Veil of secrecy over Framework Agreement Pervading air of suspicion

There must be a reason why the Framework Agreement inked between the Centre and the NSCN (IM) is such a highly kept secret. The BJP, notably Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National president Amit Shah, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Centre’s Interlocutor to the peace talk RN Ravi have all maintained that the Framework Agreement does not contain anything inimical to the interest of the neighbouring States, particularly Manipur, but the question of greater importance is whether the assurances can be taken at face value.

Letting professionals run DIPR Keeping the people informed

No doubt about this. The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) has changed for the better and one reason for this possibly could be the decision of the then Congress Government to make this department strictly professional.

Not that this will stop corruption. But this is perhaps the first visible sign of the State Government delivering a powerful statement that it is intent on pulling up those involved in corrupt practices. How successful the initiative of the Government is will depend on whether the Government has taken up this initiative with the sincere attempt to check graft practices or is more concerned with playing to the gallery.

People’s Day Bridging the gap

For too long, there has been a big gap between the elected Government of Manipur and its citizens. The successive Governments hardly bothered to understand the ground reality.

Belated Call: Equality in place of majoritarianism

Better late than never. We can only take solace from the fact it is, in most cases, better late than never. Of course, we are referring to Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren’s thought provoking call to give up Meitei-centric mentality.

Right venue for seminar on bridging the gap Nearly two years down the line

Bridging the gap. The venue was right too. Churachandpur and here full credit ought to be given to the Editors’ Guild, Manipur (EGM) and Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union (MHJU) for organising a seminar that sought to bridge the gap between the different communities residing in the State.

Defeating the spirit of 2003 legislation Wrong priorities

Defeating the spirit of the stringent anti-defection Bill passed by Parliament during the time of NDA-1 under Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2003. It was with a purpose that the then BJP led NDA Government decided to amend the then existing anti-defection Bill passed in 1985 during the regime of the late Rajiv Gandhi, and make it more stringent by making it mandatory for 2/3rd of the party’s strength to switch side, making it practically impossible for any elected member to switch side.

If press is presstitute then how about them ? Shameless ! Shameless !

If the press is infamously referred to as ‘presstitute’ then what term should one use while referring to the party hoppers, who have no qualms about switching sides, even after they are elected ? A classic example of eating breakfast as X, having lunch as Y and eating dinner as Z. This observation is important in the face of the manner in which a number of Congress MLAs have decided to switch side to the BJP.

Not exactly a test but the BJP led Government cannot afford to sleep over the matter. If not tackled early and rightly, then it has all the potential to snowball into a major issue and no one, least of all the BJP led Government would want it. On the face, it may just be about the appointment to the post of the Attorney General of the State, but a look at the prevailing situation says that it has the potential to be much more than just the appointment to a post. Time for all to take stock of the reality. Just rewind a year or two back, and one can easily recall the days of street protest in Imphal and the valley area, with the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System spearheading the movement that a mechanism be put in place to check the influx of non-local people into the State and one will get a fair idea of the point that is sought to be made here.

Peeking through the FA pact Onus on the NSCN (IM)

If what The Week has published is anything to go by then the NSCN (IM) will certainly have a task at hand to sell their ‘idea’ of a settlement to the Naga people.

Yes sir, yes sir syndrome Addressing the crux

The yes sir, yes sir syndrome. In asking Government officials not to only nod ‘yes sir, yes sir,’ while interacting with their political bosses, Chief Minister N Biren is trying to send out the message that Government officials need to come out and convey what is in their mind to the political leaders. Anyone who has seen Government officials interacting with the political leaders will understand the point that the Chief Minister was trying to convey and Mr N Biren could not have come out with this observation on a better platform.

More people to people contact. This is the call of the hour. Now with the BJP led Government reaching out to the hills and which has been reciprocated well, it is only right that different civil society organisations and the student bodies based in the valley and the hills too try and reach out to each other. There are reasons why this observation is being made at this juncture.
