The minister and BRO

The new Cachar road or NH 37 has long been a sore thumb among the… more »

The new Cachar road or NH 37 has long been a sore thumb among the highways of Manipur and it was politically correct for Dr Khumujam Ratankumar Singh to visit this vital lifeline by road, after taking over as the Works Minister. His statement that he has come not to find faults but to help the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in speeding up the construction work on the highway speaks volumes of his firm attitude, quiet confidence and the importance that he places on the said highway. Yes, he had expressed displeasure at the way BRO is undertaking the construction work and the enormous time that the agency has taken on the highway. But you will not get the required results by shouting down the agencies implementing the construction work. The offer of help that the new Works minister has extended to the agency will go a long way in the implementation of the work. Also they need a pat on the back for some of the good works that they have done. NH 37 has assumed significance in recent times with frequent disruptions of traffic on the Imphal-Dimapur road due to series of bandhs and blockades of all hue. It has indeed become a political highway, where political assertions are frequently played out. In more recent times, the Dimapur highway had been blockaded a number of times. Whenever there is a blockade on the Dimapur highway, the unfinished Jiribam highway catches the attention of the government and the public as well. And the BRO will become the favourite kick bag of all civil society organizations and everybody. Ministers will visit the Jiribam highway at such times with engineers, officials and the media persons in tow. But, that was only for public consumption. As soon the situation in the Dimapur highway comes under control the Jiribam highway will vanish from the public radar. Yes, there are at least some organizations who continue to pursue the work progress of the highway. What is lacking on the part of the state is continued pressure. Although the Border Roads Organization is a central agency, it is for the state Works department to monitor the progress of the works undertaken by the agency. The works need constant monitoring from the maintenance of quality and work progress by the state engineers, as the minister found sub-standard quality work during his recent inspection tour. The state government should not even blink while monitoring the road construction on the NH 37 as monsoon is closing in fast. Once the monsoon sets in, road construction will stop and the unfinished stretches of the highway will further deteriorate. And the efforts of BRO will come to naught. Road construction works have to be finished and the bridges on the highway have to be strengthened to receive heavy traffic in case of any eventuality. One cannot take for guarantee that nothing will happen on the Dimapur highway as the months of June, July and August are very restive months in the political scenario of Manipur. But we are confident in the style of the new Works minister for deliverance of the goods. He is different from his predecessors in the Works department. He does not wear stetsons or dark Rayban glasses. He does not shout or get shouted. And we are sure, he will not go around like a Road Mohori to inspect road construction late at night and merrily drink on the roadside or gatecrash musical soirees and play the singer. We have seen enough antics in the SPF-II government, also led by Okram Ibobi Singh. And people are fed up of such antics. The time has come for the new ministers to pull up their socks and get down to real business for the sake of posterity.

Imphal, May 8 NNN: The cry demanding justice to Loitam Richard murder case gets louder every passing day in Manipur.
Cutting across community lines, agitation of different forms is climaxing.
On Tuesday, six students’ bodies including All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), DESAM, Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Manipuri Students Federation (MSF), SWAK and SUK have submitted a strong worded memorandum to Manipur home minister G Gaikhangam demanding deliverance of justice to the murder case of Loitam Richard. The memorandum also advocated for the case of O Laaba, who was found death in a mysterious condition in Tamil Nadu last year. The memorandum was submitted to the state home minister as the chief minister is away in New Delhi currently.
The six students’ bodies also demanded that the racial profiling of North East people in the mainland India be stopped immediately. The students’ bodies then said that chief minister O Ibobi Singh is least bothered about the Richard murder case saying that even today he could not tell the public whether the culprits involved in Richard’s murder case are still at large or their whereabouts.
Demanding justice for the killings of Richard Loitam and Okram Laaba, six students’ organizations of Manipur organized a mass rally in Imphal on Monday.
Earlier, the All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) had strongly condemned on the murder of Loitam Richard.
It can be noted that on Monday, thousands of students took part in the mass rally which was organized by six frontal students’ organizations of Manipur to protest the lack of appropriate response from the state government to book the culprits involved in the killings of the two students who were studying outside Manipur in the states of Karnataka and Haryana.
The rally was a part of the series of actions announced by the students’ organizations to protest the suspicious deaths of the two students. It was jointly organized by All Manipur Students’ Organization (AMSU), Manipur Students Federation (MSF), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA) and Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK).

