My City, Clean City – A Collective Initiative for City Beautification

With a new venture to give our cities a green look and garbage free all the time, Manipur’s Thoubal Keithel and Kakching Keithel have been decorated with many hanging flower pots and installed portable waste disposal bins at several locations for collection of general waste and recyclable waste. It is also planned that the collected recyclable waste would be handed over to the private firms collecting recyclable materials and to the private recycling plants operating in Manipur.

A joint initiative on city beautification through community participation under the theme “My City, Clean City” taken up by European Manipuri Association (EMA), Korea Manipuri Association (KMA) in collaboration with The Great Thoubal (TGT), Green Revolution Society, Manipur, Thoubal Municipal Council, Kakching Municipal Council, Kakching Bazar Business Welfare Association, the city beautification campaign with installation of hanging flower pots and solid waste bins was held at Thoubal Keithel on July 20 and Kakching Keithel on July 22, 2013.

The idea of this mission My City, Clean City is inspired from the life experiences of the members of European Manipuri Association, London and Korea Manipuri Association, Suwon while living away from home in foreign countries. This initiative is also designed to work as a collective effort by involving local government units such as municipal councils and local NGOs in order to bring changes in the existing norms of that particular locality. Hence this initiative remains supplementary to the existing public and voluntary units operating locally and during such collaborative initiative process changes will be brought to the hearts and mind of local community and keeping one’s environment neat, clean and green become a moral responsibility for the people.

The main concept of this initiative is to get involve the larger community towards the effort of making a green and garbage free city which is a communal place. Earlier, European Manipuri Association initiated such campaign in the historic Khwairamband Ima Keithel, a unique market place run exclusively by woman and the only in the world. ‘Blooming Manipur Project’ was initiated as an experimental project but at the moment it is functioning as an autonomous body after the completion of the project timeline with EMA.

“My City, Clean City” is an initiative taken up collectively by the community of Thoubal and Kakching to make their communal places clean and beautiful. Moreover, it is to instil the spirit of community participation and civic pride for their towns, city and villages.

Regarding the city beautification drive, Okram Bishwajit, Chairperson of European Manipuri Association, in an exclusive interview with Manipur Times, said that the city beautification and cleaning campaign with installation of hanging flower pots of different varieties is a part of the strategy to bring a positive attitude to the mindset of the people of Manipur filled with the reminiscence of conflicts, violence and a society in turmoil. Moreover, it is a mission to save our environment, make the people healthy amidst a healthy environment.

“We, the international Manipuri diaspora, living in European and other developed countries, have experienced the comforts of developed countries. However, we can’t spend our life comfortably there while our people in Manipur are living amidst dust. We like our fellow Manipuris to enjoy the fruits of development. Manipuris living abroad always care for their home state right from human rights to infrastructural development and environment. City beautification program is part of our contribution we can extend to the people of this state”, said Bishwajit.

He said that European Manipuri Association, EMA which is eleven years old has about 62 active members at present. Bishwajit Elangbam , a senior member of EMA living in London first suggested the idea of installing hanging flower baskets in the historic Ima Keithel . After a formal project proposal and general consensus of majority of the members of EMA, the ‘Blooming Manipur Project’ was launched. The initial implementation was done through financial contributions from members and well wishers of EMA. So for the first time, Khwairamband Ima Keithel was adorned with hanging flower pots with the help of volunteers and ex EMA members living in Manipur with the approval and moral support of Imphal Municipality and concerned government departments. The experimental project was planned to run for one year by EMA. It’s been almost two years since its launch and since then the idea, concept and implementation has also evolved through adaptation to local needs.

To keep Thoubal keithel and Kakching keithel neat and clean by decorating it with beautiful hanging flower pots and systematic collection of waste particularly through community participation, European Manipuri Association tied up with Jiten Nongmaithem, Chairman of Korea Manipuri Association to initiate a city beautification program under the theme “My city, Clean City”. The financial, physical and moral contribution from all the members of EMA, KMA, NGOs , members of the local community and both the municipal councils of Thoubal and Kakching has helped in successful implementation of the initiative.

