About Rhythms of Manipur

Rhythms of Manipur, founded in 1985, is a rare Manipuri performing group specializing in traditional as well as in fusion arts. An important centre for Manipuri dance and music, over the last twenty six years it has undertaken extensive concert tours and research to revive rare performing art forms of the region. So far the group successfully performed at Kolkata, Guwahati, Mysore, Bhopal, Shillong, Kohima, New Delhi and other places in connection with important festivals.

The group also scored the music of various ballets, plays, films – mention may be made of the Engallei Ballet of Manipuri, Jagoi Marup, which bagged the best production award at the 3rd National Ballet Festival 1992, the childrens film ‘Paari’ produced by the Children Film Society and directed by celebrated film maker Aribam Syam Sharma – Paari, featured in many international film festivals in 2000.

The group was actively involved in the first Bharat Rang Mahotsav organized by the National School of Drama in 1999, and in other national theatre festivals held at Bangalore, Kolkota and Kochi. In 2002, it performed Moirang Sai Opera at the Brahmaputra river as part of the fifty-year’s celebration of Ford Foundation in India. Its fusion music production, Journey, based on the tunes and rhythms of four north eastern states produced by the Doordarshan (National Television), Imphal was judged as the Best Entry in the Music Category in the 10th National Doordarshan Annual Award 2009-2010.

The group members have performed with Tal Kravitz, celebrated Israeli musician, in an event organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Embassy of Israel in 2010. In January 2012, at the 14th Bharat Rang Mahotsav organized by National School of Drama, the Rhythms of Manipur’s newest production – Operetta Loika Loikum – was performed. The Rhythms of Manipur has been supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, since 1994.

Manipur,IMPHAL, January 31: 3 days 4th Children Film Festival inaugurated today at Manipur Film Development Corporation Ltd.(MFDC) auditorium, situated at palace gate, Imphal. The festival was jointly organised by Manipur Film Development Corporation and Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI). To showcase the festival 7 children films were selected to picture at the MFDC theatre.

The inauguration function was attended by Commissioner (Art & Culture) Dr. RK Nimai Singh, Director Art and Culture K Sobita Devi and film critic and national awardee RK Bidur Singh as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking to the function RK Nimai Singh said that the children films selected to showcase at the MFDC theatre need to film place to place to reach every part of the state. He further said that children films are needed to promote more as it is almost neglected in the state of Manipur. He said that the films which are to be screened in the MFDC theatre including animated films will witness good films to the children of the state. The children films are not only for kids but the films are worth watching for the adults too concluded RK Nimai Singh.

Dr. K Sobita Devi delivering presidential speech said that children film festival was started from the year 2005 in the state of Manipur. She continued that it was unfortunate by that time because the department had no theatre to showcase the film festival. She lauded that today the department is jointly organising the 4th Children Film Festival at its own theatre.

Today one Manipuri film ‘Paari’ was screened to kick starts the children film festival. The film was produced by Aribam Syam Sharma.

The Programme Coordinator of the Festival June Yun-kyung Kim informed the film maker Syam Sharma for screening the film in the section- `Special Section: Beyond Bollywood` of the 14th edition of the international film festival. The invitation came after the Jeonju festival authority selected the Manipuri film during the Kolkata International Film Festival.

Based on the Sahitya Akademi Award winning drama- Leipaklei written by Arambam Samarendra, the film tells the story of a woman- Leipaklei who is separated from her husband and whose life is surrounded by the hard trials of fate and is burdened with sustaining herself and her little daughter.

Leipaklei had an enthusiastic response from the audience and critics when it was screened during the 18th Kolkata International Film Festival held in Kolkata in November 10-17, 2012 and was the inaugural film of the 5th Guwahati Film Festival held at Guwahati in December 10-16, 2012.

It may be mentioned that Aribam Syam Sharma made his directorial debut in Lamja Parshuram (1974) after scoring music as well as acting in the very first Manipuri film, Matamgi Manipur (1972) directed by Deb Kumar Bose. His directorial debut is said to have beat the then superhot Hindi film running in another theatre in Imphal, Raj Kapoor`s Bobby.

His second Manipuri film was Saphaabi (1979), based on a Manipuri folk story and received the national award in regional category.  His third Manipuri film, Olangthagi Wangmadasoo (1980) was a block buster film and also bagged the regional award in the National Film Awards.

Syam Sharma`s  Imagi Ningthem in 1981, marked the first Indian film to have won the top prize of `Grand Prix` in the Festival of Three Continents, Nantes in 1982.

His Ishanou (1990) which was screened in the Un Regard Section of the Cannes International Film Festival in 1991 and travelled to many major international film festivals was considered as another masterpiece of Syam Sharma and was screened recently in Indian International Film Festival, Goa in the Centenary Indian Film section among 27 Indian films selected. Acclaimed as one of the most original film makers of India by international critics, Aribam Syam Sharma, now 73, had won five National Film Awards in Manipuri features and eight National Awards in non-features.

A recipient of Padmashri in 2007 and V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008, Syam Sharma  was the first Managing Director of the Manipur Film Development Corporation Ltd, a Government of Manipur Undertaking established in 1987. During his tenure, he laid the foundation for infrastructure development and film promotional activities like organizing national and foreign film festivals and has authored an autobiography entitled –Living Shadows which was published by the Guwahati Cine Club.
