CONDEMN ASSAULT AND MURDER OF Ms A S REINGHAMPHI FROM NORTHEAST IN INDIA’s CAPITAL DELHI

CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL AND PROTEST AT JANTAR MANTAR, THURSDAY 6 JUNE 6:30 PM

New Delhi, 5 June 2013: On 29th of May 2013, Ms A.S. Reingamphi alias A.S. Solam from Ukhrul district of Manipur was found dead under suspicious circumstances in her rented accommodation, House no. 424/B , Ground Floor, Chirag Delhi, New Delhi -110017 under Malviya Nagar Police Station in India’s capital Delhi. There were signs of brutal mutilation on her nose ,face and her legs .Her eyelids were scratched, eyes were bleeding and there was a pool of blood where she was found lying.

Reingamphi Awungshi

Reingamphi Awungshi

POLICE REFUSES TO FILE AN FIR

The deceased’s relatives submitted a complaint letter to the SHO, Malviya Nagar Police Station on 29th May 2013. They charged the landlord and his brother-in-law of sexually assaulting and murdering Ms Reingamphi. They informed the police that the brother-in-law of the landlord was stalking and harassing Ms Reingamphi and specifically over this weekend , 25-26th May, the landlord called her repeatedly. The SHO of the Police Station Malviya Nagar refused to file an FIR.

REFUSAL TO FILE FIR AS PER THE COMPLAINANT’S REQUEST

After 3 days of sustained pressure on 31 May, the Malviya Nagar Police finally lodged an FIR under Section 306, which is abetment to suicide. This is in complete disregard of the preliminary post-mortem report, which does not mention the cause of her death and against the wishes of the family.

On 1 June 2013 the Minister for Women and Child Development Dr Kiran Walia, arrived at the Malviya Nagar Police Station, where protests went on and intervened, saying that the case will be transferred to the Crime Branch and asked for a fresh post-mortem investigation.

THREATS FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

A humble candle light vigil was organized near the house of the deceased in Chirag Dilli on 1st June, 2013.At the site of the vigil , the locals threatened the participants that if any of the local boys were investigated/picked up by the police then those from the North East living in that area would face consequences.

OUR DEMANDS

We, the civil society and women’s groups from all over Northeast region , Delhi and India condemn the killing of Ms A.S. Reingamphi alias A.S. Solam and call upon Govt of Delhi, Govt of India to ensure justice is done. We have been protesting over last several days to ensure justice is done and will continue our struggle to ensure peace to family of late Ms A.S. Reingamphi.
The present FIR done unilaterally by Malviya Nagar Police Station Delhi without taking into consideration the complainants’ letter be retracted and a fresh FIR be filed alleging sections 302(Murder) and 304(Culpable Homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Malviya Nagar Police Station had filed FIR under IPC Section 306 ( abetment to suicide ) which has been rejected by family members.
Serious attention must be paid to the discrepancies between the first and the second Post Mortem reports.
The suspects– the landlord and his brother-in-law– should be arrested and thoroughly questioned.
All the institutions involved speed up the process of investigation and justice be delivered. In this regard, the viscera report should come out as soon as possible.
Action to be taken against the Police officials of the Malviya Nagar Police Station for refusing to file an FIR which is the right of all the citizens.
Action to be taken against the residents of Chirag Dilli who said on 1st June 2013 at a candle light vigil held in memory of the deceased that if any of their men were investigated, they will take ‘action’ and thus threatened the relatives and supporters of the deceased and people of Northeast
Request Crime Branch Delhi to look into “pamphlet” circulated in hindi by Chirag Dilli men folk regarding the death and threats given to friends of the deceased on 3 June 2013 and ensure all protection be given to them.
Ensure the safety, security of all the people from North Eastern who are living, working and studying in Delhi be treated equally without any discrimination and ensure justice is done.

IMPHAL, June 4: The 38 hour general strike called by the All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur as the first phase agitation concluded today.

However in between, the student body has informed IFP that it will initiate its second phase of agitation immediately.

Speaking to IFP, All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur spokesperson Majabung Gangmei informed that the second phase of the Union`s agitation will be initiated immediately after its 38 hour agitation imposed in the tribal inhabited areas of the state from 5 am yesterday concludes.

A deserted road in CCPur during the ATSUM bandh.

As soon as the the 38 hour general strike concluded today, a 38-day sustained agitation which is the union’s second phase agitation has been imposed in all the tribal inhabited areas of the state.

Meanwhile, ATSUM condemns in the strongest way the incident wherein personnel of Assam Rifles and Sekmai police station detained and beat up the disabled tribal people saying that they were agitation supporters, he said.

Consequently, an indefinite ban on national projects being taken up in tribal inhabited areas including railway projects will be imposed with immediate effect. The agitation to ban national projects is said to be the third phase of the agitation of ATSUM.

Our CCPur Correspondent adds: CRPC 144 has been imposed in certain parts of Churachandpur district following certain disruptions during the general strike.

The bandh called by All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur saw a mixed response today at Ccpur proper with areas from Tuibuang upto Lamka side of the town witnessing total bandh, while the other side of Tuibuang saw the public not responding to the bandh call with the Kuki Students Organization not in agreement with the imposition of bandh called by the tribal students’ union.

It may be recalled that ATSUM is disowned by certain Kuki and Hmar student groups.

Late this afternoon along the Rengkai road, police resorted to blank firing to control bandh volunteers while trying to impose the bandh at Rankai area of Lamka.