Nahakpam Bidhan, a member of Korea Manipuri Association told Manipur Times that market place is a common place thronged with all sections of the society to sell and buy various things. Making our cities and communal places green, neat and clean becomes quite essential. After all, the changes will bring a positive vibe to the people resulting in good health and a harmonious society. Almost all cities in Korea always look green, neat and clean. As a result of this, the market places look like a garden. The people there have the habit of using dustbins to dispose of wastes and littering is a taboo to them. It’s quite astonishing to see the market scene of Manipur. Almost every empty space is filled with garbage and foul smell of rotten things. People throw away their general refuse and solid waste materials improperly. It’s a disgrace for all of us to showcase our historic Ima Keithel and other markets of the state in its present scenario in the eyes of foreign tourists visiting the state. We need to imitate and see how the other developed countries are trying to keep their markets environment friendly.

He appealed the people to participate in this initiative by sharing their thoughts and by extending full co-operation.
“Inclusion of solid waste management education in school syllabus to bring awareness to the children is the need of the hour. To make a garbage free zone and bring a good environment, awareness on the part of our people is a must”, said Bidhan while assuring all possible help from the side of Korea Manipuri Association to make the state’s markets places always look green and garbage free.

With the theme “My City, Clean City”, the city beautification campaign held at Thoubal Keithel on July 20 last was organised by Thoubal Municipal Council in collaboration with the Great Thoubal, European Manipuri Association, Korea Manipuri Association and Green Revolution Society, Manipur.
T. Ranjit Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Thoubal, Y. Bijen Singh, Chairperson, Thoubal Municipal Council, N. Gitkumar, Director, MAHUD, Government of Manipur, Jugindro Akoijamba, Admin II, NE Region, The Great Thoubal, Okram Bishwajit, Chairperson, Eurppean Manipuri Association and Okram Kenedy Singh, Secretary, Green Revolution Society, Thoubal graced the function as Chief Guest, President, Guest of honours and special Guest respectively.
The campaign held at Kakching Keithel organised on July 22 was under the initiative of European Manipuri Association (EMA) London, Korea Manipuri Association (KMA), Suwon in association with Kakching Municipal Council, Kakching Bazar Business Welfare Association, Library and information Centre, Kakching and The Great Thoubal.

One day awareness campaign on the theme My City, Clean City was also held at the Auditorium of Library and information centre, Kakching to bring awareness to the people about the importance of safeguarding the environment and keeping the city neat and tidy. Kshetrimayum Subadani Devi, Chairperson, Kakching Municiapl Council, N. Shyamchandra, Secretary, The Great Thoubal, M. PRESS RELEASE: PROTEST AGAINST RAMBAN (J&K) KILLING AT JANTAR MANTAR

New Delhi July 21: On the appeal of Save Sharmila Campaign and Mission Bhartiyam, a protest was organised against the Ramban Massacre by BSF that claimed 6 lives and injured 44 others.

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign is a nation-wide campaign in support of Irom Sharmila and for the repeal of the draconian law of AFSPA. For two years, it has been working to spread awareness, mobilise support and generate political pressure to repeal the law. It is an umbrella of many civil society organisations. The protest was joined and supported by many progressive groups namely AISA, Campus Front of India, Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association, NCHRO, PUCL, J&K RTI and PUDR among several others.

The BSF had opened fired on a mob that was protesting against the alleged manhandling by BSF personnel of a local imam, followed by the reported desecration of the Holy Quran the previous night. The following morning, a group of protestors had reached a BSF post in Gool in Ramban district and they were responded with a massacre.

The organisers believe that this shameful and unacceptable incident called Ramban massacre is, however, not a sudden reaction to the protest.

“The Ramban incident is a prima facie case of coercive method adopted by the security personals.  It highlights the highhanded attitude of the security forces that they have acquired over a period time due to their absolute powers and the impunity granted to them”, said Ravi Nitesh, founder of Mission Bhartiyam.

“This protest is about this unacceptable massacre, it is to show our solidarity with the victims and demand justice but it has been organised to attack the root. We know that this incident is not the first incident in Kashmir. These inhuman incidents are quite frequent in Kashmir and in states of North East because draconian laws like AFSPA breed them. We are here today to appeal for humanity, to demand the repeal of AFSPA.” remarked Devika Mittal, core member of Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign.

The organizers believe that real justice for the victims of the massacre will be to attack the “root” cause i.e. militarization and draconian laws like AFSPA that has led to fake encounters, rape and killings of civilians.

“It is unfortunate that these incidents are happening in the World’s largest “democracy”. It is unfortunate that these killings are justified in the name of upholding the ‘integrity’ of the nation. We feel that development, basic civil rights, basic amenities and justice should be used to uphold the ‘integrity’ not torture.” said V Arun Kumar of AISA.