New Delhi, May 9 (ANI): Addressing a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) on Wednesday, party president Sonia Gandhi called on leaders and activists to defend the UPA-II regime’s policies and be a disciplined team facilitating greater interaction between Centre and the states.
The meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of a standoff over the formation of National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC).
Warning that indiscipline cannot and would not be tolerated in the party, Gandhi said: “We must shed all manner of factional behaviour and fight as one disciplined team. That will be the single most important factor to decide whether we win or not.”
Gandhi said that the party must continue to give emphasis to inclusive growth, which remains its core goal. She cautioned that the party was under public scrutiny and must work hard in securing possible victories in the upcoming state assembly polls in Gujarat and Karnataka.
“People look to us— but we need to show them our commitment and our unity if we are to convert this sentiment into electoral victories,” Gandhi said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also present at Wednesday’s meeting.
Commenting on the elections results in the five states, including Uttar Pradesh, where the party could not perform as expected, Gandhi said: “While we can take satisfaction in the fact that we returned to power in Manipur for the third time and formed the government in Uttarakhand, the results in Punjab and Goa are very disappointing.”
She added: “In Uttar Pradesh, even though we did not perform as well as we had hoped to, we increased our vote share quite considerably and were seen as a serious player for the first time in 22 years. Of course there is much work to be done there as in other states.”
Wednesday’s CPP meeting comes a few days after a high-power committee of the party led Defence Minister A.K. Antony reviewed the party’s performance in the five states, and submitted its report to Gandhi.
She said with a series of state elections approaching in the coming months, the partymen “must draw upon lessons of the previous polls.”
Gandhi urged partymen to “expose the hollow claims of opposition-rule state governments”, adding that “mis-governance and corruption have been widespread in some of these states as revealed by CAG and Lokayukta reports”.
Gandhi said Congress units in opposition-ruled states should highlight the latter’s failures.
Gandhi said “Trust and cooperation must be the anchor Centre-state relations. I would like to reiterate here we are fully committed to strengthening federalism, which is a key tenet of our party’s and UPA’s agenda. What better evidence of this can there be than the unprecedented transfers of financial assistance from the Centre to the states these past eight years.”
She said that there are Centre-state issues of major national importance—such as fighting terrorism or dealing with left-wing extremism—where the “Centre cannot shirk its responsibility”.
Referring to the bills on food security and land acquisition, Gandhi said, “On our part, we must do all we can to ensure that the legislative process is not unduly delayed.”
While food security is the pet project of Sonia Gandhi led-National Advisory Council, Rahul Gandhi has been leading from the front for a new land bill.
“We are awaiting the standing committee reports on a number of important legislations including those on food security and land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation,” Gandhi said.

Study on North East India expose glaring knowledge gap – Northeast India Image Managers

By: Northeast India Image Managers (NEIim)

  • 87% working professionals can’t name all the states of North East India
  • 93% of the respondents wish to know more about NE India

In a first of its kind survey about the perception of North East India amongst the people in rest of the country conducted by the North East India Image Managers (NEIim), a voluntary group of communication professionals, it was found that as high as 52% of the respondents have a negative perception about this region of India. Their immediate recall of ‘North East India’ is that of “a region riddled with insurgency and most unsafe place in the country” or “most underdeveloped region with hardly any modern infrastructure and poor connectivity with the rest of the country” or “people with mongoloid features and weird food habit and an alien culture”.

