Governor and Chief Minister heap praises on State sportspersons

IMPHAL, October 11: `We should have more openness and bring in the best governance model so that our sports persons feel that they have our unstinted support,` said State Governor Dr DK Paul.

The Governor and the State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today attended a felicitation ceremony of the XVII Asian Games, 2014 participants and medalists today at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak.

`The recent initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for a sports code is an effort in the right direction and I feel that all will adopt it in the spirit it was framed,` the Governor said.

He also appreciated the various State-level sports associations, State government and the Manipur Olympic Association for their efforts in producing sports persons of high calibers and said `I feel that Manipur has adopted the correct strategy in sports whereby thrust is given to the disciplines where Manipuris have a natural talent.`

Manipur has come to be known as the powerhouse of sports and the club culture which of the State like in other sports developed countries has helped the growth of sports in the State, he observed.

He further expressed that there is still need to support the State-level and district level sports associations which have been playing a vital role in grooming the talented sportspersons at the grass-root level.

He also said that many States are coming out with cash awards for players of their own but it may not be fair to compare the awards among different States as some States do not give any cash awards and those which do may depend on their respective capacity.

While there is a bigger and tougher challenges ahead like the Rio Olympic and some of our players may get the opportunity to participate in the mega sporting event, he said.

State Chief Minister Okra Ibobi Singh also heaped praises on the players and their achievements.

He said `True to the name given to Manipur at the national level as `powerhouse of sports`™, players from Manipur are achieving laurels in Games and Sports at both the national and international levels by winning medals and doing the country proud.`

`We all understand that Manipur has carved a place in the world of sports because of the continued efforts and achievements of sports from the State. And in recognition of the efforts and contribution of our players, we are extending a little cash incentives.`

Expressing that the quantum of incentive is less that provided by other bigger and richer states, he expressed hope that the players understand the financial condition of the State exchequer and to accept the small incentive from the government.

He continued the exceptional improvement shown by the State players has been possible because of the support extended by players, coaches, local clubs, elders and the public.

Meanwhile, on the Laishram Sarita issue, the Chief Minister observed that the whole of Manipur came together and extended full support to her.

`I appreciate the maturity and sportsmanship shown by her on the issue,` he said before adding that the players are valuable jewels and the people will extend fullest support on all higher achievements in the days to come.

There were altogether 57 players from the State in the 516 players contingent of the country for the Incheon Asian Games alongwith five officials. Seven of the 57 brought home medals including two golds.

The Heroism of Tragic Characters

Sarita

By Pradip Phanjoubam

It has been a rather dismal performance by India overall in the ongoing 17th Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea. In the last two days India as expected picked up some more medals from the track and field events and secured for itself a place in the first 10, but this normally should not have been seen as good enough for a country which in terms of size is second only to China. It is also a country billed to be a future economic and military superpower, and this confidence should have been reflected on the sporting fields at the Asiad as well. But something is still very wrong, and much smaller countries are still far ahead of India in sports. It may be, as many observers have noted, India`™s most pampered sports, Cricket, is miniaturising all other sports in the national imagination, but even though this is a likely cause, it cannot be the only one. A glimpse of the other major reason may be what the unfortunate Laishram Sarita incident provided `“ a very corrupt and unconcerned sports administration.

For Manipur, it was a mixed bag of fortune and tragedy. While Mary Kom brought cause for celebration and jubilation, with a boxing gold, her companion L. Sarita, came into the news prominently for another reason. Indications are, what may be Sarita`™s personal misfortune could well turn out to be the wake call for Indian sports authorities to shake up and revitalise its oppressive sports administration. Whatever the case may be, all are justified in taking pride in what both the boxers brought home. One earned glory for all, the other provided what may in the end turn out to be a life saving alert for Indian sports as a whole.