“There is a long list of incidents where security personals of almost all wings have violated the human rights in J&K.  There have been fake encounters, torture, rapes etc. in the state but nothing has been done to prosecute the culprits till now. So there is every reason to believe that like other similar incidents before, there will be no action taken by the government against security personals in Ramban massacre too. In such situation the only option left for the democratic forces to raise voice against such injustices”, said Mohammad Tanveer of Campus Front of India.

Asad Ashraf from Jamia Solidarity Students told that “unless and until there is demilitarization, the situation will not improve in J&K. We must know that dissatisfaction is a primary reason for increase in insurgent activities so it’s high time that we think about “their” welfare, not “ours”.

Kaashif who was here from Chhatra Vimarsh magazine, remarked that “How do we take pride in being the world’s largest “democracy” when democracy is not extended to all states within our own country.”

Manjit from PUDR remarked, “It is tragic that Kashmiris are looked upon as “anti-national”, as “anti-Indian”. It is true that there are anti-state slogans in Kashmir but this is because the only symbol of India i.e. the army has created hell in their land”.

The protest was supported by renowned Activists like Gautam Navlakha, Prashant Bhushan, Manisha Sethi and many others. Though they could not be present. they had The protest was joined in by many people from Kashmir and even from states of North-East.

Dr, Muzaffar Bhat of J&K chapter of RTI remarked, “This incident happened in Jammu which is seen to be more “peaceful”. So there cannot be any justification. It shows that the entire Kashmir is under attack.  ”

The organisations demands the repeal of AFSPA, it demands the de-militarisation of all civilian areas in the AFSPA-imposed states, to investigate all crimes committed under it, to prosecute the guilty persons, compensate the victims and just initiatives to improve the situation in J&K and in the states of North-East. They will be submitting a memorandum to the Prime Minister, to the Home Ministry and the Ministry of Defence.

APART FROM TOPPERS’ FELICITATION
Need for a mechanism to garner social support in effective educational reforms in Manipur

By Seram Neken Singh
July 9, 2013

As human beings take calories of food to build muscles and bones for the body, education serves as the food for the mind. It enables one to think good, to do good and make progress in life. Education enlightens the mind to differentiate between vice and virtue. Only educated men can lead the society to progress and civilization. When we do not educate our children, we are deconstructing our future.

Manipur society today witnesses all sorts of vices, among which disturbance in educational institutions is the most notorious. Planting of bombs and hurling of grenades in schools are no more bizarre incidents in the state. There were even reports of hurting school students in bomb attacks near educational institutions. Such incidents clearly show the complete lack of education among the perpetrators. It is said that Hitler did not close down educational institutions during the hectic world war period. Winston Churchill of Britain also followed suit by allowing schools and colleges to work normally during the war. They paid utmost care for the education sector, as education is essential for future growth of the human society.

Nowadays, most politicians do not prefer to invest in education sector, as its yields are not quickly visible. It takes years to educate a child. The society will taste the fruits of education after decades of venture. Local people will feel the benefits of constructing a market complex or a bridge or a road as soon as it is inaugurated. However, the outcome of education is naturally delayed as well as long lasting. During the past many years, ministers and administrators came and went away, having nothing to contribute to the reformation of irregularities in education sector. Hence, education in Manipur remained the most irregular and corrupt of all public sectors. Fortunately now, the present state government seems enlightened on the potentialities of education sector in shaping the society. Not a single day passes without one or the other news related to educational reforms. The concerned department has been trying hard to regularize the pending rough management in education sector. Something concrete has been done and many more are expected to be done. Here, the public support in various forms is a must to bring in educational reforms in the state. In the absence of public commitment, the government will be handicapped to reach the nook and corner of the state. The local people must act as the ears and eyes of the government in matters of monitoring educational institutions.

Although felicitation of toppers of various examinations has become a fashion nowadays, the involvement of local leaders and organizations in such events is worthy of appreciation. Many local clubs are organizing programmes to congratulate the excellent students belonging to their localities. Political leaders have come out active to distribute awards to the meritorious few hailing from their constituencies. Such felicitation of toppers surely encourages the few brilliant students and instills a competitive spirit among them. However, it will in no way benefit the large number of mediocre students, who need to be constantly motivated in order to fit in suitable careers. Neither the toppers are the only students who deserve to be encouraged nor are examinations the only criteria to judge the merit of students.

