IMPHAL, June 18: The 16 members of Democratic Students`™ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), who were arrested by personnel of Imphal Police Station yesterday for allegedly assaulting a computer science teacher of St Joseph School, Sangaiprou yesterday for corporal punishment have been remanded to police custody for six days.
Gurumayum Rupachandra Sharma, 35 son of G Jadumani Sharma of Uripok Achom Leikai, a computer science teacher of St Joseph School is charged of meting out corporal punishment to a student of the school. The teacher was called by the students`™ body at its office to hold a discussion on the incident but was beaten up. A suo-motto case was registered against them by Imphal Police Station for assaulting the teacher.
The 16 DESAM members were produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West at the complex of Uripok Cheirap Court Complex today during which the court remanded them to police custody up to June 23.
It may be mentioned that amongst the 16 arrested members of DESAM, its president Moirangthem Angamba Singh, 31 son of Late M Saratchandra Singh of Nongada Makha Leikai; vice-president Arambam Thoithoi Singh, 33 son of A Biren Singh of Khurai Nandeibam Leikai and general secretary Pukhrambam Premchandra, 32 son of P Binodkumar Singh of Kongba Nongthombam Leikai are included.