Key Highlights

  • 52% respondents have a highly negative perception about North East India

  • 76% have no idea about any peace talks going on between govt. and any militant group of NE

  • 91% have no knowledge about Northeast Industrial Policy

  • 70% respondents won’t believe it if one states the fact that 3 of NE states have higher PCI than national average

  • 30% of professionals will never go and work in NE even if that best suits their career interest

  • 75% respondents don’t know that the current UPA govt. has ministers hailing from Northeast

  • 42.7% advocates changes in the educational curriculum to provide more information about NE

  • 56.3% wants government to run mass awareness drive nationwide to educate people on NE

Another shocking revelation of the study is that 87% of the respondents could not name all the states of North East India. As many as 76% of the respondents had no idea about any peace talks that may be going on between any insurgent groups of North East India and Union Government of India. The findings of the survey indicate that due to the negative imagery that people have about the region even if they are given the best of the job offer and it suits their career interests best 30% of them will never go and work in Northeast while 52% are not sure if it’s a good idea to go and work there. Even if 71% of the respondents agree that the place is full of natural beauty, as many as 30% of them may not go on a vacation to Northeast. “This testifies the fact that the picture has not really changed over the years. The stories of progress and peace from Northeast have not reached the people in the rest of the country yet.” said NEIIM.

While 70% of the respondents can’t believe the fact that three North East Indian states have per capita income more than India’s national per capita income, as high as 91% did not know anything about Central Government’s Northeast Industrial Policy which gives special incentives for investments made in the region. 75% of the respondents don’t know whether the current UPA government has any minister representing any constituency of North East India. 56% of the respondents don’t know that there is an IIT, are Central Universities and a IIM in Northeast. NEIIM said,This speaks about the failure of the governments – both at centre as well as in the states to actually create awareness in the country. There is definite need to create communication programmes which break the myths about the region create a positive mindset among common people.”

The study, interim findings of which were released by NEIiM today, goes on to probe as how such a hiatus of knowledge was created and how to bridge it, 56.3% respondents said that the government should run special awareness campaigns using various media tools at national level to educate people about North East India. A sizeable 42.7% also advocated for changes in the curriculum in schools and colleges so that the children may know more about north east India.

Releasing the interim findings of the survey, NEIiM said about the methodology of the survey, “We identified the target audience very selectively and we specifically targeted people who are from media, communication, advertising, public relations, human resources, finance and marketing and whose media consumption is considerably higher than any average person. We did an online survey using special online survey tools for most of our respondents and while for the rest traditional offline medium was used. In total, data from over 400 working professionals based in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and not hailing from Northeastern part of the country were captured during the course of the survey. These people work in the communication and service industry and keep a close tab on daily updates in the country. Now, post the results, we were astonished by the fact that if the majority of our respondents did not know about North East region of India, how any common can man of India would know about them.

When the study further probed as to why they failed to have much information on North East India, a startling 61% said that they do not see much of north east India on national media. The perceived notion that people from north east India don’t mingle with others stand challenged as 51.6% of the respondents said that they started knowing whatever little about the culture and people of north east from their interaction with colleagues or friends from North East India. Almost 61% also believed that North East India provides a good platform for multi national and national corporations to invest. A whopping 89.7 % confirmed that the Union government should give special attention to North East India than what is being given now.

What is heart warming and interesting is that 93% of the respondents expressed that their desire to know more about Northeast India. 56% of the respondents feel that Government should run special awareness campaigns using various media vehicles at national level to educate people about Northeast while 43% suggest that school/college curriculum should include more information pertaining to history, geography, culture and economy of Northeast India.

70% of the respondents can’t believe the fact that three North East Indian states have per capita income more than India’s national per capita income

The report throws up shocking revelations of lack of knowledge about a particular region and also a desire to learn and understand. The North East India Image Managers (NEIim) is working on the final draft of the report based on the findings which will also incorporate suggestions on facing the current situation which will be submitted to Ministry of Development of North Eastern region (DONER) as well as other important and concerned authorities for further action.

About NEIim:          Northeast India Image Managers (NEIim) (facebookgroup) is a group of PR/ Media / Brand Management/ Communications professionals hailing from Northeastern region of India and working in metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore etc. The group is aimed at discussing and finding out actionable issues pertaining to development and promotion of the image of Northeast India, which in the long run is expected to fill up the information and knowledge gap which has been existing leading to confusion about the people, society, economy and geography of Northeast amongst the rest of India.

Open letter to the Government of India on the issue of victing blaming in the cases of rape, by the society and particularly, by the police

By: Devika Mittal

With due respect, I am writing this letter as a citizen of a country whose tradition accords the highest honor to women but where she is blamed for cruelty meted out to her. Lately, there has been an increase in rape and molestation cases across Delhi and NCR. But what is more shocking is the attitude that the police have shown towards these cases and the rape victims.