The local people, Panchayats and political leaders have often been indulging in felicitating toppers of their locality, as a mark of encouragement to brilliant students. Their interests and involvement in education sector clearly shows that they have the potential to participate actively in educational betterment of the locality. Besides felicitating toppers once in a year, the local clubs and political leaders need to focus on continued support to all the students of the locality or assembly constituency. The local people have a great role in effective implementation of educational programmes in their locality. Before any government department realizes, a local man naturally knows how many teachers come to school on time and how many students attain classes regularly. The local people always see who go to school and who do not. The flagship programmes like the right to education (RTE) can never be successful without the support of local people. The government needs to focus on the role of grassroots level institutions so as to effectively implement educational flagship programmes.

The Gram Sabha or local club is the best institution to assess the performance of educational institutions in villages. They may conduct a village level survey to identify the children who are out of school. Parents/guardians of such children may be motivated to send their wards to a nearby school. The benefits of education and the amenities provided to school going children from the government side may also be highlighted to the parents. Effective messages to encourage the parents to avail of the right to compulsory education of their children may be framed and disseminated. On the other hand, the village Panchayat or local club may also vigilantly monitor the working of schools in its jurisdiction. Every defaulting teacher may be reported to the respective controlling officer for prompt action. The grievances of the educational institutions may also be forwarded to the authority for timely fulfillment.  In such a way, the working of educational institutions may also be monitored. The local organizations and politicians who are very enthusiastic in felicitating topper students will surely shoulder the responsibility to ensure that every child of the locality is sent to school.

The government may very well use the services of local people for educational reforms through a well established public relations mechanism. An effective public relations mechanism will materialize the educational reforms. The educational set-up in Manipur is in dire need of an effective public relations mechanism. The services of local clubs, village Panchayats, Meira Paibee groups etc. may be mobilized to spread the messages of education in the nook and corner. The task of garnering the public support may be entrusted to a well-equipped Public Relations Cell under education department.

Some ethics to ponder in Conservation of Monuments and Sites
By Kshetrimayum Kamaljit Singh
Conservation Research Scholar, National Museum Institute, Janpath

It is no doubt that Manipur is one of the most diverse and rich in cultural heritage. The intangible heritage like dance (Rasleela, Thoibi dance, etc.), music (Nata Sankirtan), folklores and literatures (puya wari, cheitharol kumbaba), sports (Polo, Yubi Lakpi) and tangible heritage as in beautiful sites (Loktak, Dzuko valley, etc.), monuments (Kangla fort, Langthabal fort, etc.) and also in craftsmanship’s of textiles, cane and bamboo objects, etc.

And it is the duty of people to take care of these cultural heritage because it:
– Conveys diverse messages and values that contribute to give a meaning to people’s life.
– Represents the identity of our social group.
– Is unique and irreplaceable.
– Is a source of economic development.
– Represents a vehicle for understanding the diversity of people and developing a policy for peace and mutual comprehension.

Kangla

Kangla

Like the restoration works of Kangla fort and the recent finds of geometrical shapes in Maklang and other sites recognized by ASI- Kanchipur (1991-92), Kangkhui (1968-69), and Sekta (1994-95), these are all our important heritage that should be protected not by government authorities only but also by the local populations.

Now according to Conservation-Restoration ethics, there are some important points that should be considered, which the general populations should also be aware of it, like when the questions arise-

Should old buildings look old?
Or
Should they be restored to a condition where they look as if they could have been put up yesterday?

In the IInd International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments, Venice, 1964, as adopted by ICOMOS in 1965- “The concept of a historic monument embraces not only the single architectural work but also the urban or rural setting in which is found the evidence of a particular civilization, a significant development or a historic event. This applies not only to great works of art but also to more modest works of the past which have acquired cultural significance with the passing of time.” [Article 1]

Conservation – “The conservation of monuments is always facilitated by making use of them for some socially useful purpose. Such use is therefore desirable but it must not change the lay-out or decoration of the building. It is within these limits only that modifications demanded by a change of function should be envisaged and may be permitted.” [Article 5]

“The conservation of a monument implies preserving a setting which is not out of scale. Wherever the traditional setting exists, it must be kept. No new construction, demolition or modification which would alter the relations of mass and colour must be allowed.” [Article 6]

