people outside the media fraternity using media house issued id-cards to avail certain benefits, All Manipur Working Journalists Union president Wangkhemcha Shamjai said today.

He lamented that many contractors have been often found possessing media id-cards and taking undue advantages.

This has tremendously tarnished the images of the media houses of the State, the AMWJU president claimed before appealing to all concern against issuing id-cards to people outside of the media fraternity.

Shamjai also said that the union will be providing 50 kgs of rice at a subsidised rate of Rs 9.50 per Kg to its members on a monthly basis starting this month.

Parties with Congress as a suffix are secondary routes to the Congress, says MPP president

IMPHAL, September 30: `Political parties with Congress as the suffix` are secondary routes for becoming a part of the Indian National Congress, so people of Hiyanglam must beware of this

IMPHAL, September 30: `Political parties with Congress as the suffix` are secondary routes for becoming a part of the Indian National Congress, so people of Hiyanglam must beware of this fact in the bye-poll, stated Manipur People Party president Nongmeikapam Sovakiran.

Briefing the media at the MPP office this afternoon, he said parties affixed with Congress such as the Trinamool Congress, MSCP, NCP are gateways to INC as a secondary route.

Suggesting that these parties are the two sides of the same coin, Sovakiran opined that the Congress is the capital while the parties suffixed with Congress are the interests. Interest is dangerous because it doesn`™t sleep the whole night, he added.

The Congress was established as a public platform for the people of India before independence by an Englishman known as AO Hume in 1885 but became a political party taking an active role in gaining independence from the British. Unfortunately, the leaders of the party post independence lost its bearings with its dynasty rule of the Gandhis, Sovakiran said.

In the context of Manipur, the MPP was formed under leaders like Salam Tombi, Sekmai Chaoba and Yumnam Yaima after separation from the Congress but the party has never used the suffix Congress again from then on, he added.

Sovakiran further said that parties like the P Chidambaram led Tamil Congress Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Trinamool Congress formed by Mamata Banerjee and MSCP formed by Nipamacha are always in favour of the Congress and, in scientific terms, they carry Congress blood in their DNA.

Five MLAs of MSCP have joined INC after getting elected in MSCP tickets. MSCP has now splintered into two parties and people are confused about which of the two represents the real MSCP in the ensuing Hiyanglam bye-election, Sovakiran added.

He said that unfortunately, the returning officer has rejected the MPTC candidate purportedly to stop the confusion created by the two groups of Trinamool `“ the MPTC and MPTCC. The action of the RO of the Hiyanglam bye-poll seems biased.

The Congress is always creating confusions for the people of Manipur, he said, appealing people to refrain from voting for the Congress suffixed parties too if they hate the Congress and instead elect a regional party like MPP in the Hiyanglam bye-election.

BJP is in a friendly fight with the MPP and people should be aware that the Congress has sunk at the Centre and the trend of its sinking will soon reach to peripheries of the country too, he added.
