IMPHAL, November 23: Irom Sharmila who has been fasting since November of 2000 demanding repeal of the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 from the State, was produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate/Imphal West, A Noutuneshwari Devi in the Uripok Cheirap Court today.
Sharmila is under judicial custody after police arrested her for launching an indefinite hunger strike.
She was accompanied by authorities of Central Jail and police personnel for the court appearance.
Sharmila was produced before the court in connection with the ongoing trial following registration of a case by City Police under IPC Section 309. In the court, she is being charged with trying to commit suicide by launching the hunger strike.
During her appearance, the court fixed date and time for conducting further trial of the case.
Speaking to newspersons at the court complex, Sharmila pledged to carry on her hunger strike movement till AFSPA is lifted from the State.
She appealed to the people to extend full support to her movement.