There is little left to be said of Mary Kom, except that we wish her good form till the Rio Olympics so that she can end her brilliant career with a golden icing from there. On the other hand, there is uncertainty now on the boxing career of L Sarita. If the AIBA, International Boxing Association, does go ahead and suspend or ban Sarita, her Incheon Asiad could be her last appearance on the competitive arena, national as well as international. We do hope this does not happen, and she too would be able to join Mary Kom in Rio in the gold hunt two years from now. Both boxers would be on the edge of their primes by the time and it is unlikely they would be able to keep form thereafter. It must also be noted here that women`™s boxing is also getting increasingly competitive, especially after three weight categories were admitted into the Olympics, and even within the country the two are not without stiff challengers from younger boxers.

The Sarita episode has all the elements of a grand Tragedy. By tragedy with a capital `T`™, I do not mean just a personal disaster, and instead allude to the term as in the literary genre by the name. I am wary of the term martyr, and believe nobody should be encouraged to be one. On a lighter note, in contemplating the idea, I cannot but help recall the words of Gen. George S. Patton, commander of the 7th United States Army during WWII, in chastising his soldiers ahead of a battle. He is said to have told them (perhaps apocryphal), `I don`™t want any of you dying for your motherland. I want the enemies to die for their motherland.` In two sentences, he succeeded in totally de-romanticising martyrdom.

It is strange but true, that Tragedy is not only remembered better but has a much more profound influence on life and philosophies of life than Comedies. Demonstrate this to yourself by trying to recall the heroes and heroines in Shakespearean great Tragedies and Comedies. On this, I am sure I will be able to generalise my own experience and say while Tragic heroes like Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, still ring fresh in the mind, and the lessons from them still etched indelibly on the pages of memory, I can only recall the thoroughly enjoyable Shakespearean Comedies but very few of the characters by names or their actual parts in the plays. `As You Like It`, `Much Ado About Nothing`, `Midsummer Night`™s Dream`, `Merchant of Venice`… well perhaps Shylock from `Merchant of Venice` have a very good recall value, perhaps as much as the great Tragic heroes. But then, although occurring in a Comedy, he was more of a Tragic character, `more wronged than he has wronged` as a critic put it. Even local myths and folklores roughly follow this same thumb rule: `Khamba and Thoibi`, `Sandrembi and Chaishra`… the list can go on.

Another great writer Leo Tolstoy encapsulates this thought in the famous opening lines of his great novel, considered as one of the immortals of literature, `Anna Karenina`. The novel begins with the memorable lines: `All happy families are alike. Each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,` and chronicles the life of a beautiful but unhappy woman. For that matter, John Milton`™s `Paradise Lost` tells of the same tale. Satan`™s discontent with God`™s `tyranny` is a subject which has excited far more intellectual discourse than the quiet obedience of the rest of the angelic hordes in Paradise. Satan`™s Tragedy (John Milton`™s Satan not the Biblical one) is his inability not to question authority and received knowledge.

Tragedy`™s attraction may have to do with the fact that it tells of the inherent fallibility of the human condition. The hubris, the harmatia, the indecisions, the weaknesses, the prides, the foibles… and the consequent mistakes and disasters they bring, are all in some way or the other, and in varying degrees, part of each of us, therefore the instant identification with the predicaments of the Tragic characters of the great literatures. The heroism involved in the individual`™s struggle against such overwhelming odds of life also earn these men and women through generations, universal awe. Would Hamlet have been the immortal he is, if he did not have his Tragic flaws which made him so indecisive? Doubtful indeed!

Perhaps this is also why Sarita`™s rather extreme protest against the impervious and rigid system that administers the boxing world internationally, and indeed sports as such, earned so much public sympathy everywhere. It has also arguably been a point most discussed of the entire games, and on the day of her refusal to wear the bronze medal, according to some reports, discussions on the event was trending at the No.1 slot on Tweeter. Athletes from other countries also extended their moral support to her, consoling her with the words that she lost only because she fought a Korean. Among these include the Korean boxer, Jina Park, who was controversially given the verdict against Sarita. The feeling that the results have been rigged systematically, it seems is widespread in these games.

