The writer is neither Environmental Science student nor an expert but an activist who propagates for protection and promotion of environment in line to sustainability which becomes one of the biggest challenges of the world today. The project relies on the water resource of the said River which is originated from Shiroi Hills and other major tributary from Hoome that joined at Lamlang Gate village in Ukhrul district and flows through the Thoubal district via Mapithel valley before joining the Imphal River at Irong Ichil.

Mapithel dam conmmissioning plan: A stare on rationality

The Mapithel dam of Thoubal Multipurpose Project is one of the oldest and most controversial mega dam development projects of Manipur which has attained over three decades in the construction phase. The project proponent, Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) Govt. of Manipur repeatedly furnished various reasons behind non-completion of the Mapithel dam project in such a long years. Some of the reasons are true in the pragmatic field. However, it is undeniable fact that the affected indigenous communities have been relentlessly objecting the Mapithel dam project for undermining their rights and the same is encircled with various infirmities and multifaceted violations of procedures, rules & norms, laws and national & International guiding principles that virtually obstructed the smooth and speedy work of the dam construction. Besides this, lack of serious concern and sincere deal on the part of the project authority might be yet another major factor that hampered the construction works.

Introduction : Almost all the development interventions especially mega projects interweave dimensional devastation of forest and its resources. There is intrinsic relationship between Forest and indigenous people in terms of social & cultural and economic that sustains their survival throughout different stages of their life. Nature produces the grass we use to feed livestock, the food we eat, the water we drink, and also the medicine we need. It inspires our culture, our traditions, our science and almost all walks of life. This is why there has been incessant struggle of indigenous people for conservation of nature, preserving the balance of the ecosystem which has always been the indigenous way of life.
