Absence of judges made Sharmila wait for case hearing

IMPHAL, November 9: Anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila who recently completed 15 years of fasting against the Act was produced before the court of the CJM Imphal West at Chierap

IMPHAL, November 9: Anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila who recently completed 15 years of fasting against the Act was produced before the court of the CJM Imphal West at Chierap Court today.

Sharmila was however made to wait for some hours due to the absence of the CJM I/W RK Memcha who has already been promoted to Grade I of Manipur Judicial Service. The charge of the CJM I/W is presently held by CJM I/E A Noutuneshori who is also reported to be out of station.

Eventually, the hearing was transferred to Judicial Magistrate First Class, (JMIC) Imphal West.

In the process, Sharmila who was brought to the court complex around 10:35 am had to wait for more than a few hours in the Cheirap Court complex.

The case hearing was conducted by JMIC Alek Muivah, who due to other case hearings at the Lamphel Court, arrived at the Cheirap Court around 2pm.

The delay in the court hearing for which, the anti-AFSPA crusader was made to wait for long also drew much flak from several organisations who condemned it as an act of negligence on the part of the court authorities.

Speaking to media persons, the Iron Lady also regretted the incident.

She reiterated her movement which she had initiated 15 years ago is for the general public and not for her individual self.

She also charged the Centre of playing an inhumane game by not listening to the demand to repeal the AFSPA.

Condemning the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs to meet activists like herself, Sharmila said such guideline is a dark law and will further hamper the freedom of activists.

It may be mentioned that the MHA guideline says that anyone willing to meet an activists in jail like Sharmila would have to deposit Rs one lakh as security.

Sharmila meanwhile lauded the defence witnesses who made themselves available near her during the whole process.

Vice president of the All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers & Pullers Association L Gojen who was present at the court premise as a defence witness said the association supports Irom Sharmila and her movement and further lamented that she has been charged under u/s 309 (Attempt to suicide).

He said the charge is not correct and that the court has released her unconditionally on repeated occasions.

Organisations like the Kabui Mothers’ Association and Women Action for Development that were also present in the court complex showing solidarity the Iron Lady Irom Chanu Sharmila also condemned the negligence of court authority.

Advocate Anand Prasad from Rajasthan and a research scholar from the University of Chicago Sayanthan Saharoy were also present at the court complex.

Irom Shamrila will further be produced before the court on November 23.

CHURACHANDPUR, November 9: The leadership of the Joint Action Committee against anti-tribal bills met the Chief Minister today and submitted a charter of demands.

Meet underlines peaceful co-existence amongst ethnic people of State

IMPHAL, November 9: A one-day public discussion on peaceful co-existence amongst the ethnic people of Manipur was jointly organized by United People’s Administrative Council (UPACO) Manipur, National Identity Protection Committee

IMPHAL, November 9: A one-day public discussion on peaceful co-existence amongst the ethnic people of Manipur was jointly organized by United People’s Administrative Council (UPACO) Manipur, National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO); Thoubal Ima and Meeyamgi Thoudang Club (MTC) Sugnu at Ching Tam Community Hall, Sugnu today.

Khunyamba of Sugnu Moirangthem Babuchand Meitei; vice-president of Thoubal Ima Elangbam ongbi Ibecha Devi; chief of M Monpi village Haokip; ex-president of People’s Council Ngamkhulet Haokip and chief of Makhao Tamoak village Kontang Haokip attended the discussion programme as presidium members.

Speaking at the occasion as a resource person, convener of JCILPS Khomdram Ratan asserted that the rich art and culture of various ethnic communities, unique existence of hills, lakes, rivers, roads and bridges in different parts clearly implies that different ethnic people of the State cannot separate from each other.

He maintained that people of hills and valley have been jointly protecting integrity of the State since time immemorial.

Products of the hills are used in valley. Likewise products of the valley are used in the hills. This is a clear indication of the peaceful co-existence amongst the people of the hills and valley since time immemorial, he observed.

Calling upon the communities to shun sense of disintegration and alienation from others, the JCILPS convener noted that such separate thoughts will hamper peace and tranquility in the State which in turn will threaten existence of the indigenous people.

He also mentioned that ever since Manipur annexed to India, the State has fallen prey to divide and rule policy of the latter.

Being a victim of divide and rule policy, the State has not able to become self-reliant mainly in daily needs, Kh Ratan said.

Reiterating that the three bills passed by the State Assembly were for the whole people of the State not for a particular community, he expressed grave concern on the increasing influx of outsiders which has threatened existence of the indigenous people.