However, in her moment of agonised rage against the rightful verdict she was denied, Sarita decided to throw all cautions into the air and protested publicly, putting to risk her brilliant career so far. From the wordings of the statements released by the AIBA, the governing body of boxing worldwide is unlikely to let her off without a penalty for her open defiance. We can only hope the association would be lenient, and if a suspension is placed on her, it would be a short one, so that her career does not end so abruptly and that she is able to vie for gold at the Rio Olympics.

There are many now who feel Sarita should not have protested in the manner she did, for there was nothing much she could have changed, and by doing so she could have only harmed herself. I tend to disagree with this. Injustice must be resisted, and merely a quiet withdrawal can never be enough. For in such a circumstance, the injustice would have persisted. It is very much like a lot of government servants who think they are absolved of the guilt and bane of corruption corroding our society today by simply saying they stay away from it. This passivity is cowardice in many ways and can never bring an end to this disease. A proactive stance, even if it means taking on the system and risk career progress and displeasure of colleagues, such as demonstrated by kind Sarita, is essential if ending corruption is the goal.

Indeed Sarita may end up punished harshly by the AIBA, but her sacrifice would have probably begun the cleansing process of international boxing administration. As of now, the judges are treated as infallible and above reproach. Perhaps, and hopefully, the revolution Sarita has launched would initiate a process by which erring judges can also be made accountable for their misjudgements or corruption as the case may be.

The only thing Sarita should not have done is dragging in her Korean opponent Jina Park into her fight against the system. It was not Park`™s fault at all. In fact she was magnanimous enough to tell the media she too was embarrassed at the verdict, and that she too felt Sarita was the real winner of the bout. It was therefore horrifying to see Sarita walk up to Park and drape her with the bronze medal she won. This was unfair, and in bad taste. But then, at that moment, in the blindness of her emotional outburst, Sarita probably felt Park was party to the suspected larger match fixing seemingly at play to favour the hosts South Korea in this round of Asian Games.

Tragic characters however are admired for the combine of courage and flaws in their characters. Sarita fits that bill. If she had tamely accepted the verdict without making public her disagreement with the injustice of it, perhaps she would have saved putting her future boxing career at risk. Another boxer from Manipur, Laishram Debendro did just this. He too was put at the losing end by a controversial verdict in a bout against another South Korean, which as in the case of Sarita, was seen by everybody else other than the judges, should have gone in his favour. But he decided to stir out of controversy or the imminent trouble which would come from confronting the boxing authorities. For the record, even a Mongolian boxer was given a similar treatment in a bout against a South Korean, and they too protested openly, but did not go as far as the gritty Sarita did.

In the entire episode, the people who cut the most pathetic figure were the Indian Olympics Association, IOA, officials who accompanied the Indian athletes to the Incheon Asian Games. The very reason for their presence there, all on taxpayers`™ money, was to look after the athletes and give them the moral support they need so much during the competitions. Had they not stayed aloof even as Sarita got embroiled in the fight against the perceived injustice meted out by the judges, perhaps things would not have descended to such a pass, and Sarita would have been spared being left alone to fend for herself, thereby putting her career at risk.

This is where immediate action is called for. Everybody knows these sports administration bodies, both at the national level as well as, for that matter, the Manipur state level, are corruption ridden, and their officials have little interest or commitment to sports or sportspersons. All they want are the benefits of office, among them paid trips abroad to international sporting event venues. No wonder then India`™s overall performance in the 17th Asian Games at Incheon, was so dismal, barely managing a place in the first 10 spots in the medal winners hierarchy. We hope the Union Sports ministry intervenes and begins the Herculean task of cleaning the Aegean Stable of Indian sports administration. Should this happen, even if she did not manage to bring home a gold medal, Sarita`™s courageous defiant stance against injustice would have not been in vain. The protest may even find a place in the history of national and international sports movements which even gold medals could not have won in the ultimate analysis.

