World Population Day and our environment

July 11 is celebrated as the World Population Day and it is an international awareness campaign to call people on stage to know the reason of this exploding population as well as solve the big mistake of whole human fraternity. This great awareness event is to bring a population revolution globally as well as breaking sleep of all the deeply slept people to pay their full attention and help in combating the population issues and environmental problems.
While we talk about conserving the nature, the most important factor that comes to mind is the population explosion. The famous Heidelberg Declaration signed by 425 prominent scientists, including 52 Nobel Prize laureates at the end of the conference in Rio called overpopulation a ‘plague’ comparable to ‘hunger and pandemics’.

‘Act Northeast’ before ‘Act East’

The demise of Isak Chishi Swu, Chairman of the Naga rebel outfit, National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), and President of the outfit’s ‘government’, the Government of the People’s Republic of Nagaland (GPRN), is a great loss to the Nagas, particularly to those in Nagaland.

Moreh and Yongchak

It was omnipresent, this bean-like thing! In and around the landmark Ima Keithal (Mothers’ Market) in Imphal, this stuff was being stacked and sold by hundreds of wholesalers and retailers. ‘Maybe it has got something to do with Yaoshang celebrations the next day … … for decorative purpose, like we in Tamil Nadu use mango leaves and palm fronds as festoons’, we guessed among ourselves. Concluding thus we gave no further thought to it but it was intriguing to see that ubiquitous stuff. Our Guide, Krishna, was not around with us; he dropped us near Ima Market and fled away. Maybe he imagined that the shopping Gopikas would swarm him!

Rather the whole world, including the extremely racist Indians, should learn from the British or Britain what liberalism, humanity and equality are all about.

How can you manage a school in this tiny garage?

If schools can go on in the middle of honks and traffics, then it’s true to put the result that goes toward making the pockets heavy. “If you find a space for a classroom then make it into school,” this has been the definitions of those school principals who had an aim from childhood that, “He wants to be a billionaire in Manipur.” Without proper logic of ‘what a school should consist of,’ have made the word ‘education’ the fastest means to fulfil those kind of childhood dreams. During spring, when the world enjoys newness and explore the freshness, they keep sitting in the same classroom from first to the last bell listening to trainers not teachers.

Without any discernible intention I finally got a chance to go to Kakching Garden. We were 3 families in two cars. After a nice siesta we started late and we were not sure whether the garden would be open or not when we reached the place. I wanted to ascertain the position. Luckily I could confirm from the local MLA that the garden will remain open till late in the evening. We reached the garden at around 4 in the evening.

Bishnupur – In search of an old Mandir

(contd from previous issue)
I had imagined it to be a very vast complex in half ruins that give a special mystic touch of archaeological value to old monuments. But this was comparatively a small, neatly preserved structure; just a mandap without statues or artistic works, at least on the outer surface. I do not know if I had expected something magnificent like Angkor Wat in Cambodia (one of my dream destinations) or the Sun Temple of Konark (a favourite haunt while I was in Orissa, now Odisha).

ST demand & restoration of pre-merger political status

(contd from previous issue)
14. India imposed Armed Forces Special Power Act-1958
The British imperialists enacted the inhuman Armed Forces Special Ordinance in 1942 to crush the Indian freedom movement. The democratic India enacted a much more heinous version called the Armed Forces Special Powers Act called the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) on 22 May,1958. The AFSPA is the mother of all black laws in India. When the Act was legislated in 1958 to ‘combat’ insurgency there was only the Naga movement in the north-east. Over the last 57 years, the Act has been in force, it has only contributed to the rise of more and more insurgent outfits in the region.

The case of the missing socks

The world has a lot to do with ‘pairs’. There are living pairs and non-living pairs. Without the entity called ‘pair’, the world’s scenario would have been quite different. A pair of doves, a pair of pigeons, a pair of eagles, a pair of swans etc., are examples of living pairs. When it comes to humans, a couple is an example of a living pair – a man and a woman.
