The arrest of five persons by Kakching police on the charge of involving in a murder case has sparked violence at Khongjom today where protesters blocked road, burnt tyres and shops were forced to shut down in the Khongjom bazar area during the two-hour road block which started from 5 am to 7 am morning. The National Highway 39 was also disturbed during the road block by the protesters.
The protesters were demanding to release the five persons unconditionally namely Sapam Sundar (40), Chingkham Tompok (45), Chingkham Herojit (20), Th. Dilip (28) and Heikhrujam Amarjit (25) who have been arrested by the Kakching police from Khongjom bazar on October 18 at around 12.30 early morning. The five persons, all of them from Khongjom bazar were arrested by the police on the charge of involving in the murdered of Moirangthem Rajen (47) s/o (L) M. Ahanjao of Khangabok Turel Wangma, Wangjing Lamjing Bazar but staying at Khongjom bazar from long time back.
Kakching SDPO, A.J. Sharma and Thoubal DSP (Operation) Y. Chandramani rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Later, the police allowed some of the protesters to meet Superintendent of Police, ThoubalĀ regarding the case. However, the meeting could not bring any consensus between the two parties.
Sources said, the arrested five persons were handed over to the ThoubalĀ Police Station for further enquiry.
Registering strong protests, the protesters also formed a Joint Action Committee christened as JAC Against The Arresting of Innocent Persons From Khongjom Bazar.
It may be recalled here that Moirangthem Rajen (47) was beaten up black and blue by some unknown persons on October 15. Later, he was admitted to Raj Polyclinic for treatment but succumbed on October 16 at around 5 pm.