IMPHAL, October 2: The United Revolutionary Front, URF said the outfit is left with no other option other than quit the Memorandum of Understanding signed with both the State and Central governments and picked up arms once again.

A press statement signed by the outfit`™s chairman Lanheiba Meitei said that its cadres have been instructed to keep vigilant against any instigation.

The statement from the outfit`™s chairman Lanheiba Meitei said picking up arms once again has been necessitated in order to defend one`™s own rights and this has today become the only means to defend one`™s own identity.

The outfit had signed the Memorandum of Understanding with both the State and Centre on February 13, 2013.

The statement continued that since its formation, the outfit has been trying to unite the small revolutionary groups of Manipur and form a unified force.

It said the outfit was formed by seven smaller outfits on a common platform and has its own set rules and regulations.

It said on February 13, 2013 the outfit signed for peace-talks with both the State and Central governments.

Before the signing of the peace deal, the outfit had made several appeals for the welfare of the people to the representatives of both the State and the Centre, it said.

However, after the talk, both the governments seem to have forgotten their assurances, it said before asking how long a peace deal where the signatories are trying to pick faults with one another can last.

The Centre may not know, but the State government considers the signing of the MoU as a mass surrender, it said.

It continued that before the signing of the MoU, drafts were exchanged three times following which the MoU was signed at the Banquet hall of the 1st MR on February 13, 2013.

It said 90 cadres along with 50 weapons had arrived along with their leaders for the signing of the MoU.

However, the scene at the banquet hall was totally different from what the URF had reckoned, it said.

With much cajoling, the outfit managed to make the government take down the `Home coming ceremony` banner from the venue.

Further charging that the outfit was cajoled into signing the agreement, it said when the agreement was about to be signed, the outfit had checked on the agreement but found it to be different from the agreements reached beforehand.

But after much cajoling from the side of the government, the URF leaders were made to signed the agreement, it further said.

Now, whenever any complaint is made, it is denied stating that it is not in the agreement.

It further claimed that a person who had signed the peace treaty has not been even pardoned of previous cases and made to appear twice every month before the NIA Guwahati court.

The statement further said that it condemns and disapproves the government`™s act to completely crush an outfit and further demanded to immediately stop barricading police commandos at the Loitongkhunou camp of the URF.

Sharmila released, resumes hunger strike

IMPHAL, August 20: After having being detained in the judicial custody for over 13 years for allegedly attempting to commit suicide, Anti-Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) activist, Irom Chanu

IMPHAL, August 20: After having being detained in the judicial custody for over 13 years for allegedly attempting to commit suicide, Anti-Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) activist, Irom Chanu Sharmila on Wednesday was released from JN Hospital security ward, for the first time, free from any charges earlier lodged against her.

Sharmila was released around 6.14 pm. She was freed, following a judgement by the Session Court, which ruled that there was not enough evidences to prove that she was attempting to commit suicide and observed that Sharmila’s demand is a political demand through lawful means for repealing a valid Act.

Soon after stepping out from the security ward, Sharmila’s first word to the media was “I need mass support from my people”, her eyes swelling with tears, indicating she is not just about to give up her protest.

After the brief interaction with the media persons within the JNIMS campus she along with the trustees of the Just Peace Foundation and representatives of Sharmila Kanba Lup (SAKAL) headed straight for the SAKAL temporary camp near the JNIMS hospital and resumed with her protest.

“I feel very happy in winning this case as it proves that I am right, what I am doing is for the sake of justice. In return what I want from my people is mass support rather than songs singing my glory. That is what I need at the moment”, continued Sharmila.

Further responding to queries raised by media persons whether she ever expected to be set free, Sharmila said she loves freedom as much as others but what she desire was freedom with success.

