NORTHEAST COMMUNITY LEADERS MET UNION HOME MINISTER SHRI KIREN RIJIJU TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF CIVILIANS IN CHANDEL DISTRICT FOLLOWING THE AMBUSH AND KILLING OF 18 SECURITY FORCES IN MANIPUR

New Delhi,9th June, 2015 ~Collective delegation from the Northeast Region of India met  Mr. Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State on 8th June 2015 in North Block to appeal for his immediate intervention to the recent situation in Chandel District of Manipur. The delegation strongly condemn the ambush which left 18 security forces dead and scores of others injured that belong to the Dogra Regiment and have also expressed deepest condolences to the departed Indian Armies and shares the pain and sorrow of the bereaved families.

When the delegation apprised the Minister of Home for State, Mr.Kiren Rijiju on the present crisis in Chandel district, he has given his assurance that he will act on it and convey these concerns to concerned Ministers and authorities. The Minister also added that the concerned state government must cooperate in this process and must also inform the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Defence Ministry that are being taken care of from the side of the state administration.

Keeping in view the past history of massive human rights violations during army operation, the collective leaders led by Mr David Boyes, Ms Binalakshmi Nepram, Ms Alana Golmei

and Mr Zuchamo Yanthan have submitted a memorandum demanding the following points for the safety of the innocent people in Chandel district:

 (1). The presence of civil police, and women’s representation in all military combing operations.

(2). Deployment of state police including women police officers and setting up of booths in those areas to coordinate with the army while they carry out the operation.

(3). Constitution of an immediate fact finding mission with immediate effect comprising the political parties, civil workers both men and women.

(4). That the present crisis must not lead to further suffering of the civilian in the areas.

(5). Ensure for peaceful combing operation without violating human rights bearing in mind the bitter memories and experiences of Oinam village in Manipur on 11th July, 1987. (After the killing of nine soldiers by NSCN, a counter insurgency Operation Bluebird was launched in Oinam village on 11th July, 1987.  During the operation, there were unimaginable massive human rights violations of rape, torture, illegal arrests and detention, burning and dismantling of homes, dismantling of schools and churches, looting of property and forced labour took placed)

(6). Ensure the involvement of women in any peace process in Northeast India. There are presently 17 ongoing peace talks in the North East. However, not a single woman is included in the process.

The meeting with Minister lasted for 45 minutes and he has assured his best possible support to safeguard the people of Chandel district, Manipur and for people of Northeast region

IMPHAL, March 30: Binalakshmi Nepram has been awarded the L`™Oreal Paris Femina Women Awards 2015 in the category of `Face of A Cause`. This is the first time any Manipuri or from Northeast Region has ever won such an award.

The awards were given away in Mumbai last week at a ceremony held at The Leela.

In a statement issued by Femina, Ms Nepram was recognized and honoured for continuously and selflessly striving to make this world a better place. Femina also stated that women like Ms Nepram are `Women of worth who have been silently working for various causes and issues concerning the society`¦ woman with extraordinary accomplishment, outstanding leadership qualities and exceptional commitment to her career and community`.

In a statement issued by Ms Nepram, she said, `In honouring me, Femina has honoured the women of Manipur and Northeast India`. She dedicated the award to the brave mothers of Manipur & Northeast India who through their sheer grit and determination have steered the course of history of state and region inspite of over 60 years of armed conflict. She vowed that she will be working with several women across Manipur and region to bring about much needed change for peace and progress.

Audience in the hall that witnessed the ceremony included Ashwariya Rai, Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor, Ritu Kumar, Neha Dhupia, Supriya Pathak, Tanistha Mukherjee, Huma Qureshi amongst many thousands of other whos who in country.

Ms Nepram polled over 120,000 votes to win the award besides a selection by an eminent group of jury that consists of Ritu Kumar, Ashwini Natchappa, Supriya Pathak etc

Born to parents Nepram Bihari and Yensembam Ibemhal, Ms Nepram hails from Sagolband Nepra Menjor Leikai.

Ms Nepram is poet, author of 4 books and is founder of award winning organization Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network and Control Arms Foundation of India.

She is recipient of several national and internationally recognized awards for her work on women led initiatives for peace and downtrodden women survivors of armed conflict in Manipur and Northeast Region.

In January 2015 prestigious Forbes (India) Magazine named her as one of `24 Young Minds to Watch out for in 2015` and London based organization, `Action on Armed Violence` named Ms Nepram as one of top 100 influential people in world working on armed violence reduction.

Whole of Manipur and Northeast Region has been celebrating Ms Nepram`™s win since news of award came in, a first ever win by any Manipuri or a Northeastern.

The Oslo Forum is one of the leading global network of conflict mediation practitioners. In the past, a number of high-level participants including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Gerry Adams, Mohammad Khatami, Martti Ahtisaari, Bono, and many other luminaries have participated in the Forum. The Oslo Forum have also hosted several Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Leading mediators representing governments and regional organisations as well as key United Nations actors charged with negotiating peace were also present.

In her visit to Oslo last week, Ms Nepram met with His Excellency Mr Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and spoke with President Jimmy Carter who is the 39th President of USA. Ms Nepram gave to both dignitaries the beautiful Leiroom woven by the women of Manipur which was received with great warmth by President Jimmy Carter. Ms Nepram also met and spoke with Mr Tim Sebestian, founder of BBC Hard Talk besides several dignitaries who are engaged in peace talks around the world

 

In a statement issued after her return from Oslo, Ms Nepram said, “My participation at Oslo Forum sincerely will go a long way in ushering much needed peace in 60 decades of violence that has engulfed India’s Northeast region. Citizens across Northeast region too aspire for peace,progress,development and hope this is achieved with collective,sincere,dedicated,united efforts of all. 45 million people of India’s Northeast deserve to live with dignity,without war and loss of lives. I went in peace and have returned with lessons for finding peace for us all. The journey for peace have begun and this time it will be led by women of the Northeast”.
