IMPHAL, November 14: The main round of the 37th Junior National Badminton Championship 2012 organized by Manipur Badminton Association at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium begins today.
Unilkumar alone cleared the first round of the U-17 boys’ single for Manipur and in the girls’ section N Purnima Devi alone entered the 2nd round after getting a work over.
The main round opening day function was attended by Governor Gurbachan Jagat as chief guest, Manipur Olympic Association President, Bijoy Koijam as president and Parliamentary Secretary (YAS & Tourism), Prithiviraj as guest of honour.
Addressing the function, Governor Gurbachan said that Manipur has a very rich heritage in games and sports since the time of kings. There are various indigenous games of Manipur. Setting up of various sports infrastructures is underway at hill districts too for overall development of sports in the state.
Parliamentary Secretary of YAS & Tourism, Prithiviraj speaking at the function said, since the passed many years, countries like Thailand, Indonesia and china have been dominating in this game badminton, but Saina Nehrwal winning bronze medal at the recently held London Olympic Games has given an inspiration to the young players of the country. Now he firmly believes that India will be producing many more world class players in the near future.

Unilkumar Leishangthem of Manipur defeating Shubham Prajapati of Madhya Pradesh by 21-12, 14-21, 21-15, enters round of 64 in the 128 format of U-17 junior boys singles today.
In another match, Aimson Singh Oinam of Manipur was lost to Rohan Kapoor of Delhi by 21-13, 21-15.
In other round of 64 matches, Manipur’s Devjt Singh Rk losing to 6th seeded player Rahul Yadav of Andhra Pradesh by 14-21, 21-13; Yaitomba Irengbam losing to 11th seeded player Siril Varma of Andhra Pradesh by 21-14, 21-13; and Samir Hussain losing to Divum Gupta of Jammu & Kashmir by 21-16, 13-21, 21-14, are now left out from the tournament.
In the format 64 junior girls’ U-17 matches, Manipur’s Purnina Devi entered round of 32 after getting a work over as Yajum Loa of Andhra Pradesh did not turn up for the match, while M Somibala Devi, Y Dhanabat Devi and Rubashah Hussain were defeated by their opponents.
Four players each of Manipur will take part in the U-17 boys’ and girls’ singles.