When asked about her expectations from the present NDA Government and its leader Narendra Modi, Sharmila observed that India being a democratic country, the Government will concede to the demand of the people if a unified voice against AFSPA is raised adding that “Government is for the people, of the people, by the people”.

While hailing the Manipur Session Court judgement of cancelling her detention under section 309 alleging her of attempting to commit suicide, Human Rights Activist who is also a trustee of the Just Peace Foundation, Loitongbam Babloo said that since the judgement of the concerned court has validated Sharmila’s demand as political demand, the time has come to carefully and judicially consider Sharmila’s act, instead of criminalising it.

Further revealing that Sharmila has personally wrote to the Prime Minister of India and acknowledgement for the same has been received, Babloo divulged that the focus will now be shifted to the Centre.

Meanwhile, justifying on Government move of arresting Sharmila and subsequent detention under Judicial custody, deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam clarified that his Government has no personal enmity with Sharmila or her protest. However, he maintained that the Government was only concerned with Sharmila’s health.

Road_Aug

IMPHAL, August 17: Two brothers died at the spot while a son of the elder brother received serious head injuries when their vehicle collided with a passenger vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

The incident happened this morning around 6:30 along the Tiddim Road near the Oinam playground under Nambol Police.

The dead have been identified as Gurumayum Pritamkumar alias Kala, 45 and his younger brother Geet alias Guna, 32, both sons of Gurumayum Gunamani Sharma of Nongmeibung Seram Leirak.

The injured identified G Athouba Sharma, 13 son of deceased G Pritamkumar Sharma has been admitted at the Shija Hospital and Research Institute.

The three were going towards Bishnupur in a Tata Super-S bearing regd number MN 06 L 6524 which collided with a Canter bus bearing regd number MN 01 1569.

None of the passengers in the canter were injured during the mishap.

Meanwhile, the Nambol Police have registered a case in this connection and recovered both vehicles involved in the mishap.

The dead bodies have been handed over to family members after post mortem at the RIMS morgue.

Meanwhile, another head on collision between a Bolero jeep and a canter bus left nine persons injured two of them seriously this noon.

A Bolero jeep driven by a 21 year old with a 20 year old girl in the front passenger seat hit head on with a passenger canter bus along the Imphal-Moreh Highway near Wangjing Uningkhong injuring the two Bolero occupants seriously.

The canter bearing regd number MN 02 A 1991 was coming towards Imphal from Kakching while the Bolero bearing regd number MN 05 A 1620 was proceeding towards Kakching.

The two Bolero occupants identified as Takhellambam Chinglen, 21 son of (L) Kamdeva of Ngaisong Khullen, Bishnupur and Kharibam Anu Devi, 20 daughter of Nimaichand of Charangpat Maning Leikai, Thoubal are presently undergoing treatment at the Shija Hopsitals and Research Institute.

The impact of the collision was such that the whole front portion of the Bolero was crushed into its body and the two occupants remained trapped inside the vehicle.

Locals in the area responded quickly to the collision and tried to free the two trapped inside the tangled vehicle, but to no avail.

The accident also blocked vehicle movement along the busy highway creating a massive traffic jam.

Soon, Thoubal commando team 48 arrived at the scene and tried to rescue the two Bolero occupants. When all their attempts turned futile, they called a JCB from Wangjing and expanded the tangled part of the Bolero to pull out the two.

The commando team rushed them to Thoubal district hospital where they were given first aid and then referred to RIMS.

However, after their conditions deteriorated, they were taken to Shija Hospitals and Research Institute.

Meanwhile, the seven other injured passengers of the bus were taken to Public Hospital, Wangjing and Raj Medicity, North AOC and later discharged.

IMPHAL, August 13 : Frisking and checking by State security forces have increased ahead of 67th Independence Day celebrations.

Independence Day observation in Manipur has always been boycotted by various revolutionary groups of Manipur. Since the boycott, Independence Day celebrations have been minimal in the State.