Through this letter, I would like to draw your attention to the attitude that people and particularly, the police have towards rape victims.

*Instead of victimizing and dishonoring the accused, the police have been blaming the victims. Sting operations conducted by many news reporters have revealed the disgusting thinking of the policemen across Delhi and NCR. The policemen have blamed the victims of having a “loose character”. They try to prove that the girl was a sex worker. They say that the woman calls it rape when it’s a dispute over money or when she is forced.

*Another general tendency has been to prove that the girl knew the accused and the intercourse was on a consent basis. They also try to raise the age of the victim, in the case of a minor.

*In the Noida case of a teenage girl being raped in a moving car, the police had even revealed the identity of the victim, putting her future in danger.

*But the most shocking and disgusting attitude has been the remark on the clothes and “behavior” of the victim. The victims have been accused of “deserving” rape. The policemen argued that the victims should have “expected” rape when they wore “inappropriate” clothes or were out in night or went to pubs. The peak of this sickening attitude was reached with the 8 PM curfew for women imposed by Gurgaon police whereby women were asked not to go out after 8.

This attitude of the police is unacceptable and nauseating. The remark about the “inappropriate” behavior by the victim leading to rape is barbaric and illogical. It shows the mental level of policemen. They should be asked to do a compulsory study on rape cases and the psychology of rapists. Studies across the world have revealed the psychology of the rapists on how they select the rape victim. The rape victim is generally a weak-looking or less-confident female. The rapist is not interested in women who would fight back. They look for women who can be easily over-powered. A woman wearing “inappropriate” clothes is far from being the less-confident female. But a more important question is the definition for the “inappropriate” clothes. What is “inappropriate”/”indecent” and who defines it? Is jeans “indecent”? If it is, then what is saree? It is a fact that today saree is the most sensuous piece of clothing. Blaming jeans for rape is not only insensible but also reveals another dimension, which I will discuss in a while. Even if we accept for a moment that jeans and other “inappropriate” clothing leads to rape then are we arguing that women in kurta pyjama do not get raped? If this is the case then there should be no rape case in rural areas because women are “fully covered” there. Women in burqas do not get raped? Then there should be no rape cases in muslim-dominated areas. But this is not true. The policemen should see the statistics, use their brain and then conclude.

Another point is that even if women wear “inappropriate” clothes, is it license enough to be raped? Is this the reality of 21st century India? In the “modern” society, women do not even have the right to decide what they should wear. There is no connection between rape and clothes. The females in the jarawa community of Andaman and Nicobar islands have remained uncovered for centuries. Do rapes happen there? If they did then at some point of time, they would have started wearing clothes. But this hasn’t happened. It only shows that this link is a societal construct, in favor of men. It is just an excuse.

Regarding the point on the “inappropriate” behavior leading to rape. Women who go to pubs or drink should “expect” rape, according to policemen. What about men? What should they expect? Or is that ‘moral’ restrictions are only meant for women? What is the link between women drinking and rape? It is argued that women who drink or go to pubs are of “loose character”. What about men? What character do they have? What exactly is “loose character” and who defines it? If I am not wrong, some centuries back, woman going out to work was also not “proper” and meant that these women were of “loose character”.  It was assumed that if they went out, they interacted with men and this interaction may also be sexual in nature. It was basically a fear. A fear that women would do what men has been socially ascribed to do. This assumption has been fading away to some extent but “Loose character” pertaining to going to pubs or drinking is still there. And the same principle applies here. Women are trying to enter into the “man’s domain”. Liberal ideas, drinking, prostitution is a man’s domain. The fear is that of equality. Women are ceasing to be submissive and sub-ordinate to men. They are doing what men do, whether it is ‘morally’ right or wrong. And this is unacceptable to males. Hence, they come up with such notions of “inappropriate” behavior and clothing. So jeans which is a symbol of modernism and liberalism became a target.

Again, the question arises. If going to pubs and drinking means rape then what about the rapes in within the domestic sphere? How will the police explain them? What about rapes in rural areas? In rural areas, women definitely do not go to pubs or drink but they still get raped.