A local who identified himself as Goulian told IFP that the bandh is a failure at Rankai just outside of the area where the blank firing incident happened.

He however said that the bandh supporters had accosted him when he tried to enter the area.

Another local Lalpi of Upper Lamka told IFP that people must fight to control outsiders from over populating the state and at the same time unity must prevail to the Manipuri people who are affected by the access of the army which constantly made news, be it on harassment of the common people or even the top leaders of the state.

The band affected the main market of CCpur today.

PRESS RELEASE
Dated Tahamzam, 27th May, 2013

The final leg of the political tour of the UNC in Naga areas was undertaken in Tahamzam(Senapati) district in association with the Naga Peoples’ Organisation and the 5 constituent tribes councils of the region from the 27th to 29th April, 2013. The areas covered in the tour included Senapati District Headquarters, Mao Gate, Tadubi, Tunggam, Tungjoy, Liyai, Maram and Willong. As in the earlier legs of the tour in which Chandel, Ukhrul and Tamenglong district were covered, an on the field study of the socio-economic conditions of the Nagas which is weakening by the day was undertaken and verification made on the tall claims made by the Government of Manipur on schemes/projects submitted in the tripartite talk as development initiatives taken up by them in tribal areas.

The tour programme concluded with a joint meeting with frontal organisations including the Naga People’s Organisation, The Senapati District Women’s Association, Senapati District Students’ Association, Senapati- Karong Town Committee, the Tribe Councils of the Region and social leaders. The contours of the tripartite talk process on the demand for an alternative arrangement outside the Government of Manipur was highlighted in the joint meeting which also emphasised on the need to be organised and be in continued preparedness for taking forward the people’s movement to its logical conclusion.

District Sports Complex at Karong with cost of Rs 15 crores and all 15 crores released. Reported as ongoing.

District Sports Complex at Karong with cost of Rs 15 crores and all 15 crores released. Reported as ongoing.

The joint meeting reiterated the condemnation on the inhuman manner in which eviction of the bona fide residents of Naga River Colony was carried out by the Government of Manipur on the pretext of construction of a 5 star hotel. The eviction of 28 houses left more than 100 school going children homeless and 3 churches mowed down. The eviction was systematically carried out by first coming out with non-existent fault finding on land “patta”, then issuing back dated eviction orders which did not allow the resident to salvage whatever is possible from their houses and the meeting termed it as a clear move to grab the legitimate homestead of tribals and place of worship of Christians. Even standing court ruling of maintaining status quo was not honoured. 5 Stars hotels are not supposed to disown people of their homes. The meeting maintained that Government of Manipur’s communal agenda for the eviction, veiled behind the 5 stars hotel project was reflective of their wider design to disown tribals and Christian of their lands and emphasised on the dire need to take up suitable course of actions to protect tribal rights.

The entire tour programme was hosted by the Naga People’s Organisation.

To,

The Chairperson

National Human Rights Commission

Faridkot House

New Delhi 110001

Subject: Request to act in the cases of human rights’ violation in North-East and Jammu & Kashmir

Respected Sir,

With due respect, we request you to kindly consider this as a letter from one human being to another. This is about a situation that NHRC is well-aware of. We know that hundreds of letters, appeals and requests have been sent to NHRC. As members of Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign, we have met you twice regarding this issue. Sir, the issue remains the same – to save the life of people of North east and Jammu & Kashmir from the demon named AFSPA or Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

It is a fact that the world has acknowledged the struggle of eche Irom Sharmila. They salute her for her sustained faith in the democratic and non-violent way of struggle. She has been considered for the Noble Peace Prize. It is also a fact that UN has also questioned India on the validity of this law. The UN had recognised the horrendous lives that the AFSPA has granted to the unfortunate people of these states. The Government-appointed Jeevan Reddy committee had also demanded the repeal of the law. These are all facts. But these are not the grounds on which we appeal to you.

We appeal to you on a humanitarian basis. Sir, we are not from these states. But this cause does move us, for the reason that we are human beings. It is unimaginable and unacceptable to us the horror in which people of these states live. Every day is a struggle for them to save their life and honour. Sir, you know about the horrendous incidents of the Malom massacre where 11 innocent people including a 60 year old lady and a recipient of the Child Bravery award had died, the Kunan Poshpora incident of Kashmir wherein about 100 women were raped by army men, the Shopian case, the case of Manorama Devi but these are only few cases. There are everyday stories of torture. Everyday is a struggle to escape from the clutches of the army men. The landscape in these states is mapped by army check-points and camps which are impossible to pass without being interrogated. In Kashmir, failing to show the identity card can mean torture, rape or killing. But this does not mean that the house is a safe place. Any moment, the army men can come and raid the house. According to news reports and research reports (enclosed), during the search operations, there have been many reported and unreported cases of sexual assault and rape. The night is most dreadful as the armymen begin their search. In the name of searching for “millitants”, all they do is to raid into villages, break-open doors of any random house and identify the male in the house as a “suspect”. The widows of these “suspects” is also not able to get any state benefit meant for widows because their deceased husband are regarded as militants. We have enclosed several stories. According to a report entitled ‘Manipur: Memorandum on Extrajudicial Summary or Arbitrary Executions’ submitted by the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights in Manipur and the UN to the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Summary or Arbitrary Executions reported that 1528 people, including 31 women and 98 children were killed in fake encounters by security forces in Manipur between 1979 and May, 2012.

