IMPHAL, August 19 NNN: Around 20 houses including six pari (acre) of paddy fields in Sangai Yumpham area in Manipur’s Thoubal district have been submerged by water after a portion on the Wangjing river banks in the area caved in and overflowed around 10 am Monday.
Official sources in IFCD, Thoubal informed that a team of the district IFCD headed by its Chief Engineer and Section Officer rushed to the site after receiving information that a 30 ft portion on the right side of Wangjing river at Sangai Yumpham was breached and flooded several villages and submerged standing crops in the village area.
The official team tried to repair a breached site on the Tentha banks section of the river since early morning, the sources said, adding while doing so, the river suddenly overflowed and flooded the Sangai Yumpham area.
The team then rushed to the site and started restoration work on the breached portion around noon. They were helped by the locals. At around 5 pm, they could control the flooding up to 75 percent. The repairing work was also joined by Tentha local MLA P Brojen and Khangabok constituency MLA O Landhoni Devi. MLA Brojen brought one JCB and tipper trucks to assist the work.
The overflowed water of the river flooded the area after heavy rains lashed the state during the past few days, the sources said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister O Ibobi has instructed the IFCD to open the Ithai barrage gate over the Manipur River to ensure free flow of the Wangjing river water and to control the flooding in the Sangai Yumpham area, official sources said here.
Sources in the state IFCD said that the water levels of Imphal River, Iril River, Nambul River and Manipur River have not swollen so far.