But even if the woman was raped when she was drunk, can rape be justified? She was cheated. So is cheating justified?

The Gurgaon police came up with the “8 PM” rule? Do women get raped only after 8 PM? if, for a fraction of a second, I accept this then I want to ask, If the police knows that rapists are out after 8, then why can’t they do anything? Instead of restricting women, they should ban men from going out after 8. What about women who have to be out for work? What about women in call centres? And how can they issue such a notice in a country which is run by some prominent female politicians? Does this also apply for them?

A general tendency is to prove that the victim knew the accused. What does the police want to prove by this? Even if women knew the accused, she was cheated and then over-powered by him. What was her fault in this? What is the police trying to say? Should a woman stop speaking to men? Because rapists can be anyone – her friend, boyfriend, neighbor, brother or even her father? In date rapes, why is the victim at fault? Is it a crime to have a boyfriend? The woman was clearly cheated by her boyfriend. Isint cheating a crime? She had trusted him. So is trust a crime?

What about minor girls getting raped? Recently, there was a case where a six month old was raped. What about old women? There was a case where a 70 year old woman was raped. So how do they “invite” rape?

There is no relationship between looks, clothing, behavior and rape. They are just excuses given by rapists and the police. Rape is seen as a shameful crime but the shame is reserved only for the victim. The women first get dishonoured by the rapist and then later, when she dares to report it, by the police, the media and the society.

What is her crime? Daring to go out? Daring to work? Daring to speak? Or daring to be born?

I Request you to kindly take appropriate action to curb this barbarism in 21st century modern India.  I suggest the following actions that should be taken:-

*There should be a mechanism to complain against such policemen. The rapist should be able to complain if she meets this sickening, male-chauvinist behavior by police. And speedy and effective action should be taken against them. The policemen should also be asked to educate themselves before speaking up. They should be asked to go through a compulsory course on rape studies and psychology of rapists. Strict action should be taken against policemen who come up with misogynist directions for women.

*A mandate should be issued to the media that the news reports should carry full identity details of the accused.

*National Commission of women(NCW) or any other organization should be asked to open a wing only for rape cases wherein they would monitor the entire process from filing the report in the police station, to getting the compensation. It is practical and the need of the time.

*The compensation should be increased to minimum 10 lakhs. This is in light of the destroyed future of the victim, thanks to the police harassment and social stigma.

Rape and eve-teasing cases can be reduced by changing the attitude of the people and the police. Most of the victims do not go to the police because of their insensitive and harassing attitude. If the police becomes serious, the rape victim would atleast not be ashamed, which she should anyway not be as it is not her fault that she got raped. If the police become serious, the rape cases would definitely reduce as instead of victim blaming, they would go after the accused. Giving excuses and directions to women is not only demeaning to women but also encouraging to rapists who can easily get away with the charge.

It is a sincere request to you to kindly work in this direction. It is unacceptable that the country which is run officially by women, with the president being a woman, treats women in such a horrendous and barbaric manner.

The Richard Loitam murder: Denying our inner bigot

Lakshmi Chaudhry May 8, 2012, Firstpost

Richard Loitam, a young architecture student, from manipur, was found dead in his hostel room on 18 April. The most contentious aspect of this murder – and its shoddy investigation – is this: Is Loitam’s death damning proof of racism or not? This in turn has led to a broader debate as to whether people from the North-east are, in fact, victims of racism.

Home Minister P Chidambaram dismissed the problem in Parliament as “subtle discrimination” experienced by a wide range of communities: “Some years ago, it was based on language. Sometimes it was based on regions. Every south Indian, who came to Delhi, was called a Madrasi. Things have changed.”

Two Deaths and a Lie

By Y. Jajo Two recent incidents, one within the state and the other outside the… more »

By Y. Jajo
Two recent incidents, one within the state and the other outside the state, have captivated the readers of the local dailies in Manipur, including myself.