Restoration – “The process of restoration is a highly specialized operation. Its aim is to preserve and reveal the aesthetic and historic value of the monument and is based on respect for original material and authentic documents. It must stop at the point where conjecture begins, and in this case moreover any extra work which is indispensable must be distinct from the architectural composition and must bear a contemporary stamp. The restoration in any case must be preceded and followed by an archaeological and historical study of the monument.” [Article 9]

“Additions cannot be allowed except in so far as they do not detract from the interesting parts of the building, its traditional setting, the balance of its composition and its relation with its surroundings.” [Article 13]

So we should know the values and importance of our cultural heritage that has been passed down through ages, we should respect, protect and preserved them before it’s too late and we lost our historical identities. Public should also take part and collaborate with the government or local authorities discussing how to protect and preserved them for the future generations. As it is also our duty and not for the government authorities only, public should know that their role in protecting the heritage is as much important as any government bodies.

SANA KONUNG IMBROGLIO
Is the Kangla adequately renovated and preserved?

By Seram Neken Singh

Had the King been consulted, the government decision would have been lauded by all. Only a cordial rendezvous between the democratically elected government and the titular king of Manipur will solve the Sana Konung imbroglio. Only when the chief minister of the state and the king of Manipur open-heartedly discuss the situation, the meaningful decision for the posterity of Manipur will be made.

Since the abolition of ‘Privy Purse’ in 1971, succeeding kings of Manipur might have faced lots of hardships to maintain their status as the customary head of the land. The Manipur kings after merger to Indian Union were not so influential in political spheres as those of Hyderabad. In the meantime, former kings allowed large portions of its land to be occupied by private parties as residential buildings. Subsequent governments of the state during the past forty years have not shown any interest in sustaining the status of the King and the Royal Palace. Now the state government has come out with the decision to take-over the Sana Konung and evict the places around it for renovating it. The argument of the government is that the royal palace has lost its traditional character with huge private occupations. In the backdrop of such a decision, what will be the fate of our customary institutions – Sana Konung and the King of Manipur ?

Sana Konung is the symbol of age-old civilization and unity among different communities of Manipur. Recent reaction of 227 Tangkhul village chiefs of Ukhrul against the cabinet decision for take-over of the Sana Konung is the reflection of age-old ties among various communities of Manipur. Barring communal differences, the people as a whole stand to protect its king as a symbolic head. Such move is laudable from all circles.

The people of the state always want its royal palace to be preserved and kept intact for thousands of years to come, as it is the symbol of Manipur history and tradition. Sana Konung is the living example of Manipur being an independent kingdom before it was merged to the Indian Union in 1949. Today Sana Konung has become an institution for preserving the tradition, culture and history of this land. The decision of the state cabinet to take-over the royal palace for developing it into a heritage site and tourist spot has sparked protests, as its rightful owner the King of Manipur was not consulted. As per an agreement of 2006, every decision on the Sana Konung should be taken with the consent of the King. The Merger Agreement also mentions that the private property of the King should be made distinct from the public property. However, the government has unfortunately not taken the consent of the titular king in taking its verdict.

The objective appears to be good, however the manner in which the decision was taken is wrong. Moreover, the plan for palace renewal needs to be chalked out taking into account the importance of the customary head of the land. The king has a big say in the renovation of the palace. Moreover, it is not certain that the mere take-over by state government will fulfill the aspirations of the people of Manipur. There are hundreds of instances where the state government could not successfully implement beautiful projects and programmes related to preserving heritage sites. Even the traditional structures in the Kangla have not been fully renovated till date. The people of the state naturally feel doubt whether the state government would successfully evict the areas where huge buildings have cropped up. What will be the status of the existing king of Manipur, whose residence so called ‘Chonga Bon’ would be taken over by state government ? People are again cynical that the role of the king as customary head of Manipur may shrink day by day with the infringement of state government on his property.

The abolition of “privy purse” as per 26th constitution amendment is a main cause for minimizing the importance of king and its institutions. To enable the king to perform and preserve the custom and tradition of Manipur, and also to maintain his family, the government must create a “royal purse” out of state fund. State budget allocation must be made for the maintenance of the King, his family and the palace.

