More than 1,500 people were allegedly killed in a wave of extra-judicial executions by security forces in India’s insurgency-ridden north-eastern Manipur state between 1979 and 2012. Last year, in a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court asked relatives of the victims and activists to collect information on the killings. The court will rule in July whether to order an official investigation which could lead to convictions. Soutik Biswas travelled to Manipur to find out more.

Van Mahotsava celebration 2017

“Connecting People to Nature”, the theme for World Environment Day 2017, implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share. Despite repeated global pledges to protect the planet’s environment, the trees, the animal and other living species and their habitats – and the goods and services they provide – the earth natural resources continues to decline at an unprecedented rate. Human activities are the cause. In such a grime situation, celebration of Vanamahotsova 2017 – provides a timely opportunity to focus on the urgency of safeguarding our valued environment for the wealth, health and wellbeing of living beings on the Planet.

Kudos to Yaneithing Misao for the article titled ‘Farmers of India: Occupation or a game?’

Sir,
As far as mass suicide of farmers are concerned since decades due to lack of irrigation facilities, loss of crop and torture of unscrupulous money-lenders; the Western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat lead us from the front! Yet these two very states get religiously projected as epitomes of “modernity” and “development” by focusing on the glittering flyovers, shopping malls, multiplexes, sky-kissing towers, high-end apartments and highly corrupt but vulgar rich industrialists and businessmen of Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Surat. This very hypocrite and heartless stance on the part of vested interests directly prove that not the unfortunate farmers or poor lot; but only the rich urban elite of the metropolitan cities matter the most in “progressive” “developed” India and let the others go to the dogs!
