IMPHAL June 23: Discovering the movement of underground cadres in Khudengthabi area of Chandel district, troops of 31 Assam Rifles launched an operation in the said area and apprehended two cadres of the proscribed UNLF yesterday. 

According to an official release, the apprehendees have been identified as Md Tomba, 22, s/o Naba Chawaba of Kwakta, Moirang and Tazimur Rehman, 22, s/o Enamuddin of ward no.5,Moreh.

One AK 56 rifle, 2 mobile phones and Rs.1,100 were recovered from the two who along with the recovered items were handed over to the Imphal West Police station.

In yet another incident, troops of 23 Assam Rifles launched an operation in the Nongda area of Ukhrul district and apprehended one cadre of KCP outfit yesterday, it added.

The cadre has been identified as Leishram Abungcha alias Shushil Singh, 23, s/o Laishram Yaibi Singh of Chingningkhok Maning Leikai. One mobile phone was recovered from him, stated the release.

IMPHAL June 27: The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) in support of the nationwide protest of journalist in the issue of delayed wage board notification will wear black badges at work tomorrow in solidarity.

AMWJU general secretary Sujeshwor in a release stated that the Indian Federation of Working Journalist, Confederation of Newsapers and News Agency Employees Organization, PTI, UNI, IJU, NUJI and AINS will be observing the protest and also requested state news houses to leave the editorial blank.

Further, non journalists employees are also requested to support the protest, the black badges can be collected from Manipur Press Club, the release states.

IMPHAL, June 30: A man succumbed to his injuries at the JNIMS after being assaulted by Meira Paibis of Chumbreithong on the charge of committing theft today.

According to a statement issued by the SP Imphal East district, today at about 11:30 pm two unknown persons were caught and assaulted by the Chumbreithong Meira Paibis along with others for allegedly stealing articles from Veirot Workshop at the area.

It said that as a result of the assault the two persons received serious injuries on their persons and evacuated to the JNIMS hospital for medical treatment however one of the injured victim succumbed to his injuries.

A case has been registered against the people of the localities at the Heingang Police station and three accused have also been arrested in this connection, it said.

IMPHAL, July 2(Newmai News Network): The All Manipur Tribal Union (AMTU) has strongly condemned reported manhandled a man mistaking him to be the general secretary of its organization (COPTAM) who identified themselves as members of a particular social organisation at North AOC in Imphal on June 28.

AMTU demanded from the state government to look into the matter urgently and book the culprits. It also appealed all the concerned authorities and civil society organisations not to engage in notorious activities that may disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

AMTU then expressed resentment over an incident where a traffic police personnel directed abusive langauge aganst its president D.P Panmei who is also a former minister. The incident occurred at M.G Avenue on Saturday, according to AMTU.

IMPHAL, July 22: A Tree plantation drive was carried out by 15 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under the aegis of HQ IGAR(South) at Phundrei, Thoubal on 22 Jul 2011.  A total of 500 saplings including 150 Gulmohar, 100 Jack Fruits, 100 Karpoor and 150 Neem were planted. Commandant 15 Assam Rifles alongwith Pradhans/Headman of neighboring villages like Langathel and Phundrei and approx 200 School children from the area undertook the plantation.  Representatives of the State Nursery department were also present on the occasion. The local people, especially the School children were impressed upon the significance of Green environment in today’s modern world.  The local populace have expressed gratitude at this yet another noble step taken by Assam Rifles.

IMPHAL July 25:M. Prithiviraj, MLA Moirang today donated rice as initial emergency relief material to flood affected families who are residing in makeshift relieve camps situated in Moirang Kendra.

Owing to rise in the level of water at Lotak Lake, several houses located in the low laying areas in the vicinity of the lakes have severely affected Privithiraj told to media persons present during the distribution of relief material.

Altogether 930 affected families are camping in various places of Moirang. Each families were given 10kg rice as initial relief material. The relief material was distributed at Mayai leikai mandop, Moirang girls’ high school, Turen mapal mandap, K. boys’ juniour high school and Sendra road mandop all located in Moirang kendra.

IMPHAL July 28: The Assam Rifles in a release clarifies that on July 27, columns of Assam Rifles observed movement of terrorist trying to cross the Indo Burma border at Nambisha.

It states that on finding the presence of the AR troops near the border, the UGs ran towards Mayanmar. The AR troops fired on the fleeing terrorists and it was later informed by villagers that two IG cadres have been injured but managed to escape.

IMPHAL, Aug 3: The Federation of College Teachers’ Association Manipur (FECTAM) has appealed to the students and guardians to bear the inconveniences of cease work strike for some more time until the state government fulfills the demands of the college teachers.

A release of the association stated that the college teachers are demanding the revised 6th UGC pay scale not only for their personal benefits but also for the upliftment of higher education sector in the state.

The state government has neglected the demands of the teachers for quite a long time. The teachers are concerned with human resource development of the state by enhancing the quality of higher education, it said.

The FECTAM further appealed to all concerned to render a helping hand to save the degrading higher education of the state.

IMPHAL, August 13: For the first time in the history of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal the Martyrs` day was observed in a befitting manner in the Administrtive block on Saturday at 8 am. The Director, Prof S. Sekharjit, said that the day is observed to remember and pay tribute to the brave forefathers. This is also to educate the medical students of RIMS about the fight for the preservation of independence and the indomitable spirit to remain as an independent nation.

Dr Thingbaijam Sudirranjan narrated in brief how the British colonialists took undue advantage of the deep division and internecine wars among the princes. We observe the day to remember the sacrifice made by the forefathers for the cause of our independence, he said.

Apart from the Director, high officials, a large number of faculties, staff and medical students were present in the function. Later they paid floral tributes to the photographs of Prince Tikendrajit, Thangal General and Paona Brajabashi.

IMPHAL, Aug 21: An area cleanliness drive was organized near Lilong Bridge by troops of 28 Assam Rifles and local residents.

According to a release , a large number of local residents participated in the cleanliness drive to cut the overgrowth of vegetation along the Imphal – Moreh road. The road is an important communication route connecting a number of important Districts in the state. A number of IED’s were recovered in that area in past few days. The overgrowth of vegetation along the road was providing proper concealment to the IED’s and hence acting as a hindrance for surveillance by security forces in the area. A large number of traffic ply on this route daily. Providing safe passage over this route has always been a challenge for security forces. The people were motivated and enthusiastic for this cleanliness drive and the effort and concern of 28 Assam Rifles towards the safety of local populace was highly appreciated the release added.
