Bishnupur – In search of an old Mandir

(contd from previous issue)
I had imagined it to be a very vast complex in half ruins that give a special mystic touch of archaeological value to old monuments. But this was comparatively a small, neatly preserved structure; just a mandap without statues or artistic works, at least on the outer surface. I do not know if I had expected something magnificent like Angkor Wat in Cambodia (one of my dream destinations) or the Sun Temple of Konark (a favourite haunt while I was in Orissa, now Odisha).

Bishnupur – In search of an old Mandir

(contd from previous issue)
The mandaps are decorated with designed cloth festoons, unique to Manipur. Such festoons designed out of metal were found in the outer surface beautification of the temple of Lord Ibudhou Pakhangba within Kangla Fort complex. In the evening, as we visited Ima Market, we found many Ima tailors busy preparing such cloth festoon for the Yaoshang season.

Koro & Krishna – The young & old faces of Manipur

Koro, the Master Chef in the making –
‘Vanakkam, enna saapiduringa, Sir?’ When we heard these Tamil words while having food at our hotel in Imphal, the food stuck in our throat, because the person who talked in Tamil tongue was a Manipuri! It was like a bombshell exploding unexpectedly near us! After wishing us Vanakkam (Namaste) he enquired ‘enna saapiduringa’ (What will you have), Sir?’

Thank God, I don’t have daughters!

“Thank God! I don’t have daughters.” When I heard this exasperated, bitter expression from a mother, I was shaken to the core. More so because it came from an Ima (mother) from Manipur which State is known for women power.

Kakching : 2 disappointments = 1 surprise

That was an unlucky day for us in Manipur, it seemed so. Don’t know on whose face we three woke up that morning in the hotel. It was only the three of us who were staying in the same room; so we must have seen each other’s face that morning. Or, still worse, each one of us must have seen their own face first thing in the morning in the mirror. This seems to be quite logical.
