Mamata raises repoll issue; Congress, Left rule out possibility

Kolkata, May 12 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has hinted at the possibility of general parliamentary elections being held as early as 2013, and urged her party workers to be prepared for it. However later today party spokesman Derek tweeted that Mamata would like to see the UPS complete its term.
Asserting that she had information that general elections could be held within a year, Banerjee said that the masses have to be taken into confidence prior to the polls.
“We have to take the masses in confidence and also democratic system. Please do not underestimate the elections. I have information that there was meeting on holding the general elections early. A certain party has discussed this within itself. Though my information may not be positive, I have got this information,” said Banerjee.
“The meeting took place in New Delhi. I will not disclose who attended it and when. They said they could call for elections in 2013. I am saying this for only one reason, that is, we can face election any day now.
We have to be ready for the elections. I will not do anything due to which people misunderstand us,” she added. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Brinda Karat on Saturday said there is no question of a mid-term poll in the country, and termed it to be an internal matter of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the ruling Congress Party.
“From where does the question of mid-term polls arise. We read about it in the media. What Mamatiji will say when we have no idea about it? Its better you talk to her party workers (TMC party workers) or people from the Congress,” she said.
Expressing surprise over Banerjee’s ideas, Karat said: “I don’t know from where this particular thing came to Mamataji’s mind. And from whom did she receive this news, only Mamataji and the Congress can know about it. We don’t have any information about this. What Mamataji is saying her party workers will understand? There is no need for us to comment anything on it.”
Congress Party earlier today played down Banerjee’s claim, saying if the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief has told anything to her party workers then it is an internal party matter.
Dismissing the reports, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) 2 will complete its full term and the elections will be held in 2014 as scheduled.
“As far as the mid-term (polls) are concerned, UPA 2 would complete its tenure. The general election will be held in 2014 as scheduled. I can very specifically say that there is no question of mid-term elections taking place,” he said.
Banerjee, whose Trinamool Congress (TMC) is a key ally of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre has since the past few months kept the Centre on tenterhooks on various issues of national and regional concern, such as price rise and the proposal to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail.

Imphal. May 12 MNS NNN : Union Minister of State for Defense Pallam Raju inspected the progress of work on National Highway 37 along with the chief minister and home minister of Manipur, Okram Ibobi and Gaikhangam, today.
The union minister of state for defense reached Imphal today around 9 am and, accompanied by the chief minister and the home minister of Manipur, inspected the progress of work along the Imphal – Silchar road which is under the maintenance of the Border Road Organization (BRO).
Around 50 km of the highway from Imphal to Noney was done by road and then the union minister visited Tamenglong by a helicopter.
The comments of the visiting union minister of state could not be known as there was no chance of interacting with him by media persons. The union minister of state is reported to have left for Delhi around 4:30 pm after inspecting the progress of work along the National Highway 37.
It may be mentioned here that Pallam Raju visited Manipur earlier to inspect the progress of work along the National Highway 37 as there were discontent expressed by the state government as well as civil society organizations, but the inspection could not be carried by road due to inclement weather then.
It has been alleged by transporters unions plying their vehicles along this highway that the progress of work is very slow with inadequate number of labourers being employed by the BRO and that the work along this highway which has assumed the importance of being the lifeline of the state would not be complete before the rainy season starts.
The Manipur state public works department has also claimed that they can do the job of repairing and maintaining the National Highway 37 better and faster than the BRO.
Meanwhile PIB DW said MM Pallam Raju, Rajya Raksha Mantri concurrence was accorded by DGMO (MO4) to construct road by BRO from Longdipabram to Tamenglong. BRO has completed the survey and will be constructing the road shortly.
Raju was earlier scheduled to visit the village on 11 Apr 2012 but couldn’t take off due to bad weather conditions. RRM is desirous of traversing NH 53 by road to Tamenglong and back to understand the actual road conditions.
The minister undertook the visit with in special consideration for the village which has reached out to the Army for reconciliation. Several programmes have been launched to wean away the people from Militancy as a special initiative by the minister including a Bamboo Mission and Horticultural mission in Tamenglong for which he had written to Minister for Science and Tech and Agri Min. BRO was tasked by RRM to complete the road.

After two complete terms as Chief Minister there would be no excuse for inability to take up developmental works, Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh repeatedly said after he took oath as Chief Minister for the third consecutive term. The state goverment should not think big to solve the problems. Everything has to be done by methodically working out a solution conducive to the environment. Power is one problem. Three to four hours a day will push the state backward. Pre paid schemes are taken up now. It is a good step. People should pay for what has been given to them and the same rule applies to the government machineries as government offices do not regularly pay taxes. Small hydro projects will solve lots of problems. Solar power is becoming popular but it is beyond the reach of the common people. The state government should make solar projects reach the common people rather than giving the solar equipments to senior officials who can afford to buy it in the market. People will learn to be good citizens once things go on smoothly. Nothing is working well in the power department now under the direct control of the chief Minister. Transformers, electric wires, poles, meter all need to be replaced and it should not become a gold mine for contractors but a means to help the people. We should also take a cue from the project taken up at Sundervan area. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), in collaboration with the Centre for Appropriate Technology Incorporated (CAT) and Projects Australia is setting up a solar power station in the Rajat Jubilee village in Sunderban area of West Bengal.WWF official Anurag Danda, said that that they took up this task to address the power woes of the villagers.”Sustaining these power stations in the remote locations without grid connectivity is quite challenging. CAT, Projects Australia, and WWF India, collaborated and Project Australia tapped into the funds that were made available by the Australian government under the Asia Pacific Partnership for Clean Development Mechanism. It took us about 13 months to work out the details with the community,” he said. The power station is being managed by the villagers and is governed by a group of council members who take the decisions regarding its maintenance.Currently, there are a total of 57 consumers and solar energy is used to light up 10 streetlights and 3 community building, and everybody still gets 200 watts of power per minute. The batteries are kept in the power station and are recharged every evening on the payment of monthly rental of Rs.125.Danda added that the villagers were trained to operate the system.” Community members went through an energy education programme. They are able to calculate how much which equipment consumes and therefore they budgeted for a 24 hour period,” he said.
The villagers expressed happiness due to uninterrupted power supply.”Earlier, due to frequent power cuts, children were not able to study. However, now they are able to study late in the evening. Power generation has made people less dependent on kerosene , diesel and petrol which is good for the environment. Kerosene is not available in Manipur and many admit most of the state quota are taken away by various oil depots to be mixed up with petrol and diesel. The administration has yet to do something good worth admiration and applause. People will appreciate all good steps taken up by the government.