Thought State security forces have beefed up security, a full-fledged celebration had never been possible since the imposition of the boycott.

India got its independence in 1947 while Manipur was merged into the Indian Union only in 1949. On the charge that Manipur was annexed into the Indian Union, the revolutionary parties of Manipur have been boycotting the Independence Day celebrations in Manipur.

On the other hand, Independence Day is celebrated each year amidst tight security within the short distance between Kangla Fort and First Manipur Rifles Ground.

Manipur Patriots’ Day falls on 13th August every year just two days ahead of the Independence Day. Both the days are celebrated with all the VVIPs of Manipur including the Governor, Chief Minister and Deputy CM of the State in attendance.

Prior to Independence Day, traffic regulations for passenger vehicles have been differently regularised creating chaotic situation in the traffic.

Patriots’ Day is observed in many parts of Manipur by various local clubs. Many of the clubs also organised cleanliness drives to commemorate Patriots’ Day.

Our Bishnupur Correspondent adds: A search operation in connection with the coming Independence Day celebration was conducted at Moirang Sribol Leikai, Bishnupur District today.

The operation was headed by dy SP (cdo) N John and OC Moirang PS S Surjaboro.

Seven non-locals, five bail-outs and three suspects who were without proper identifications were picked up during the search operation conducted from 4.30am to 6.15 am.

By: Khogen Khoibam

“It was like a hallucination all the way along the higher altitude but in the end I was on top of the world.”

IFP: You have been the talk of the nation. Tell me how did you make it to become the youngest Indian to scale Mount Everest?

Chingkheinganba: Actually, to stand on top of the Mount Everest has been an ultimate dream of my father, who is a founder member of Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) but he could not make it in his time due to lack of financial and technical support. Years later, he inspired me to do it and I made it to the top.

IFP: Would you share how did he inspire you as you are quite young for this expedition?

Chingkheinganba: To be true, I have never thought of myself to become a mountaineer but the inspiration was driven inside me spontaneously when I started my training in MMTA. After my first training programme, I came back home and recollected few old photos of my father. In the pictures I saw the real spirit of being a mountaineer and realised how hard my father had struggled to bring up mountaineering in Manipur. My father, Nameirakpam Tomba was one of the pioneer members of the mountaineering team from Manipur.

IFP: Do you really want this or this is because of your father’s background?

Chingkheinganba: I was quite a mischievous boy in my childhood and loved to do all kinds of adventurous activities though I was unable to discover myself those days. So many times my friends and I used to crash in the woods and bushes blindly and experienced many injuries too. Now I can figure out that it was in me from childhood and I am in a right position right now.

IFP: Share an experience about those days in the woods?

Chingkheinganba: Yeah…there had been a memorable day in my life when I was 13 years old, which even left a scar on the wrist of my left hand. By that time I have already gone through some training and the urge to climb hills and mountains was extremely intense that I was ready to face anything. So, two of my cousins and I went up a hillock and started cutting some woods but I ended up with a serious injury on my wrist. Being scared to let my parents know about it, we three went to RIMS directly and had a stitch by borrowing money from one of the friends. We had to walk 11 km to reach home but one of the cousins fainted suddenly and I had to carry him too all along the way.

IFP: So your stamina is quite interesting, how did you develop it?

Chingkheinganba: I started my first training session when I was 11 years old and I was extremely weak in the beginning. To be true, it is good to watch Superhero animation or cartoon on T.V. Somehow Superheroes inspire a lot to gain more energy (…laugh) and it actually happened to me. And moreover, when I saw one of my instructors climbing up the hill so easily, the desire to become strong grew more. After that, there was no looking back and I started to practice running every early morning at home. Gradually upgrading my running routine with push-ups and other exercises, my target was to run continuously 6 hours a day. I kept in my mind that only then I will be able to climb Mount Everest and eventually I built up enough stamina.