  • The first is the rape and the brutal murder of Kumari Premila, a middle aged lady; and the second is the ‘mysterious’ death of Loitam Richard, a young student of architecture. The first incident occurred in a little known location somewhere in the remote corner of the state (Kakching, Manipur)
  • The second incident occurred in the technological capital city of the country – Bangalore.
Why is the inhumane, brutal and gruesome nature of her murder not advocated and given equal space like Loitam Richard’s?

Both are death and gone. May their souls rests in eternal peace.

What is interesting, and also of significance, to note is not the death per se of the two individuals mentioned above but the way the living respond to the deaths which reflect the deeply rooted structures of inequality in the society.

Shortly after the death of Loitam Richard, ‘Justice for Loitam Richard’.facebook.com, came into being.

The newspapers reported that 190,000 people registered immediately thereafter and the number was rising.

Candle lights vigils, sit-in protests, marches, condemnations etc. against the ‘mysterious’ death of Loitam Richard and for speedy delivery of justice were organized and continues to be organized across the country. Apparently, the nation in general, and the ‘northeasterners’ in particular, have suddenly woken up to brute injustice, or so it seems, through Loitam Richard’s ‘mysterious’ death.

Every day the front pages of all the leading local newspaper in Manipur carry big headlines and pictures of ‘Justice for Loitam Richard’. In it one see the faces of the young and the old, the foolish-looking and not-so-foolish looking, the enchanted and disenchanted, some seen herding them, all coming together demanding justice for Loitam Richard. Eulogy floods the limited editorial space of these dailies.

One of the intellectuals of the state wrote in a local daily:

‘He definitely must be a boy who had Manipur in his mind and heart so closely that even his death has played such a wonderful role to shake up the Indian psyche as never before’.

I have not had the opportunity to log in or browse the net for some time now. I am sure the traffic would be heavier there.

Forget dying, Loitam Richard would never have thought of becoming a martyr either as he is made out to be by the media. To conjecture and attribute so much after the person is no more reeks of something dubious; something more than just the ‘mysterious’ death. By the way, where is Kumari Premila all this while? Wasn’t her corpse charred beyond recognition – like an overdone barbecue – and head-less when it was found by the police?

Why is the inhumane, brutal and gruesome nature of her murder not advocated and given equal space like Loitam Richard’s?

If brutality or gruesome-ness is the yardstick for visibility, I guess Premila has an edge over Richard. But then, when this is not so, one is tempted to asked could it be the gender of the victim, the location of the death or is it a reflection of the wider socio-economic and cultural divide that marks the contemporary neo-liberal capitalist society largely driven by a patriarchal ideology – ‘Loitam’s Law’

(See Imphal Free Press, 6/5/2012, Editorial page, Manipur’s Time: Our Turn to Catch)?

That Loitam Richard died very young is sad. Moreover, the deliberate attempt to hush up the cause of the death by certain interested parties is condemnable. Justice must be delivered.  Yes, justice must be delivered to Loitam Richard not because of his gender, youth, or being a ‘northeasterner’; justice has to be given because injustice has been committed. A murder is murder. The on-going attempt by many individuals and groups to harp on the attention generated by the media over the death of Loitam Richard to the calculated silence on Kumari Premila’s murder or the gang-rape of Mrs. Janthailiu Kamei that happened in our own backyard by our own people is very disturbing? Isn’t it said that charity begins at home? Are we saying that justice must be equated to the capacity to generate a higher level of decibel? How is one death different from another death when death is the scale? The calculated silence and apathetic approach to the increasing crime against women in the state by the media and the concerned agencies of the state speaks volume about the cockeyed notion of justice permeating our society.

For instance, in the gang-rape of Mrs. Janthailiu Kamei, where the perpetrators of the crime includes members of the state machinery, the response of the media and the public is still less than venerable. Moreover, beneath the apparent coming together of some civil society based groups condemning the gang-rape and the call for awarding befitting punishment to the culprits, the divide based on elemental forces like gender, ethnicity and minority-majority seems to underline the fellowship. Interestingly, the way it is represented in the prints appears so shabby and incoherent that it generally escapes the eyes of the serious readers

(See Letter to the Editor, Hueiyen Lanpao, Dated 7/5/2012

“ On Gang rape of Jangthailu and brutal killing of Premila). Silly writing mistakes, avoidable errors, unconnected sentences etc. all go into giving an impression that either the campaigners are not as smart or the media just don’t care. Therefore, the public need not bother.

