Imphal, Itanagar, Aug 10 (MNS, ANI): Olympian Nganbam Sonia, weight lifter who represented India in Summer Olympic was greeted at Tulihal Airport today.
Members of Social Development orgn. Haoreibi Modern Star Club, Chandranadi drama assn, Youth sporting unit, Lamjing Meiraba assn and players of SAI escorted her to her native land at Haoreibi.
Expressing solidarity with boxing icon Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, who won the bronze medal in the London Olympics, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh for the Manipur boxer as a gesture of appreciation.
Tuki made the announcement in recognition of her winning the first Olympic medal for the Northeast region.
“I salute Kom and convey my congratulations on behalf of the whole Northeast. This clearly proves the visible and hidden sports talent of the region,” Tuki, an avid sportspersons and known footballer, said, adding the move would encourage Indians, particularly the sportspersons of the NE region, to work hard to win laurels for the nation.
Tuki also announced that any sportsperson from the state taking part in Olympics would be honoured with Rs 25 lakh and Rs 1 crore in case they win medals.
Five-time world champion Mary kom scripted history in London by reaching semi final and winning bronze for India in the Women’s Flyweight (51-kg) category.
RPF congratulated Mary Kom for winning bronze medal in London Olympics. It was a historic fight for Mary as she started from the scratch and she was able to put Manipur on world map of sports.It also congratulated Debendro, Bombayla, Sonia and Kothajit.
