During the First World War in 1916, the British had demanded the government of India a supply of 50,000 volunteers to serve in France as Labour Corps. The Northeast region of British India also offered to raise five Labour Corps of two thousand men each. The Naga Hill corps, the Khasi Hill corps, the Lushai Hill corps and the Garo Hills corps had fulfilled the demand and went to France to help the Allied forces. But there was a crisis in areas governed by the Kukis. The Kuki chiefs refused to join the Labour Corps and instead fought the British.