With due reverence to the departed souls and condolences to the bereaved families, I would like to strongly contend here that what is being played out in the media today is disturbing for the reason that inequality in the society is being perpetuated in the ways we respond to the issues happening around us.

Issues like ‘us’ versus ‘them’, men versus women, the ‘haves’ versus the ‘have-nots’ etc. continually gets reflected in our responses as we fail to note the embedded-ness of the existing inequalities and the hegemony of the state and the media dictated means of responses.

it is time the media savvy-based- canvassing steps aside for a more justifiable channel and forms of protest for ensuring justice for all transcending the gender, regional and economic divide

One needs to be conscious of the means and ways of responding to the issues confronting us ensuring that our responses do not perpetuate the ills that plagued our society. One need to remember that media and the urge to be in the limelight has become strange bed-fellows in this time and age.

I guess it is time the media savvy-based- canvassing steps aside for a more justifiable channel and forms of protest for ensuring justice for all transcending the gender, regional and economic divide. The media needs to represent issues in a more democratic manner and shed its penchant for selective amnesia.

so stand up 4 ur beliefs, don’t just Sit/
if you want it, raise your voice n say”I want justice”/

Verse 2: Shree Sen

Human, losing humanity
Got stuck in the idiotic word TV
Manobikota’ aaj boro song’in / Humanism is dying rotten alone
Look around/ deykho aaj sudhu hing’sa/ Look Around, all you can see is HATE
No one listens/ jibon aaj mith’thay/ No one listens, life is a living LIE
Khotobikhoto pran/ nai tar mul’lo?/ Life is mourning, doesn’t have a value!
Monushot’to nei’/ sob aaj mrito/ Humanity is over, it’s all dead now
Think about it, so many are dying/
Harassment, Racism, Physical Abuse and
Kayray nilo nis’paap pran, jibon dhong’so, / Taking away an innocent life
Kothin ek odh’dhai ai holo sotto? / Fact of life is nothing but stuggle
Nikris’to’tar udahoron, nai richard’o/ Example of brutality, we have lost Richard now
Wa hai’niag’I lait’ray thawa’I khubak’ta Haptuna chat’li ai
– I don’t have words to say, with soul in my
palms I walk (risking my life….)
Don’t have any words/ bak’kohin ami/ I’m left with no words
Bikhip’to kotha niya/ agiya choli/ I move ahead with heavy words.
Boli ai hobay sesh, punora’bri’t’ti’r/ Lets say, we are gonna stop this madness
Come out, lets stop it/ chai bichar noi fakhi!/ We want justice, won’t let it escape

Veerse 3: Zing

lets take a moment to recollect;
lets call our thoughts and redirect:
if you still have a brain, a lil intellect(left)
oh lord, will you ever
resurrect back???

since when did people die of cuts and bruises?
a broken helmet is the proof, murderers loose;
painting the image of a victim with “drug-abuse”;
(got me wondering if ) the media is clean or did they “drug” the “news”?
the government is deaf , the ministers are mute;
so they justify girls bein raped cuz some people think their “skirts” are “LOOSE”??
or is it bout the looks?
for that, im sorry brothers, we aint born to choose;
born light-skinned, chinky-eyed, therefore, abused??
“GUILTY” of being “DIFFERENT” and they (wanna) hang the ACCUSED.
its time we rise above “ASAINS”, “BLACKS” AND “JEWS”..
RICHARD, DANA, ANSH, WE ALL STAND FOR YOU……

meanings…:-

1. “since when did people die of cuts and bruises?”
*(they say richard died due to a minor accident that happened a couple of days before he died)

2. “broken helmet is the proof, murderers loose”
*(they found some scratches, dents on richard’s helmet and now that is “proof” that richard died in the accident)*

3.painting the image of a victim with “drug abuse”-
*(they say richard died due to drug abuse)*

4.” so they justify girls bein raped cuz some people think their “skirts” are “LOOSE”??”
*(they say girls wearing short dresses are inviting rape, sexual harassment intentionally.. they blame the victim, not the criminal..*)
