Imphal, Dec 20 : The 14-hour Greater Imphal markets bandh imposed by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) protesting against both the state and Central Governments for ignoring the resolution taken by Manipur assembly on the implementation of ILP in the state paralyzed normal life on Thursday.
During the strike, women vendors of greater Imphal staged protest dharnas from 9 am-3 pm at their respective markets demanding introduction of ILP in the state.
The demonstrations were organized at the three Kwairamband Ima Market Sheds, Singjamei bazaar, Pishum bazaar, Kwakeithel bazaar, Konung Mamang bazaar, Khurai bazaar, Lamphel bazaar and Tera bazaar.
The protesters held placards reading “Implement ILP System in Kangleipak” and “No ILP, No Indigenous People.”
Number of inter-district passenger buses was less, markets and shops in the greater Imphal area downed shutters and the roads wore a deserted look due to the strike. Education institutions were closed and the Government establishments were also affected by the bandh which started from 4 am and ended at 6 pm.
