IMPHAL, September 30: The Sarda Translation Award, 2014 was conferred to Tayenjam Bijoykumar Singh during the observation of the International Translation Day, organised by Sahitya Thoupang Lup (Sathoulup), in recognition of his translation work at the Manipur Press Club here today.
The award named after Ningombam Sarda Devi (1969-2006) was presented by former director of the Song and Drama division, Govt of India, N Nabachandra Singh, also the chief guest of the function.
The function was attended by JN Manipur Dance Academy director L Upendro Sharma as the president, and other poets and literary enthusiasts of the State.
The lecture was followed by recitals and narration of translated poems and short stories of some of the well known poets and writers of Manipur such as the poems of Raghu Leishangthem recited by Simran Lairenjam, poems of R K Bhubonsana recited by Athena Thiyam, the poems of A Minaketan recited by Eureka Yurembam, a short story of Yumlembam Ibomcha narrated by RK Sanathoi, a short story of Lamabam Viramani narrated by L Jimmala and a short story of Bimabati Thiyam Ongbi narrated by Ch Lamnganbi.
Tayenjam Bijoykumar was conferred with the Katha Award for Translation, 2005. He received the Second prize in the International Online Funga Wari (Folk tales) competition, 2007 organised by the Internatonal Manipuri Progressive Forum, UK and the Sulekha.com-Penguin Online Writing Contest (December, 2007).
His original writings and translations in Manipuri have appeared in Sahitya, Wakhal, Poknapham, Saklon etc.
While delivering the keynote address at the function, Saratchand Thiyam said that Sathoulup was established on November 25, 2003 at Imphal.
The Lup works for the development of the Manipuri language and literature and to uplift it to the national and international level, he said, adding that Sathoulup has been observing the International Mother Language Day on February 21, World Poetry day on March 21 and International Translation day on September 30 every year.