Sir, you had said that this is the issue of Government and the Government has to take action but Sir, they are clearly not bothered. The report of the Jeevan Reddy Committee had gone to the Government. The State Governments obviously know the situation but still no-one is ready to do anything. So then what? Where do the common people go? Isin’t it the responsibility of NHRC to protect their rights? It is a matter of right to life. Why can’t NHRC do anything? NHRC is an autonomous body. If even NHRC will not take any action, where will the people go? It is not acceptable that a certain section of the population should suffer to save the “integrity” of the nation. And which integrity, Sir? And more importantly, at what cost? The people who are suffering every day, are their lives not precious? are they not human beings? What is their fault? What was the fault of those 11 civilians who were shot dead only because the Assam rifles could not shoot down the militants? Their fault was that they were not privileged like you and me and were born in these states. This was their only fault. Sir, is it acceptable?

We are proud to say that our politics has so many women politicians. We are proud to dub it as “women empowerment” but what about the rapists in army uniform who rape our sisters in Kashmir and North East India. What about Asiya, Nilofar, Manorama Devi and thousands of women who have been raped. What about Irom Sharmila? For 12 years, the lady has been on a hunger-strike and no-one cares. She is accused of committing suicide but is that the case? The lady was not even a direct victim of AFSPA but she has sacrificed her life to repeal the cause because she has seen the horrors. Aren’t you sympathetic towards her? She could have got married, have kids, would have migrated to Delhi or to some other place but she did not do that. She is under house arrest in a hospital. Today, she can’t even talk properly. When she came to Delhi, even though we had only seen her in the photographs, we were traumatized to see her condition. Today, the lady can’t even walk. She has become so weak, yet she has not lost hope. Sir, we feel helpless as we write this letter because there is really nothing that we could do for her and for these people who are suffering only because they had a hard luck of being born in these states. They are no different from me or from anyone else in this country, then why do they have to suffer? A kashmiri youth had said that, “While you people grew up playing, we grew up seeing guns.” He also said that in Kashmir, there is an increasing no. of blind youths as the army men fire pellets into their eyes if they protest against any extra-judicial killing, murder or rape.

Is this inhumanity acceptable? Should we turn blind to their sufferings? Should we turn deaf to the screams and wails of mothers, widows and children? What about our own conscience?

As about the law, is this the way to “integrate” the nation? By torturing innocent people, destroying their lives, rendering them unemployed, how are we integrating the nation? As about the militants, is this the way to deal? The Government should open talks with them, instead of punishing the innocent people for the crimes of the militants. Torturing innocent people, depriving them of basic rights, underdevelopment are also causes that do encourage people to take up arms. The Government should think of “integration” in more positive and humane ways. NHRC must break its silence and speak out.

Sir, we request you to kindly respond and act strictly and immediately on this issue. Please take action through the following ways:

*Send a fact-finding team to all AFSPA-imposed states to investigate into the cases of violence and the affected everyday life of the people.

*The report of the team should be analysed and a document on the validity of the law on account of the human rights’ violation should be made. NHRC can atleast suggest on the basis of evidence.

*The report should be sent to the Government, to the judiciary and other authorities and demand an action. It is not about a law, it is about the lives of thousands of human beings.

Sir, we request you to please intervene to save the life and honour of the people of North East and Jammu & Kashmir. If NHRC will not take action, where will the people go? Please save their lives from this draconian law. Laws can’t be bigger than people.

Hoping for a positive and immediate response.

Thanking You

Regards,

Ravi Nitesh and Devika Mittal

Volunteers of Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign

Canaan Caravan debut album by Obed Zeme

Imphal, 25th May 2013:  An experimental guitar instrumental album called ‘Canaan Caravan’, that crosses different genres from ballad rock to jazzy blues feel, has been released today in the north east. ‘Canaan Caravan’ is the debut album of Obed Zeme who romances with different shades of moods with his guitar. Obed Zeme is from Magulong Village, of Tamei Subdivison of Tamenglong District Manipur, and he is presently based in Delhi.  He is a guitar player, composer, arranger, producer, and a teacher.  His journey in music began at a tender age of eight, when he started playing piano and guitar. The album will be released in Delhi also very soon.

The album ‘Canaan Caravan’ is a tale of life’s journey that began in faith.  It is the guitarist’s rendition of the biblical caravan in the wilderness towards the Promised Land, Canaan. The titles of the tracks analogize significant landmarks in his spiritual passage. He is led by the peaceful Still Waters, but has to also endure the Arrows by Night. There are times when he envies the life on the Other Side of the River and tested his commitment, but deep down there’s a calm assurance that tells him that It is well with his soul.  He longs for Shakina Glory at all times, be it while he sings the Zion Song in adoration of the divine or while creating Origami in leisure.  And it is music, he says, that sustains faith as he continues to travel amidst the curse of Pandora’s Box.

Canaan Caravan-back

Canaan Caravan is not one season’s collection of the artist, rather, was written and compiled over a decade mostly in the early 2000s. True to Obed’s belief the album seeks to connect with the Higher power through music. Along with the larger vision for Peace reflected in his signature track A Cry for Peace, it also includes favorites like Rib of My Frame and Amazing Grace.

