IMPHAL, March 23: A team of media persons and Women Action for Development (WAD) on Sunday visited Thoubal area to meet family members of (L) Wahengbam (n) Thoi Devi of Thoubal Kiyam Siphai, Heibong Leirak, who died allegedly from electric shock on January 25.
Speaking to media persons during the tour, Longjam Bishworjit president of the JAC formed in connection with the death of Wayenbam (n) Thoi Devi said that the JAC had already filed a complaint with the Thoubal police regarding the death, however, the police is yet to take up an FIR.
He decried the police for being silent on the case and alleged the involvement of some higher ups in the case.
He further lamented that Thoi’s body was cremated in her husband’s locality without the presence of her parents and other family members.
Uncle of the deceased Thoi said that he had adopted her since her childhood.
He charged, Thoi’s husband Keisham Purnachandra of Kontha Ahal Lup of threatening her with a mobile clip taken before marriage inside a restaurant.
The two got married on November 10, 2013.
After her marriage, she had called her mother and informed that her husband was having a relationship with another woman who was already five months pregnant, and that Purnachandra wanted to divorce her so as to marry the other woman, he alleged.
On January 25, 2014, the family was informed about Thoi being electrocuted while charging her mobile phone, he lamented.
He further demanded for proper investigation and gave capital punishment to accused Purnachandra.