IFP: Tell us your experience so far in MMTA?

Chingkheinganba: MMTA is one of the best Associations and the training programmes here are immensely effective. It is not all about only mountaineering here, in fact the trainers do not simply train but they identify our specific areas in which we are to be trained. The adventurous sports are classified on Air, Water and Land, for example, Rafting, Sea Diving for Water, Trekking, Caving, Mountaineering for Land and Paragliding, Paramotor for Air, etc.

IFP: What about financial support?

Chingkheinganba: We always get financial support. Like for the Mount Everest Expedition, we were aided by the Northeast Council with Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

IFP: How many participants were there for the Expedition?

Chingkheinganba: A total of 16 participants, in which three of them were not mountaineers, a Medical Doctor, a Base Camp Manager and a Team Leader. They played much important roles in communication, management and medical aid, without which all the mountaineers would not be able to accomplish the main target to reach the peak.

IFP: Heard about someone got sick in the middle of the expedition?

Chingkheinganba: Yes, actually there were two members from Manipur who had medical issue and they could not carry on with the expedition.

IFP: It must have been quite a tough task to reach the peak, share us your experience?

Chingkheinganba: It was like a hallucination all the way along the higher altitude but in the end I was on top of the world. This was the first northeast expedition in the year 2013, which we started from Manipur on February 25 and came back home on June 5. Among the mountaineers, there were three girls from Arunachal, Meghalaya and Manipur, and rest were boys from Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Manipur. Each mountaineer was guided in every step by a Sherpa, a local Nepali who knows most of the nook and corners of the mountains. The task starts from Base Camp to Camp 1, followed by Camp 2, Camp 3 and Camp 4, which is also called the Death Zone and after Camp 4, the extreme hardship begins.

Well, there had been much hardship, like shortage of water and oxygen, going through the Death Zone where I saw many death bodies lying, the fatal glaciers and Jet stream that nearly carried away each one of us. On the mountains, everyone was concerned of their own lives and own survival, even the Sherpas, in some sort of times. While on the way, everyone lost contacts and I did what I was meant to do and kept on climbing, sometimes I slept while walking. Area by area I continued and suddenly I saw the peak and I cried seeing my destination in front of me, but it was not at all near too. After crossing all the remaining areas, finally I reached the peak and I did not believe that I was there. I prayed to God and cried in joy. And then, all I could feel was a feeling like heaven and the giant shadow of the Himalayas was covering everything when I looked down.

IFP: Sounds heavenly, so did you wish to stay there little longer?

Chingkheinganba: Of course! And I felt really sad thinking that I have to go down again.

IFP: Great! So what is next coming up after Mount Everest Expedition?

Chingkheinganba: Well, I have a project in my mind to form a cycling team and cycle all through the northeast India, to convey the message of peace and harmony among everyone and let all the people aware of the hardship we face when there is an economic blockade and other of issues of boundaries of land and politics.

IFP: Apart from adventure sports, what do you love to do?

Chingkheinganba: A good dose of music. Sometimes I play guitar and have a good time.

IFP: Does your mother support you like your father?

Chingkheinganba: My mother, N. Sabitri is also from sports background. She used to be an archer and a Gold Medalist in archery.

IFP: Does the world of adventure sports affect your normal life?

Chingkheinganba: Hard to say exactly, but yes it affects my academic career somehow and in times, pretty hard to balance but ultimately this is what I do and I live for it.

IFP: Finally, what is your opinion on the issue of intoxication in Manipur?

Chingkheinganba: Well, intoxication is one of the biggest issues in the State and most of the youngsters are drowning into it blindly. I think there is a strong need for awareness programmes to be conducted consistently, which should include importance of sports too. Sports world is very competitive and once a person is hooked by the sense of competition in sports, he or she will automatically become health conscious. For example, MMTA is playing a major role to divert the minds of many drug crazed youngsters.