“THE SCREENING OF THAJAGI MAIIHING IN BANGALORE”

“Thajagi Maihing” the title itself shows some glimpse of the film’s meaning. What is the point of being beautiful like a full moon when it has the sear which can never be erased? But who would have thought that the story line will be so powerful and something which is very important and undoubtedly one of the most burning issues among the present young generation. Romi Meitei proved it many times that a film is just not to entertain. The audience expects something meaningful; something that conveys a massage and lesion rather than the usual romance between the hero and heroine. And ones again, Romi Meitei has confirmed it that he is the director with talent.

THE SCREENING OF THAJAGI MAIIHING IN BANGALORE

THE SCREENING OF THAJAGI MAIIHING IN BANGALORE

Thajagi Maihing had a screening at Secretary Club in Cubbon Park, Bangalore on 19th May 2013 organized by Bangalorians Manipuris. It was not a very big gathering but, enough to prove that the Manipuris here love their Manipuri films. The director said, ‘I am very pleased to see my brothers and sisters from Manipur who are dwelling here for education and other purposes. This gathering shows their love towards Manipuri film industry.’ He further said, ‘even though Manipuri film industry is rapidly developing, it is still a poor industry. Lack of investment limits and disturbs in producing a fine film.

The screening was started at around 6pm. To be honest there was nothing new in the beginning of the story. A guy and a girl in love, studying far from Manipur, talking quite often on mobile, coming home, meeting often etc., but the real story of the film starts from next scene, the scene which is very common but still spreading in our society like a disease. Visiting restaurants in our society is consider as something very immoral……………..but why? Why is it considered a forbidden place especially for the youth? The reason is very simple. The owners as well as the customers used these places in a totally different way; the owners to earn money maintain small dark cubicles and the customers too take advantage of these places. The question is ‘do we need such places to meet our loved ones’. The answer is very clear but still mysterious which everybody tries to avoid. I am not saying that such type of scenes had not been mentioned in other film, but Romi elaborates the consequences of this addiction of youngsters.

Thaja (Bala) and Thanil (?) meet in restaurant named “Manja Restaurant” and end up making love. Thanil video tapes their intimate moments which Thaja requests to delete it, as it may be seen by others. But, Thanil avoids it saying that it will never happen. After a few days, Thanil meets with an accident and dies and his mobile is pickup by Lakpa (Bony). The MMS is seen by Lakpa. Thaja is now married to IAS officer Pari (Gokul), a qualified, rich and handsome man who loves her dearly. Most of us think that why only IAS or MPSC. I cannot justify for other movies but her Pari’s being IAS officer does surely have a strong fall down as Shakespeare used to write the tragedy of king, prince nobles etc. to craft in reader’s heart a strong cave in. What else would a woman want?

But unfortunately, it does not last long. Her past reappears in front of her like a shadow in form of Lakpa which not only haunts her but also shatters her innocent husband’s life. Can be imagine what will be the fate of such women who have become victims in the hands of society? That is really scary. Now what will Thaja’s decision be??? The film also gives us a message that men are the greatest enemy of women folk in the present moment. The number of issues of rape, molest, murder, betrayal etc. are increasing day by day. And to extent women are responsible for their fate. Mobile phone relationship, having physical relationship before knowing him completely, fulfilling his demands because he is showering you with precious gives, visiting those dark restaurant cabins…………………… what is the need for all these? Now, are we going to blame only the men folks? Women are innocent that they do not know anything, they are ignorant, and now can we be sure of their innocence? Hemabati’s (thanil’s mother) words to Linthoi (Soma, the journalist) are in fact the truth. Is it the fault of the man only if the woman does not bother to collect information about the man whom she wants to get to get married and later meets with unwanted events? Man who advantage of woman in the dark room of restaurants would not have tied them up dragged them in. if they do not want those things than how could the men dare to do anything with her? So, the point is women are not 100% innocent. They too have howlers.
The characters in the film have justified their roles. The young actors and actresses seem to be promising. Bala as usual looks beautiful and what to say further on Gokul and Hemabati. Bony’s role was small but enough to shatter a family into pieces. And Guna as usual “Pakchabada Loirehe”….lol…

Finally, best regards to Romi Meitei for presenting a good film which is indeed a means to open our eyes. Wish him the best in his career and hope to see such type of more movies in future. A must watch film to avoid and take care ourselves being the victims of society.

In a simple but meaningful function to honor those sixteen student illustrators of the school held here at SHSS on Thursday, SHSS Principal Kechanguno Ajen lauded the students for their excellent illustrations that got published in a book form under the name “Tale of the Tribes – Folklore from Nagaland” recently. She also thanked the Delhi based Publisher, INTACH for publishing the illustrations of their students that would not only give interesting and thoughtful rich folktales of Nagaland to other people of India but also other parts of the world.

She also thanked Jamir for his successful guidance to their students during their “Workshop on Illustrations” and explained that because of his experienced guidance during the workshop, their students could produce such wonderful “results.”

Almost after 2 years of arduous research and paper work, team ‘My Japanese Niece’ (MJN) is all set for light, camera and action. Probably for the first time in Manipur, we are undergoing mock shooting, director of the upcoming war documentary movie, Mohen Naorem informed in a candid interview with entertainment reporter of www.kanglaonline.com.

Here is an excerpt of the interview with the director along with Junichi Kajioka, the main protagonist of MJN……..

KO: How are you preparing for your role?

