Facebook post by Deputy CM’s son provokes sit-in-protest

IMPHAL | Sept 15

The National Peoples Party needs to make a clear stand and we want deputy chief minister Y Joykumar to clarify whether he instigated his son Y Debjit to post a communal statement in the social media against the minority muslims, said president of the Manipur Muslim Welfare Organization Abdulla Pathan to mediapersons today.

The Manipur Muslim Women Organisation organised a sit in protest at Hatta blocking one side of the road demanding that the police take up stringent action against Y Debjit.

Abdullah mentioned that the action of the deputy chief minister’s son is condemned by all for his remarks and Y Joykumar should have handled his son’s misconduct. He should have given out a statement to ease the sentiment of the muslims and still he remains quit, it may be also that Y Joykumar had instigated his son to post the communal statement for political gains.

He added further that such stance will have severe implications in the upcoming polls, Pathan stated.

The MMWO also urged the police to register the complaint against Yumnam Debjit.

Meanwhile, National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO) said that the recent post on Facebook made by Yuman Devjit which “hurts the religious sentiments” of Manipuri Muslims is “uncivil and irresponsible.” The act is taken seriously by NIPCO, said a release.

Having learnt that the comment has hurt the sentiments of other communities, Devjit ought to remove the post and tender an apology by admitting his mistake, it said.

NIPCO also appeals to the Manipuri Muslim brothers that the issue should not be taken into that level of seriousness since the comments were made by an “empty-headed” individual who keeps on updating such posts at social media.

The organisation urged all to resolve the issue in a peaceful manner through discussions and take up measures to prevent such incident, as well as avoid creating disturbance in the daily life of the people, it added.

The organisation appealed to all to use social media with a sense of responsibility and abstain from giving such “inflammatory comments” against other community, it added.

NEFIS decries police’s negligence on death of state youth

NEFIS decries police’s negligence on death of state youth

IMPHAL | Sept 15

The activists of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) along with DAMMS today protested at Gautam Budh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office against police’s gross negligence in the case of the death of a Manipuri youth, Pravish Chanam.

A release said NEFIS Manipur Unit also held a condolence meeting in Khuman Lampak, Imphal, where a large number of students gathered to demand justice for Pravish.

The release alleged that the police have been guilty of gross negligence in the whole matter. Despite the complaint being lodged on September 9, the ‘Person Missing’ pamphlets were issued two days later, it said. The Nithari Police Chowki personnel allegedly did not provide information about an unclaimed dead body despite the matter was being pursued by the police of one station, it continued.

Moreover, when the deceased’s friends went to Nithari Police station which is just opposite to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital on September 13 to inquire about him, they were “brusquely turned out” by the police personnel present there. It was found out yesterday that the body of the deceased was cremated by the Police Chowki on 13th September itself, since it had been lying unclaimed for 72 hours, said the release.

The release alleged “Clearly, it strongly suggests that Nithari Police Chowki personnel had in connivance with criminals disposing off the body, instead of informing the Knowledge Park Police Station where the matter was being investigated.”

NEFIS strongly condemned Noida Police’s negligence regarding the case and has already written to the chief minister of Manipur to intervene and ensure that Pravish’s death is investigated into by the CBI. Demands were made that the probe should especially look into the case from the angle of “connivance between the police personnel, criminals and hospital authorities,” it said.

Pravish had come to Delhi on a visit and had been residing in Safdarjung, Delhi with his friends. On September 8, he went to Knowledge Park to attend a music concert with his friends and was missing after the concert. It has been reported that he was taken in with an injured condition to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hopspital around 10:30 pm, where he was given first-aid by a doctor, said the release.

The release further stated that is not known whether he was discharged after providing the first-aid or forcibly taken away. The next day, early in the morning, a call was received by the PCR of an injured person in Sector-30 Market.

The PCR personnel reportedly took the injured youth, Pravish to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital, where he subsequently died. A complaint in connection to his disappearance was lodged at Knowledge Park Police Station, Gautam Budh Nagar on September 9, it added.

Due to pressure mounted by NEFIS on Noida Police, three police officers have been suspended including two investigating officers and Knowledge Park SHO has been transferred.

Responding to the NEFIS’s demand for apology from the police for making an irresponsible statement citing “drug overdose” as the reason for Pravish’s death, the SSP clarified that the statement had not been issued by police. NEFIS will be intensifying its efforts in the coming days to seek justice for the deceased, said the release.

Special scheme for differently-abled persons in offing: Biren

IMPHAL | Sept 15

Chief minister N. Biren Singh said that the state government is planning to introduce a special scheme for differently-abled persons of the state. He disclosed it while interacting with media persons on Meeyamgi Numit (People’s Day) at chief minister’s secretariat today.

The chief minister contended that most people thought that there were many welfare schemes for the differently-abled persons. However, it has come to his notice that these schemes alone could not support the differently-abled persons effectively, the chief minister observed.

As such, he held lengthy discussions with the officials of planning department and social welfare department to develop a special scheme for the differently-abled persons so that they may lead their life without much burden to their families, Biren said.

He added that many differently-abled persons came to meet him on Meeyamgi Numit with the request of providing livelihood.

The chief minister said that a differently-abled youth, who came on Meeyamgi Numit today, had been provided a loan of around Rs. 1-2 lakh from Manipur State Co-operative Bank Ltd as he knows mobile repairing.

For the unskilled and bed-ridden differently-abled persons as well, the government would find out a means to help them, the chief minister said.

As usual, huge number of people turned up to meet the chief minister on Meeyamgi Numit at chief minister’s Secretariat today.

He attended to 505 complaints and met around 1500 people from 9 am to 5 pm.

Officials of Manipur State Co-operative Bank Ltd, education (S), youth affairs and sports, minority and other backward classes, social welfare and police departments and Manipur State Illness Assistance Fund were also deputed at the chief minister’s secretariat to help attend to the grievances of the public.

On the other hand, the chief minister’s secretariat also made elaborate arrangements for the convenience of the general public.

A huge CGI-sheet roofed makeshift hall was constructed at the parking space located inside the complex where adequate seating arrangements, water, tea and snacks were provided to the visitors.

A medical team along with an ambulance and a team of Manipur fire service were kept on stand-by at the complex for any emergency.