He clarified that JCILPS could not visit families of the nine civilians killed in Churachandpur incident due to time factor.

However, the committee will visit the bereaved families in a favorable time, the JCILPS convener added.

Addressing the gathering as one of the resource persons, advisor of UPACO T Rameshwor said that the origin of the hills and valley is same and that the fact is clearly mentioned in approved textbooks.

Secretary of Human Resource Development, United Committee Manipur (UCM) and advisor of UPF BM Yaima were also present at the public discussion as resource persons.

The Peacock’s Feather

As winter approaches, it has already begun to feel like a time for reflection. Perhaps this is because it is the season of festivals, both secular and religious. The most

As winter approaches, it has already begun to feel like a time for reflection. Perhaps this is because it is the season of festivals, both secular and religious. The most important of these festivals are, Christmas, of one of the most important religions of the world, and of course Diwali, arguably the most widely celebrated festival in India. But in a more local context there are also, was also the just concluded, Kut harvest festival, the upcoming Ningol Chakouba, the Sangai festival and in the neighbouring state of Nagaland, the famous Hornbill festival. We have no intention of delivering a homily on the approaching festivals as well as those just gone by, and we are not even qualified to do it. However, the winter mood inevitably drives many, and we join them, to reflect on some of the many mysteries and intricacies of life – most particularly human life. A National Geographic feature some time ago on “sex” provides a pad to launch a rumination on one of these mysteries. The theme of the feature was based on Charles Darwin’s theory of “Natural Selection” and how this is part of the natural process of propagation of species, and how sex is the most perfected mechanism nature designed to effect this “Natural Selection”. The assumption is that instinctively, sexually reproducing life forms (which is nearly the whole of the animal kingdom and a greater section of the plant world), tend to mate with partners who are perceived to have the best genetic characteristics needed for survival and propagation of species. A lot of zigsaw puzzles of mating behaviours of animals seem to fall in place, from viewpoint of this theory. Even in the case of human beings, this seems to explain why there is so much concurrence on the general perception of certain types of body figures and vital statistics, as attractive. But there are problems, and as is almost always the case, the problems give more food for thought than the successful explanations.

One of the problems, as the National Geographic documentary pointed out is the peacock, incidentally India’s national bird, known for its colourful feathers and its characteristic strut. Charles Darwin is said to have remarked that the sight of a peacock was always extremely painful for him. Although said probably in jest, the remark is understandable, for how else can the peacock’s cumbersome feathers be explained in terms of the Darwinian theory of natural selection. The feathers make the bird extremely clumsy, making it easy prey for predators; it hampers its food gathering manoeuvres therefore reduces its survival chances; it is a dead weight during flight therefore making the bird expend more energy to traverse distance etc., and the list of disadvantages the bird suffers because of its tail can be much longer. in short, it is not a survival accessory and should have been long eliminated by the theory of Natural Selection. Consequently, peacocks with the most feathers should have died out leaving behind the less feathered but fitter and agile amongst the species to carry on the survival struggle. The fact has been just the opposite. For reasons that cannot be satisfactorily explained in scientific evolutionary terms, the peacock’s chances of finding a suitable peahen to mate with depend precisely on the fullness and brightness of its strut. The National Geographic feature demonstrates this by studying and noting the diminishing success rates of peacocks with feathers pruned in varying degrees, in finding a mate. What then has the peacock’s feather to do with evolution? The feature merely presents this as a frontier for science, but such questions seldom fail to transport the enquirer to the realm of religion.

But it is in human behaviour that more profound evolutionary problems are encountered. The enigma is most engrossing when it comes to the question of the human qualities of love and compassion. Even if these are also the qualities of others in the animal kingdom, there is one that distinguishes the human species – its capability of transferring parental love to non-offspring. That is, the phenomenon of adoption. In modern times, the practice is also growing. There are more evidences of the forces of Natural Selection continuing to determine human behaviour. The human emotion of compassion is one of these. The pressure of Natural Selection is supposed to be to eliminate the weak and unfit in a species so only the strong and fit lives on. Humans have turned this logic upside down, and feel protective about the weak and lame, the handicapped and mentally challenged. So is this a signal of the dead end of the road for Natural Selection and propagation of own genes. Would this prove to be a disadvantage for the human species in evolutionary terms. Perhaps, but the National Geographic features only calls this a brave new world for evolutionary science. Whatever it is, whether it ultimately dooms or uplifts the human species further in evolutionary time, there can be no doubt this will still be a reaffirmation of the magic of human life that makes it worth the while.