Junichi: Most of the Japanese soldiers died because of hunger not because of malaria, cholera or any other epidemic diseases. I’m playing 25 to late 40s in the film and when I look like a hunger starved Japanese soldier I will be in my late 40s. Dieting is on and at the same time hectic practices ahead to portray the same youth to be seen as an old man.

KO: Something about the Budget

Mohen: Earlier, while we were scripting the first script, without any war scene it was estimated around 1-2 crore but it has multiplied only to bringing an actual war background. The realistic aspects of the film could do only with locations, costumes and properties like tank, explosions, sophisticated weapons, helicopter, antic, gigantic stage etc….. and here comes the need to hike the budget.

KO: How would you incur the budget from the present Manipuri film market?

Mohen: No, no its an international venture, already talked with Japanese ambassador for tie up and it aims at international markets; there are plenty of it. Interestingly, the Ambassador was touched with the story line that he assured to make use of the movie for promotion of peace around the globe.

KO: Comparatively, it’s a small budget with other international ventures; what do you really expect from MJN?

Junichi: I don’t think about budget; I don’t decide the film to involve depend on its budget. MJN is special and a meaningful project- without doubt it would strengthen the bonding between Japan and Manipur. It has a good subject matter and it’s very rare to find such film; we cannot see such project anywhere, it does not matter how much he (Mohen) pays for me.
Most of the war film is based on “who killed and who rose,” but this film is something that would message across to the world about peace and “help even in the war front to save lives”.

Mohen: Luckily, there would not any draught for funds as long as blessings of supporters exist; peace-lover individuals and even from overseas have join and ready to lend their hands in this project.

KO: About the rumour- MJN is a joint project with some foreign Embassies, how far it’s true?

Mohen: No, it’s not. But we met Japanese Embassy in New Delhi and they also welcomed such an effort to promote international peace, love and solidarity. They are actually looking forward about MJN and even hope to make use of the films to promote their diplomatic relation with Korea and China.

Apart from it they were so anxious and at the same time serious about MJN, that if it turn out to be another blow to the history of Japanese. So they even asked me to make some good side of them. When, some Japanese political affair officers came to Manipur they literary went on asking about this movie to some high level officials including our Chief Secretary and officials of state Tourism department, “One such movie is coming from your state, what would be the consequences of it?” I came to know about the gravity of their curiosity about MJN through Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Imphal. In fact is- they want to cross some political limits with MJN, where political affair does not succeed so far.

KO: Movie of such genre might require lots of research and field works?

Mohen: Yes! Work started since 2011 and now research and field study is almost at the stage of culmination. Feeling really happy………. As per scheduled we have started mock shooting.
KO: Mock shooting, is it so necessary?

Mohen: We believe on perfection, though the film is from Manipur, audience around the globe is waiting to witness it.

KO: Where will the film be shot….?

Mohen: The film will be shot at Manipur, Bangkok and Japan. The war scenes will be shot at Bangkok. Initially it would be shooting in Japan and some part of Indo-Myanmar border.

KO: MJN a brainchild of whom?

Mohen: It’s team effort. See, not only acting in the film, Junichi is helping me as production manager, making the cost effective so that it can be have a good move in a low budget as well as selection of location, drafting of script etc…throughout each and every development of the film. But the main location is- Manipur. The Manipur scenes will be shot at Kamray Ching, and Mongjam.

KO: Lastly, any other Manipuris in the film?

Mohen: There are some, apart from well-know faces like Bala and Abenao, we are in search of new talents. Abenao would be seen in a challenging role.

KO: Tentative date of release?

Mohen: On the 70th anniversary of the battle of Imphal in the year 2014, its gonna be a big incident.

The names of 82 journalists who died covering the news in 2012, and 6 additional journalists who died in previous years were added to the Newseum’s Journalists Memorial in the solemn ceremony.

Dwijamani’s name appears in two places in the Journalists Memorial – one etched in glass on the actual memorial and the other as a color photo on an adjacent wall. This is a permanent exhibit and visitors to the Newseum in Washington DC will be able to view Dwijamani’s name. KanglaOnline attended the ceremony and took photos of the event. A laminated collage of selected photos was presented to Dwijamani’s family by KanglaOnline on Tuesday, May 15 as a memento of the event.

It may be noted that John Powell, Exhibits Writer at the Newseum, journalists from the Imphal Free Press, and members of the KanglaOnline team were instrumental in communications between the Newseum and Dwijamani’s family.

Keynote speaker Richard Engel fondly remembered colleagues Marie Colvin and Anthony Shadid, who both died covering the conflict in Syria. In December 2012, Engel, chief foreign correspondent for NBC News, was kidnapped and held captive for five days in Syria, along with several members of his production crew.

With this year’s addition of 88 names from 2012 and previous years, the memorial will honor a total of 2,244 reporters, photographers, broadcasters and news executives from around the world, dating back to 1837.

3 & 4 May 2013, New Delhi

8 May 2013: For more than 63 years in the history of the independent Republic of India, the history/histories of 45 million of its citizens living in 8 states of the Northeast region of the country have been absent from our school, college and university text books. Northeast India is home to over 272 ethnic groups and communities. However, there is no collective writing, publication or inclusion of its varied histories in the syllabus or the text books of the country’s schools and universities. This ignorance or lack of awareness is one of the major causes of the wrong perception about people from the region. This is one of the main reasons that people of the northeast region are discriminated against when they travel for study and work to different parts of India.

