CorCom declares ‘General Strike’ on April 29 defying President’s visit
IMPHAL, April 26: CorCom, an umbrella body of different valley-based underground groups operating in the state has called ‘General Strike’ on April 29 against the proposed visit of Paranab Mukherjee, the President of India, said a statement.
The President of India is scheduled to attend the Convocation ceremony of Manipur University on April 29. CorCom has termed the proposed visit as a ploy to continue the colonial hegemony of India in Manipur. Hegemonic oppression in the minds of the colonised people is best achieved through subtle form of domination, which is by nestling in the consciousness of the colonised people. The best way to fight this kind of subjugation is through education and it is the best way to fight colonialism, maintained the statement.
CorCom further claims that the present system of education is ‘false education’ imparted to create ‘false consciousness’ among the colonised people. The group questions the motive of the visit, recalling that the President had earlier visited the state to take part in the Diamond Jubilee of Adimjati Shiksha Ashram. Instead, the President turns a blind eye to the struggle of ‘Chanu Temsingnabi’ Sharmila; other problems like proliferating drug menace, rising number of unemployed youths etc. President of India pays unsolicited attention to ‘crowning glory’ like the Manipur University said the statement.
The strike will begin from 6 am till 6 pm. Public essential services like medical, media, water supply, electricity, fire service and religious ceremonies are exempted from the strike, the release said.