Almost all countries in the world have its symbolic structure to reflect its history. For Manipur, ‘Kangla’ is the sacred place symbolizing the existence of an independent 2000 year-old civilization of Manipur. Historically, traditionally, culturally and aesthetically, ‘Kangla’ is the real place which deserves to be preserved for the posterity of Manipur. As compared to Kangla, present Sana Konung is a recent structure erected only during Churachand Maharaja. There are also other palaces in Bishnupur, Langthabal, Kanglatongbi, Maklang etc. which have great historical values. It is better for the government to complete the renovation and preservation of Kangla upto the mark, before taking over the Sana Konung for another venture.

For Immediate Release:
7 July 2013, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

In what can be termed as one of the most shocking incident, where Gogon Naorem, a native of Tentha Khongbal Leikai, Manipur, presently working and residing in Hyderabad was mercilessly knocked down by a speeding car on 1st July, 2013 as he and a friend crosses the road in Banjara Hills, one of the upmarket commercial and residential hub. In this inhuman act, the driver of the car did not stop to look back but sped away leaving Gogon seriously injured. His friend escaped with minor injuries.

Press Release and Request for Support – HYMS – Gogon Naorem

He was rushed by bystanders to the nearest hospitals but since he didn’t have a support system or an insurance policy, he was forced to re-admit at a “cheaper hospital” in Secunderabad.

His condition remains critical and has been in Intensive Care Unit since the day he was admitted. The doctors at the hospital have kept him under observation. He underwent severe trauma with massive internal haemorrhage on the right side of the brain. According to the doctors, he has fractured the skull at three different places and a surgery may be required at some point. He hasn’t regained consciousness since the accident.

Over the past week, Hyderabad Manipuri Society (HYMS) and many well-wishers have been visiting the hospital and extended all possible assistance. But the prolonged stay at the hospital has increasingly burdened the family back in Manipur. Gogon’s mother is a small time fish vendor while his father, in poor health, teaches a few students. The inability to support their son at this current juncture has severely impacted them.

Three days ago, HYMS, initiated a fund drive to support Gogon and the response has been tremendous. Various people from across different location contributed generously and the first instalment was handed over to Rakesh Naorem, Gogon’s uncle, who travelled to Hyderabad to be with Gogon. The sad part, though is, the money collected is just enough to cover the hospital expenses for three days. Therefore, HYMS, will continue the fund drive so that it can extend its support to Gogon.

It is our humble request to all of you who is reading this message, please think and extend your support for Gogon.

We sincerely thank you to the many individuals who have contributed to the first round. Please don’t stop just yet; Gogon is not out of the woods yet.

Thank you and we look forward to your prayers and support. Let’s join hands.

Please contact HYMS via the following channels if you would like to contribute to help Gogon:

I am deeply pained to hear the death of legendary martial artist of 60s, Mr Jim Kelly, who starred with another legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee, in the eternal 1973 Hollywood block buster martial arts action film – “ENTER THE DRAGON.”

James Milton “Jim” “the Dragon” Kelly born on May 5, 1946 in Millersburg, Kentucky was an American athlete, actor and martial artist who rose to fame in the early 1970s. He was best known for his performance as Williams in the 1973 film “ENTER THE DRAGON” that shook the world by storm.
Kelly studied Shorin-ryu Karate and Okinawa Karate. Parker Shelton and Gordon Doversola were among others under whose guidances he studied Karate.

Oken Jeet Sandham pays “Tribute to Jim Kell?y, starrer of the etern?al martial arts act?ion movie – “Enter The D?ragon”

During the early 1970′s, Jim Kelly became one of the most decorated world karate champions in the sport. In 1971, Kelly won four prestigious championships that same year, most notably, the World Middleweight Karate title at the 1971 Long Beach International Karate Championships.
“ENTER THE DRAGON” was his second film and first starring with Bruce Lee. He was so impressed and thrilled in working with Bruce Lee in the “ENTER THE DRAGON.” He said, “’Bruce was just incredible, absolutely fantastic. I learned so much from working with him. I probably enjoyed working with Bruce more than anyone else I’d ever worked with in movies because we were both martial artists. And he was a great, great martial artist. It was very good.”

Kelly died of cancer on June 29, 2013.

The death of this iconic and legendary martial artist has brought a void in the world of martial arts and that will be difficult to fill in years to come.

I, on behalf of the Muaythai Federation of India (MFI) and my own behalf, conveyed the profound condolence to the bereaved family members of this Legend.
RIP.