Understanding and noticing these major lacunae, a team led by Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, Control Arms Foundation of India and Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace started work in September 2012 wherein they met with Chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). Later, a meeting was convened in Manipur on 13 October 2012 and New Delhi on 21 November 2013 regarding the issue.

Shri BG Verghese, Mrs Priyam Goswami, Ms Binalakshmi Nepram (l-r)

Shri BG Verghese, Mrs Priyam Goswami, Ms Binalakshmi Nepram (l-r)

On 3 and 4 May 2013 Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, Control Arms Foundation of India, Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace in collaboration with India International Centre (IIC) with support from Heinrich Böll Stiftung, New Delhi successfully hosted a conference on the theme “Weaving History of Northeast India Conclave Series-3: Including Histories of Northeast India in National Curriculum” at India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi.

The session commenced with an introductory speech by Ms. Binalakshmi Nepram, Founder of Manipur Women Gun Survivor Network and Secretary General of Control Arms Foundation. Her speech stressed on the fact that the history or histories of Northeast India that constitutes 45 million people had been neglected for many years. She said that with the help of that conclave, and the two others which were organized in 2012, strategies needed to be evolved through deliberation with eminent scholars, education institutions and members of the government.

Shri B.G. Verghese, Renowned Writer, Magsaysay Awardee & Visiting Professor, Centre for Policy Research spoke about the details of the important histories of the North East India and suggested to build a “grand narrative” for the region as a whole. He too shared the view of the extraordinary ignorance of the region, but said that Indians did had a tendency of forgetting their pasts and further said that it was not only the Northeast India they were ignorant of, but North India was ignorant of South India and vice- versa. He stressed on the fact that Northeast India had been surrounded by unfriendly neighbours, it had been subjected to violence and neglect. He went on to question the geographical aspects of the Northeast India and said that it just did not compose of the seven sisters but also Sikkim and northern part of West Bengal. He laid emphasis on the used of geography with history and cartography and that those were essential for building reliable narratives. He also introduced two works he was impressed with, first a book by Kunal Verma titled “Northeast Trilogy’” and the Shri S.P Shukla Commission Report titled “Transforming: The Northeast” stating that according to the report,”The ICSSR and ICHR should support, undertake, expedite or strengthen research into and the writing of Northeast history texts for different levels of learning and scholarship.”

Shri Vineet Joshi, Chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) spoke on behalf CBSE and gave a practical approach to the discussion. He started with clarifying what CBSE actually did saying that it dealt with the evaluation of the students. He explained that the local environment influences the children’s education and that environment changes from region to region and also the learning experience was influenced by how much the teacher and curriculum were able to connect with the local community. And stated that, for that and through CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation), CBSE was trying to give as much flexibility to the local schools to use local means to teach a basic foundation of education. He urged that State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) of each Northeast India states and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to include more contents on Northeast India Region. For why the question papers set for evaluation were the same, he explained that it was to set a common benchmark for the nation.

Shri Sanjoy Hazarika, Saifuddin Kitchelew Chair and Professor Centre for North East Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia spoke about the important looming questions of what was the history that they seek to weave or formalise and who would narrated that. He explained that there were many people who could told the history like the Royal chronicles but those could not be understood as the history of the people. He further said that if the change in curriculum had to be sustainable, there needed to be proper collaboration and documentation. He was resistant to the idea of Northeast becoming a part of India but wanted India to be a part of the Northeast.

Shri M.A. Sikandar, Director of National Book Trust (NBT) spoke about the initiatives taken by the National Book Trust regarding the issue. He announced that the National Book Trust would be opening two of its centers in the Northeast India, one at Tripura and one at Guwahati in order to give more focus on the Northeast. He acknowledged the fact that there were not many books on the Northeast India and hence he called for authors to write stories and books on the Northeast so that they could published.

Mrs Priyam Goswami, an eminent historian from Guwahati University spoke in detail about Assam’s history and its representation and lack of it in national curriculum. She narrated Assam’s history starting from 4th century to the contemporary times. She explained that once the students start to read the history, they would realize that it was not isolated and that it was an important part of the nation. She stated that the Northeast was home to more than 200 communities and that it was a pity that they were almost invisible even though there had been great efforts by every kind of media, there was a sense of alienation which was a great injustice.

Dr Sukhendu Debbarma, Associate Professor, History Department, Tripura University spoke about the social-economic history of Tripura focusing on the indigenous people. He said that the indigenous people were the minority of the land and being the minority the decisions of the land could not be able to made by them. He gave the example of the legislative assembly where only little seats were reserved for the indigenous people.

Dr Thounaojam Chanu Ibemhal, Poetess and scholar of Manipur Literature and Mythology spoke about the documentation of the history of Manipur and its inclusion in the national curriculum. She informed about the ignorance of many historians of few of the important civilization that settled in Manipur. She went on to talk about the uniqueness of Manipur’s political history and said that it is important that the people of Manipur wrote their own history in an indigenous way.

Mr Jarpun Gamlin, founder of Sentinel spoke in detail about Arunachal Pradesh. He revealed that Arunachal Pradesh did not have much documentation of history, they mostly had oral history hidden in the form of traditions, stories and lullabies. He reasoned that many of the local languages of Arunachal Pradesh did not had a script and so documentation was difficult. He argued that it was actually not the fault of CBSE or any other such institutions, but the people of Arunachal Pradesh who had failed to depict their importance.

Mr Peter Lauenstein Denjonpa who is the Principal of Taktse International School, Sikkim gave the perspective of a school in the discussion. He started by questioning why history would be important in a place where everyone wanted to become scientists and lawyers. He brought out its importance by explaining that history brings out practices and values embedded in the culture that would gave an edge to the students.

Dr David R Siemlieh advocated for the inclusion of Northeastern history not only in school but in college and university curriculum. He said that it was the moral responsibility of those organisations which conduct examinations, to get that incorporated and within a few years made amendments to the neglect done.

Dr Noopur Singh a representative of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) made a statement on behalf ICHR Chairman Prof Basudev Chatterji stating that there was a need to collect documentary and oral history materials for the region. She also announced the launch of an ambitious project of surveying and assessing archives all over India. She gave details of the project pertaining to the northeastern states of India. She also stated the earlier meetings and discussions with Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network regarding collection of varied Northeast history and proper documentation. She further told about the collaboration between the Center of Northeastern Studies (Jamia Milia Islamia) and ICHR that had bring out some new publications. She stated, “ICHR is ready to give full support on all matters concerning the Northeast region.”

Professor P. Sinclair, Director, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) spoke about the need for the rectification of the flack going around about Northeast not being included in the curriculum. She disclosed the attempts being made to project every state of India in the national curriculum and said that the national curriculum was just an advisory curriculum, textbooks were a resource and that the teacher was the agent for each learner. She impressed on a dream that the teacher be given so much confidence that they were able to make their own resources.

Shri Nepram Bihari, author of Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronical of Manipur spoke of the difficulties he faced while documenting and translating “Cheitharol Kumbaba, the Royal Chronicle of Manipur” into English, an effort that took 17 years. He explained that documentation could not be understood unless the local language was well understood. He said that “Cheitharol Kumbaba” chronicled each and everything that involved the kings of Manipur from 33 A.D. till its last king Maharaja Bodhchandra’s rule that ended in 1955. He said that the book was studded with information on how the royal game of polo had its birth in the State; that the art of making Chinese silk and bricks were commonly practiced in earlier times of Manipur.

Ms Atiya Zaidi, Publisher, Ratna Sagar Pvt. Ltd. showed with examples how in various ways the Northeast India could be incorporated in the curriculum. She explained that not only the history was important but other aspects were important too. She stressed on the fact the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) should gave them the freedom to create their own textbooks, taking into consideration the curriculum, and that their textbooks could include activities, lessons and stories involving the Northeast India.

Shri Pratyush Kumar Mandal and Shri M.V.S.V. Prasad, representatives of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) gave the perspective of NCERT and gave details of how the NCERT has designed the curriculum and syllabus that has sufficiently included Northeast India in it not as history but in other forms. They explained that curriculum development was a work in progress and stating that there was always a scope for change and development. They stated that one of the factors they could focus on for the curriculum development was connecting life outside the school with the syllabus to develop a critical understanding of society and minimizing load of information to promote debate and discussion. They denied the fact that inclusion of Northeast was tokenistic but it could be called insufficient. A letter from Cathy Trost, Vice President, Exhibits and Programs of the Newseum inviting Thangjam Babu Singh (father of Dwijamani) and his family to the ceremony at Washington DC, was handed over to Thangjam Tulchand Singh (elder brother) on April 18, 2013. John Powell, Exhibits Writer at the Newseum, journalists from the Imphal Free Press, and members of the KanglaOnline team have been instrumental in communications between the Newseum and Dwijamani’s family.

Dwijamani (32), a resident of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai was killed in the line of duty on December 23, 2012 near the foothills of Cheiraoching hill, Imphal, Manipur, India; while covering an arson incident which erupted as a fall out of the Livingstone / Momoko (actress) molestation incident. The names of 84 journalists who died covering the news in 2012 will be added to the memorial, along with six journalists killed in previous years who were recently brought to the Newseum’s attention. The 2012 death toll of 84 is the fourth highest number of journalists killed in a single year.

Spring

A poem by Bijayata  Akham

They say,
Once the gale blew ,
The fragrance of the flowers
Pervading ,
When the king arrived .

Blandly He was
visiting homes and hovels
to give new hopes
to the young and hoary old .

Today, the weather is hot
The wind doesn’t blow
When He comes
That   I  don’t  feel  His  coming .

And  sometimes at  sunset
I  seeing  the rows
of  herons  flying
From the Nongmaijing hill
Towards the western horizon
Pondered , how long
They will continue coming  there .

Remembering Wangkhei Meiraba: A Forgotten Hero
Vikram Nongmaithem

Unlike the much celebrated and much remembered Forgotten Army of William Slim of the World War II, most Manipuris seem to forget to remember and celebrate the heroic deeds and acts of Poila Wangkhei Meiraba and his band of nineteen other brave soldiers who gave their lives on 23rd April, 1891 at Manao Ching of Kakching during the course of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. Here is a brief and cursory history of this man and his band of warriors.

Wangkheimayum Meiraba was the grandson of Wangkheimayum Amu Singh, Ahallup Lakpa. His son Kshetri (Poila) married a lady of Thingbaijam and two sons were born. Meiraba was the elder one and his younger brother was named Jagat Singh. Meiraba (Poila) lived at Pishum Thong, Oinam Leikai on the bank of the Nambul River, Imphal.