Dr.Ngangbam Shantikumar Meetei goes for Mr. World: for Manipur

Hello everyone! My name is Dr. Ngangbam Shantikumar Meetei, Senior Mr. Asia No. 1. Some of you might have heard about me and some of you haven’t yet. I have settled in Taipei, Taiwan as a Taiwanese citizen and been working as an English Professor for the last sixteen years. Besides my full time job, taking care of four kids I have competed and won many Taiwan nationals, East Asian (competed 3 times) and Asian Championships (competed six times). Not only these, I have also competed two times in Asian Games and six times in Mr. Universe.

Unfortunately, except the Mr. Sub Junior Manipur and Imphal West where I got first and second placings respectively, all the other championships I competed for JNU, Delhi, or Taiwan. Every time I won I was happy, excited and proud of myself. But deep inside my heart I was not really happy. Every time I won a contest I always asked this question in my heart, “Nahakkipoknapham, lairajarabi, wajarabi, kappatanamapunsikemlaba, mitlupirangkangbakhangjadraba, neihatpirabaEemaKangleipakkidikadai?” This question always tormented my heart. I have been thinking how I can compete, at least once for my home land Kangleipak, Manipur. I like to pay back something in my own capacity. But I never got the chance as I was always in Taiwan team. But this time I took the courage to be away from Taiwan Bodybuilding Federation and not to compete in the IFBB. And I am also free from Indian Federations. I have nothing to do with the Indian federations (2 Federations now). Instead, I chose to sponsor myself all the expenditure and compete for my long cherished dream – to compete for my beloved Mother, Kangleipak. I am ready to face any consequences I may face from Indian or Taiwan Federations. I also know, I will get nothing from the Government of Manipur or India, or Taiwan. It’s okay. I don’t expect either. As long as I can go for my long cherished dream, to go for my homeland Kangleipak and show to the whole world, that there is one tiny place called Manipur, whose people could defeat the Mainland Indians as well as the whole world in many fields, especially in sports, it is worth doing. I love my homeland, Kangleipak, Manipur.

The reason for choosing to compete in the INBA’s Mr. World in Greece is that this is the right one for a natural bodybuilder like me. I belong here, and I wish many aspiring young bodybuilders from my homeland, Manipur as well as from Taiwan follow me in their venture to the top. I like them to see their bright future, as champions, not as sick bodybuilders who look big and strong but sick inside and disappear in a few years. For me bodybuilding is not just a sport to win some titles but it is part of my healthy and happy lifestyle. Of course, I love to compete, challenge and win to improve myself, and show I am somebody. But I don’t believe in winning, sacrificing my own health, my life and my family. That is why I love to compete in the INBA’s natural competitions. This is what I did before, and I will follow the same.

I have been training as best as I could for the last one year or so and have few days to go for the coming Mr. World Championship which will be held at Zakynthos, Greece from 5th to 7th July, 2013. I am not sure what position is stored for me in the championship. I may win with all your prayer and support, or may not. Winning and losing is part of the game. But I am already very happy and excited to represent my homeland, Kangleipak. I feel really proud to be the son of Manipur.

We at the Blooming Manipur would like to share our sincere appreciation to the many who are following our activities in general and extending their precious moral support in particular. We believe that social transformation of our landscapes into beautiful places of pride and to imbibe the vital sense of belongingness can be one the important basis of developing Manipur. The formation of Blooming Moirang and the role it had played in involving the local community and planting beautiful flowers and trees at the historic Thoibi Awun Keithel is a progressive step that can generate an encouraging trend across the state. We are glad to hear that progressive sections of Thoubal, Kakching and Kangpokpi had expressed an interest to initiate similar activism and transform their respective Keithels into beautiful markets.

Press release: Blooming Manipur

Today Blooming Manipur activists are proud to have played a role for our ‘Ima Keithel’ to bloom with many beautiful flowers and our indigenous Urung Trees. We are grateful to the role played by the Chairperson of Imphal Municipality Council and the individual role of Ima Hajarimayum Radharani who took care of the blooming flowers next to her potpham. We are hopeful that the recent minimum achievement in making Ima Keithel a poster free area would have had some impact on creating an awareness and lead to many more initiatives in making the Keithel, a litter / garbage free area in the days to come.
We wish to share our request to the Imphal Municipality and responsible authorities, the kind public and hardworking womenfolk of the Keithel to bring about the much needed transformation that this historic market richly deserved and help set an amazing trend across our land.