Remembering Wangkhei Meiraba: A Forgotten Hero

An elderly paying homage to the departed souls
Wangkhei Meiraba was the Poila ( a military rank next to Major and above Subedar) in the Manipur army when Maharaja Kulachandra became the king of Manipur. After the Palace revolt and consequent developments which led to the execution of the five British officers including Mr. J.W. Quinton, the Chief Commissioner of Assam on the night of 24th March, 1891, the then British Government of India sent three columns namely the Kohima Column, the Silchar Column and the Tamu Column to invade Manipur which then was still a sovereign state even though much of India had then been under the British. The headquarters of the advance party of the Tamu column was at Palel, 29 miles south of Imphal, the capital of Manipur. Wangkheirakpaand Yenkhoiba Major along with their troops were sent to face the invading party and they encamped at Thoubal. After a few days Major Paona Brajadashee and Major Chongtha Miya with 400 sepoys re-inforced to assist Wangkheirakpa and Yengkhoiba Major. On the midnight of 20th April 1891 two parties, one under Paona Brajabashee and Chongtha Miya Major were sent via Khongjom to attack the British column at Palel and another party under Wangkhei Meiraba Poila were sent via Kakching to attack the British column stationed at Palel in a sort of pincer movement attack. But on the fateful night of 23rd April 1891 some British army under Major Leslie and his troops were holding a durbar discussing war strategy using a petromax at the Wairi side of Kakching were ambushed by Wangkhei Poila’s party .

The Memorial Tombstone (the white stone in front is the exact stone on which Wangkhei Meiraba fell when hit with bullets)
According to the late Pandit Achouba, in retaliation of the ambush a large contingent of British troops stationed at Palel marched towards the Chumnang side of Kakching and a fierce fighting took place between the well-armed and numerous troops against the Manipuri guerrilla army. Meiraba at this stage asked his outnumbered troops to retreat to the hillside while he himself hiding behind a big tree in a small ravine waited for his chance to shoot and kill as many British officers and their sepoys he could. Due to the superiority of the arms of the greatest empire, the guerrilla army of the Manipuris after the advice of Meiraba himself dispersed in different directions. Even after knowing that he and some of his troops have been surrounded by the British troops they fought to the end of their lives in the true Manipuri spirit where surrender is out of the question. A severe fighting took place at Manao Ching (Hill) of Kakching. It was here that Wangkhei Meiraba (Poila) and nineteen of his band of brave warriors gave their lives to defend their motherland. The exact spot where Meiraba fell had a big stone slab and it is on that exact spot that the memorial is built. In fact it won’t be wrong to say that the battle proved to be Manipur’s Battle of Plassey. Soon afterwards Maxwell blew up the Kangla Uttra which was then a symbol of the sovereignty of Manipur. Thus ended the two millennia old sovereignty of Manipur and it became the darkest chapter in the history of our beloved motherland.

For the last twenty-four years the People’s Museum under the stewardship of Mayanglambam Gourachandra along with the State Archaeology , Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur has been observing the death anniversary of these fallen heroes. But the sad thing is that the monument is not getting the attention it truly deserves. The Manipuri people ought not to forget those who gave their Todays for our Tommorows.

London, 20th April 2013: The two victories over the Japanese, which took place in Imphal and Kohima in the north east India over the same period in 1944, were voted the winner of a contest run by the National Army Museum to identify “Britain’s Greatest Battle”. Imphal-Kohima received almost half of all votes. It was far ahead of D-Day and Normandy, in 1944 which received 25% of the vote and came second.

At the event, each contender had their case made by a historian giving a 40 minute presentation. The audience, who had paid to attend the day, then voted in a secret ballot after all five presentations had been made.

An M3 Lee tank crosses a river north of Imphal to meet the Japanese advance(1)

The case for Imphal and Kohima was made by Dr Robert Lyman, an author and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
“I had thought that one of the bigger names like D-Day or Waterloo would win so I am delighted that Imphal-Kohima has won. You have got to judge the greatness of a battle by its political, cultural and social impact, as much as its military impact.

“Imphal and Kohima were really significant for a number of reasons, not least that they showed that the Japanese were not invincible and that that they could be beaten, and beaten well. The victories demonstrate this more than the US in the Pacific, where they were taking them on garrison by garrison.”

The contest aimed to gauge the battles in terms of their historical impact and the tactics employed.
The battles of Imphal and Kohima saw the British and Indian forces, under the overall command of Lieutenant-General William Slim, repel the Japanese invasion of India and helped turned the tide of the war in the Far East.

Some veterans of the battles and historians have felt the victories have since been overlooked, partly because the invasion of Europe, starting with D-Day, took place while they were still being fought.

The fight for Imphal went on longer than that for Kohima, lasting from March until July.
Kohima was smaller in scale, and shorter, from April to June – but the fighting was so intense it has been described as the Stalingrad of the East.
In one sector, only the width of the town’s tennis court separated the two sides. When on 18 April the relief forces of the British 2nd Division arrived, the defensive perimeter was reduced to a shell-shattered area only 350 meters square.

The Japanese, who fought alongside some Indian nationalists, eventually lost 53,000 dead and missing in the battles. The British forces sustained 12,500 casualties at Imphal while the fighting at Kohima cost them another 4,000 casualties.

There are several memorials to the British and Indian troops who fought in the area, including one with an inscription that has become famous as the ‘Kohima Epitaph’. It reads: “When You Go Home, Tell Them of Us and Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today’
After their defensive victory, the British went on to clear the Japanese from Burma.
